  • Adsorption of phenanthrene on Al (oxy) hydroxides formed under the influence of tannic acid
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Environmental Earth Sciences. - 1866-6280. ; 71:2, s. 773-782
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although there has been substantial research done on adsorption of metals/metalloids by Al (oxy)hydroxides, little is known regarding the adsorption of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on Al (oxy)hydroxides, especially those formed in the presence of organic acid. This paper investigated the adsorption of phenanthrene on Al (oxy)hydroxides formed with initial tannate/Al molar ratios (MRs) 0, 0.001, 0.01, and 0.1 (referred to MR0, MR0.001, MR0.01, and MR0.1, respectively) through batch adsorption experiments and FTIR study. The results showed that Al (oxy)hydroxides were important sorbents for phenanