  • Caring for Blue-Green Solutions (BGS) in Everyday Life: An Investigation of Recreational Use, Neighborhood Preferences and Willingness to Pay in Augustenborg, Malmö
  • 2023
  • In: Land. - : MDPI AG. - 2073-445X. ; 12:2
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this article, we explore the production of socio-cultural values around blue-green solutions (BGS) through the perspective of care. We explore how values and preferences are formed through the complexity of everyday life engagements in a BGS environment. The data come from a questionnaire answered by 328 households in the neighborhood of Augustenborg in Malmö, Sweden. The questionnaire collects detailed information about inhabitants’ possible recreational use (through Likert scale questions) and willingness to pay (WTP) (estimated through contingent valuation). The study evaluates if and how people care to use, care to live with, and care to pay for BGS. The result shows that people in Augustenborg relate in different and sometimes contradictory ways to BGS. A well-used BGS environment does not per se make the environment successful or result in people preferring a BGS environment in the future. Building awareness about BGS seems to increase the willingness to pay, whereas recreational use seems to decrease it. The study reveals a landscape of care that is constantly being formed and transformed. This suggests that both planning and research needs to focus more on the relation between BGS and social use over time.

  • Lunds kommuns klimatpolitiska råd: Rapport 2019
  • 2019
  • Reports (pop. science, debate, etc.)abstract

  • The concept of hyperenculturation : An example from a Swedish research school
  • 2020
  • In: Högre utbildning. - : Cappelen Damm AS - Cappelen Damm Akademisk. - 2000-7558. ; 10:2, s. 24-36
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to discuss how research schools with a structured programme and targeted profile may make it difficult for doctoral students to expand the academic role. Our paper is based on material collected in a questionnaire given to doctoral students enrolled at a Swedish research school in architecture. In this questionnaire we found three areas – openness to other disciplines and practices; support for different communicational channels; andvarious research approaches and methodologies – where a certain divergence could be observed between what the students perceived was important for their educational development, and how well their needs and wishes were met by the research school and its extended learning environment. We also found that the doctoral students valued the teaching experience they gained, and wished they had been able to teach more. In order to shed light on a process of enculturation that we see as potentially leading to a narrowing learning culture, we introduce and discuss the concept of what we call ‘hyperenculturation.’

  • In the evening, I don’t walk in the park”: Perceived design qualities, safety and neighbourhood walkability
  • 2019
  • In: ; , s. 187-187
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Introduction. Walking as a means of transportation is central in sustainable urban design. Little focus has, however, been placed on the influence of micro-level environmental features, such as vegetation and street lighting, on perceived safety and walking.Method. This study applied a non-explicit approach to explore the impact of greenery and outdoor lighting on neighborhood walkability. Participants (n = 106) from three neighborhoods in Malmö, Sweden, took part in focus group discussions concerning neighborhood qualities related to walking.Results. A thematic analysis revealed four inter-related themes relevant for perceived safety after dark: avoidance, entrapment, presence of others and prospect. The quality of greenery and street lighting impacted people’s route choices and forced some participants to make detours. In line with the prospect-refuge theory, entrapment, prospect and the presence of others influenced perceived safety, which in turn impacted whether the participants walked or not.Discussion. The results indicate that urban greenery and street lighting need to be considered jointly, since their interaction influences perceived safety and impacts the walkability of the neighbourhood. Providing good overview over the nearby surroundings, by sufficient lighting and/or well-kept greenery, may reduce perceived entrapment, but also directly improve perceived safety and encourage pedestrian use.

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Walking as a means of transportation is a key feature in sustainable urban design, but few studies have examined the influence of micro-level environmental features, such as vegetation and street lighting, on perceived safety and people’s choice to walk. This study applied a non-explicit approach to examine the relationship between greenery, street lighting, perceived safety, and walking in an urban context. Participants from three neighbourhoods in Malmö, Sweden, took part in focus group discussions concerning neighbourhood qualities related to walking. A qualitative analysis revealed four inter-related themes relevant for perceived safety after dark: avoidance, entrapment, presence of others, and prospect (visual overview of the nearby surroundings). The quality of urban greenery and street lighting impacted people’s route choices after dark, and some participants felt compelled to make detours. Entrapment, partly due to unkempt greenery in combination with darkness, contributed to avoidance, whereas the presence of other people had the opposite effect. The results indicate that urban greenery and street lighting must be considered together, since their interaction influences perceived safety and impacts the walkability of the neighbourhood.

  • Bilder av småstaden - om estetisk värdering av en stadstyp; Images of the Small Town - on Aesthetic Evaluation of a Townscape
  • 2007
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The thesis takes its starting-point in the last years' growing interests in the small town as an architectural concept. Pre-industrial small towns are used as visual and structural models for very attractive new settlements in Sweden. However, architects and other actors within the cultural sphere question the adequacy of using old models for new buildings. The thesis' overarching question is: What is it that makes the small town-like habitation much appreciated by lay people, and so controversial among architects? A poll study in the small town of Karlshamn shows that the inhabitants make very unanimous aesthetic valuations of the buildings and that the wooden buildings, the small scale and the square are the most appreciated features. Studies in the field of environmental psychology find a general aesthetic preference for features that can be related to the traditional small town, such as coherence and complexity by maintaining the same scale on buildings and by following a street line, while at the same time being varied in colour, form and expression; a variety of openness and enclosure; legible structure which facilitates orientation, richness in greenery and historic significance. Architects' aesthetic evaluation patterns reflect a modernistic discourse which implies that the use of historical references is strongly put into question. The wish to live in the new small town settlements is dismissed by many architects as conservative and nostalgic. Other professionals find qualities in the small town settlement which are lacking in the ordinary production of new houses. Some hope that the very essence of people's dreams can be turned into modern architecture and still attain the same appreciation. To the architect role is attached the task of interpreting our own time or developing a new, creative and visionary architectural style. The predominant building style in the architectural canon is - with few exceptions - modern. Non-modern architecture is thereby being excepted from the models of today's construction. Genuine small-town settlements are very sought-after on today's real estate market but constitutes a very small part of Sweden's housing areas. The findings of the thesis suggest that a contribution to existing urban structures in the form of small town settlements would be welcomed by many people.

  • Re-thinking urban flood management – time for a regime shift
  • 2016
  • In: Water. - : MDPI AG. - 2073-4441. ; 8:8
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Urban flooding is of growing concern due to increasing densification of urban areas, changes in land use, and climate change. The traditional engineering approach to flooding is designing single-purpose drainage systems, dams, and levees. These methods, however, are known to increase the long-term flood risk and harm the riverine ecosystems in urban as well as rural areas. In the present paper, we depart from resilience theory and suggest a concept to improve urban flood resilience. We identify areas where contemporary challenges call for improved collaborative urban flood management. The concept emphasizes resiliency and achieved synergy between increased capacity to handle stormwater runoff and improved experiential and functional quality of the urban environments. We identify research needs as well as experiments for improved sustainable and resilient stormwater management namely, flexibility of stormwater systems, energy use reduction, efficient land use, priority of transport and socioeconomic nexus, climate change impact, securing critical infrastructure, and resolving questions regarding responsibilities.
