  • Sex-Specific Risk Factors for Deep Venous Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism in a Population-Based Historical Cohort Study of Middle-Aged and Older Individuals
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Heart Association. - 2047-9980. ; 12:5, s. 1-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Whether sex-specific differences exist for risk factors for pulmonary embolism (PE) and deep venous thrombosis (DVT), with the exception of pregnancy and estrogen therapy, has been sparsely studied. We aimed to study whether sex-specific differences of risk factors exist for noncancer-related DVT and PE in middle-aged and older individuals without cardiovascular history or previous diagnosis in a population-based historical (retrospective) cohort. METHODS AND RESULTS: Potential venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk factors were registered at baseline in 15 807 women and 9996 men aged 44 to 74 years, who participated in the Malmö Diet and Cancer study (1991–1996). We excluded subjects with a previous history of VTE, cancer, a diagnosis of cardiovascular disease, or a diagnosis of cancer-associated VTE during follow-up. Patients were followed up from baseline until the first event of PE or DVT, death, or December 31, 2018. During the follow-up period, 365 (2.3%) women and 168 (1.7%) men were affected by first DVT, and 309 (2.0%) women and 154 (1.5%) men were affected by first PE. In the multivariable Cox regression models, the anthropometric obesity markers of weight, body mass index, waist and hip circumference, fat percentage, and muscle weight were in a dose-dependent way associated with DVT and PE among women but not men. In an analysis that included patients with cardiovascular disease and cancer-related VTE, the results were similar for women. For men, several obesity measures became significantly associated with PE or DVT but were weaker than in women, especially for DVT. CONCLUSIONS: Anthropometric obesity measures are more important risk factors for both DVT and PE among women than men, especially for individuals without cardiovascular history or previous diagnosis or cancer-related VTE.

  • Influence of chemical bonds on the lifetime of the molecular-field-split 2p levels in H2S
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A (Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics). - 1050-2947. ; 67, s. 22714:1-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Different lifetime broadenings in molecular-field-split 2p core levels in H2S are predicted theoretically and are identified in an experimental investigation of the S 2p Auger electron spectrum. The measurements were performed for the transition to the vibrationally resolved X(1)A(1) ground state of H2S2+. The lifetimes of the 3e(1/2) and 5e(1/2) levels of the 2p ionized molecule are found to be 64 and 74 meV, respectively. This unambiguous determination of the lifetime difference of 10+/-1 meV is only possible as the 4e(1/2)-->X(1)A(1)(2b(1)(-2)) decay channel that overlaps the 5e(1/2)-->X(1)A(1)(2b(1)(-2)) channel is practically suppressed in Auger decay in H2S. The lifetime difference is confirmed by ab initio calculations. A theoretical analysis shows that it results from the mutual orientation of the core hole in the intermediate states and the valence electron density in the sulfur 3p orbitals. Both are strongly influenced by the chemical bond. Thus the observed effect is the direct result of a fundamental property of molecular electronic structure.

  • Laser wakefield acceleration using wire produced double density ramps
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Special Topics. Accelerators and Beams. - 1098-4402. ; 16:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A novel approach to implement and control electron injection into the accelerating phase of a laser wakefield accelerator is presented. It utilizes a wire, which is introduced into the flow of a supersonic gas jet creating shock waves and three regions of differing plasma electron density. If tailored appropriately, the laser plasma interaction takes place in three stages: Laser self-compression, electron injection, and acceleration in the second plasma wave period. Compared to self-injection by wave breaking of a nonlinear plasma wave in a constant density plasma, this scheme increases beam charge by up to 1 order of magnitude in the quasimonoenergetic regime. Electron acceleration in the second plasma wave period reduces electron beam divergence by approximate to 25%, and the localized injection at the density downramps results in spectra with less than a few percent relative spread. • Characterization of olfactory sensory neurons in the red clover seed weevil, Protapion trifolii (Coleoptera : Brentidae) and comparison to the closely related species P. fulvipes
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Insect Physiology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-1910 .- 1879-1611. ; 119
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Protapion trifolii and P. fulvipes (Coleoptera: Brentidae) are major pests in European clover seed production. Previous studies have reported a high host plant fidelity of these weevils for red and white clover species, respectively, driven by host plant olfactory cues. Given the specific host preferences observed in these weevils, we aimed to elucidate to which extent such selectivity is reflected in their peripheral olfactory systems. Using an electrophysiological approach, we performed the first functional characterisation of olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) in P. trifolii to a panel of volatile compounds emitted by red clover plants, and compared the results with the reported OSN types of P. fulvipes. Nineteen OSN classes were characterized in P. trifolii, with the majority of these neurons responding strongly to common volatiles released by the host plant. Based on response profiles, eight of these OSN classes have clear matches to OSN classes in P. fulvipes. The OSN colocalisation patterns and antennal frequency of these classes are similar in the two species. Additionally, the responses of these OSNs are generally highly conserved in the two species, with clear response shifts only revealed for two of the OSN classes. These response shifts in combination with additional response dissimilarities for compounds that vary in abundance between red and white clover plants may underlie the species-specific host preferences. Further behavioural and field experiments should focus on these differentially detected compounds to elucidate their potential role in host selection and use in semiochemical-based control of these pests.

  • Algorithm for the Calculation of the Translator Position in Permanent Magnet Linear Generators
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy. - : AIP Publishing. - 1941-7012. ; 6:6, s. 063102-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A permanent magnet linear generator for direct drive wave energy converters is a suitable power take-off system for ocean wave energy extraction, especially when coupled with a point absorbing buoy via a connection line. The performance of the linear generator is affected by the excursion of the translator along the stator. The optimal stroke is achieved when the midpoint of the oscillations coincides with the center of the stator. However, sea level changes due to, e.g., tides will shift these oscillations. This paper proposes a model able to detect the position of the translator from the generator output voltage. The algorithm will be integrated in the control system of a mechanical device that adjusts the length of the connection line in order to center the average position of the translator with the center of the stator. Thereby, the output power from the wave energy converter increases, and the mechanical stresses on the hull of the generator decrease. The results obtained by the model show good agreement with the experimental results from two linear generators, L2 and L3, deployed in the Lysekil wave energy research site, Sweden. The theoretical results differ from the experimental results by −4 mm for L2 and 21 mm for L3 with a standard deviation of 27 mm and 31 mm, respectively.

  • Excitation transfer in polymer photodiodes for enhanced quantum efficiency
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Advanced Materials. - 0935-9648 .- 1521-4095. ; 12:15, s. 1110-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The realization of polymer solar cells is the driving force behind this research. In an idea inspired by photosynthesis, the authors have constructed efficient bilayer photodiodes by a well-chosen combination of conjugated polymers (see Figure) in the donor layer. Forster energy transfer within the donor layer allows the absorbed light to be channeled to the C-60 acceptor layer, improving the total photoconversion of the blend device.
