    • In thiswork, a wide-range operating synaptic device based on organic ferroelectricity has been demonstrated. The device possesses a simple two-terminal structure by using a ferroelectric phase-separated polymer blend as the active layer and gold/indium tin oxide (ITO) as the top/bottom electrodes, and exhibits a distinctive history-dependent resistive switching behavior at room temperature. And the device with low energy consumption (similar to 50 fJ mu m(-2) per synaptic event) can provide a reliable synaptic function of potentiation, depression and the complex memory behavior simulation of differential responses to diverse stimulations. In addition, using simulations, the accuracy of 32 x 32 pixel image recognition is improved from 76.21% to 85.06% in the classical model Cifar-10 with 1024 levels of the device, which is an important step towards the higher performance goal in image recognition based on memristive neuromorphic networks.

  • Aerosol jet printed silver nanowire transparent electrode for flexible electronic application

    • Aerosol jet printing technology enables fine feature deposition of electronic materials onto low-temperature, non-planar substrates without masks. In this work, silver nanowires (AgNWs) are proposed to be printed into transparent flexible electrodes using a Maskless Mesoscale Material Deposition Aerosol Jet VR printing system on a glass substrate. The influence of the most significant process parameters, including printing cycles, printing speed, and nozzle size, on the performance of AgNW electrodes was systematically studied. The morphologies of printed patterns were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, and the transmittance was evaluated using an ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer. Under optimum conditions, high transparent AgNW electrodes with a sheet resistance of 57.68 X/sq and a linewidth of 50.9 mu m were obtained, which is an important step towards a higher performance goal for flexible electronic applications.

    • We show that a ring resonator with mutual modes coupling can achieve pulse delay or advancement of tens nano-seconds, which is similar as a ring resonator with single mode. Nevertheless, the pulse response can be sensitively tunable either through mutual mode coupling or through waveguide-ring coupling in the vicinity of resonant frequency.

    • Organometal halide perovskites can be processed from solutions at low temperatures to form crystalline direct-bandgap semiconductors with promising optoelectronic properties(1-5). However, the efficiency of their electroluminescence is limited by non-radiative recombination, which is associated with defects and leakage current due to incomplete surface coverage(6-9). Here we demonstrate a solution-processed perovskite light-emitting diode (LED) based on self-organized multiple quantum wells (MQWs) with excellent film morphologies. The MQW-based LED exhibits a very high external quantum efficiency of up to 11.7%, good stability and exceptional highpower performance with an energy conversion efficiency of 5.5% at a current density of 100 mA cm(-2). This outstanding performance arises because the lower bandgap regions that generate electroluminescence are effectively confined by perovskite MQWs with higher energy gaps, resulting in very efficient radiative decay. Surprisingly, there is no evidence that the large interfacial areas between different bandgap regions cause luminescence quenching.

  • Fluorine-containing agrochemicals in the last decade and approaches for fluorine incorporation

    • In this review, the methodologies for fluorine incorporation of 40 fluorine-containing agrochemicals that received an international standardization organization (ISO) name during the last decade are described. The predominant approach for fluorine introduction of these agrochemicals is to use a fluorine-containing building block. Here we present how the fluorine-containing building blocks are introduced into these agrochemicals. The synthetic methods of fluorine-containing building blocks that are not easily available are also specifically discussed. Fluoroarenes, difluomethylarenes and trifluomethylarenes are the main building blocks that have been used in this review. Fluorine-containing small molecules, such as alcohol, amine, ketoester, olefin are also widely used. The only example of late-stage fluorination is the synthesis of fungicide quinofumelin. We believe the fluorine introduction methods described here can provide ideas for the development of new and economical pesticide synthetic routes, and stimulate researchers to develop new fluorine incorporation methods and create new pesticides.

  • A two-stage stochastic nonlinear integer-programming model for slot allocation of a liner container shipping service

    • In this study, we propose a container slot allocation problem for a liner shipping service. A liner containership provides a regular shipping service with a fixed itinerary and schedule. In practice, the liner containership may not be fully loaded, which results in a loss of revenue. We therefore segment shippers into two classes: contract shippers and spot shippers. A contract shipper has a contract with the shipping company and negotiates a fixed minimum quantity, so that the shipping company can secure a steady revenue. The remaining containership slots are open to spot shippers, allowing the shipping company to obtain ad hoc revenue. The container slot allocation problem is investigated in this study using a two-stage stochastic mixed-integer nonlinear programming model. We use the sample average approximation based on Lagrangian relaxation and dual decomposition techniques to effectively solve the model. Finally, we conduct a case study to evaluate the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed model and the solution algorithm.

    • The effects of tungsten and aluminum additions to Mo–Si system on the formation of MoSi2 by mechanically-induced self-propagating reaction in a high-energy ball mill were investigated by X-ray diffraction. The incubation time for mechanically-induced self-propagating reaction to form MoSi2 was 90 min in Mo–Si system. With the addition of tungsten to Mo–Si system, the incubation time of mechanically-induced self-propagating reaction of (Wx,Mo1−x)Si2 system was prolonged. It was due to the decrease of adiabatic temperature with increase in x, and the mechanically-induced self-propagating reaction was not observed until 150 min of high-energy milling in (Wx,Mo1−x)Si2 powder sample with x equals to 0.4. Conversely, the minor aluminum (y < 0.2 in Mo(Si1−y,Aly)2 system) substituting for silicon had shorten the incubation period and accelerated the reaction. When tungsten and aluminium were added simultaneously to Mo–Si system, the mechanically-induced self-propagating reaction was observed in (W0.1,Mo0.9)(Si0.9,Al0.1)2 sample, but it was not observed in (W0.2,Mo0.8)(Si0.8,Al0.2)2 and (W0.3,Mo0.7)(Si0.7,Al0.3)2 samples.

  • Characterization and formation mechanism of non-metallic inclusions in single bcc-phase high entropy alloy

    • This work aims to provide a fundamental study of inclusion characteristics in the single bcc-phase high entropy alloy (HEA), Mn-rich and Al-contained multicomponent system (Al-Cr-Mn-Fe-Co-Ni) was selected as the prototype alloy in this study. According to the differential thermal analysis (DTA) measurements, the solidus (TS) and liquidus (TL) temperatures of this alloy were in the range of 1225–1228 °C (1226 ± 2 °C) and 1268–1271 °C (1270 ± 2 °C), respectively. Non-metallic inclusions were investigated in a two-dimensional (2D) cross-section method as well as extracted by a three-dimensional (3D) electrolytic extraction method. It was found that AlN was the dominant inclusion phase, also a small amount of Al2O3 inclusions were observed. They formed in the liquid alloy and mostly presented as Al2O3-AlN agglomerates, where the size range of the AlN inclusions was larger than that of Al2O3. The theoretical calculation showed that AlN inclusion has a higher coagulation coefficient and collision rate than those of Al2O3 inclusions, which agrees well with the experimental observations. The inclusion characteristics of Al2O3 and AlN were closely related to the relative contents of O and N in the presence of high Al content in the alloy. The impurity elements of N and O were the key issues in controling the stable inclusion phase in high entropic alloy.

  • Combination of In Situ Confocal Microscopy and Calorimetry to Investigate Solidification of Super- and Hyper-Duplex Stainless Steels

    • The solidification processes of super- and hyper-duplex stainless steels (i.e., UNS S32750 and S 33 207) are investigated in situ by a high-temperature confocal laser scanning microscope (HT-CLSM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The variations of δ-ferrite phase fraction during solidification are measured quantitatively. The results show that liquid L→δ-ferrite transformation first occurs at a certain degree of supercooling during the solidification process of steel. UNS S3DSS 3207 with a higher Cr content can result in a higher nucleation temperature and faster growth of δ-ferrite compared to those of UNS S332750 steel. Moreover, both the liquidus (TL) and solidus temperatures (TS) are increased with the increasing Cr content, while TL increases greater than TS. Electron microscopies are used to quantify the fraction and composition of each phase. Scheil equation is employed to predict the distribution behavior of the main alloying elements in the solidification process, and the predicted results are consistent with the experimental findings. This study aims to provide real-time experimental insights into the solidification kinetics of state-of-the-art high-alloy-grade duplex steels and benefits for controlling the casting process in the real production of stainless steels.
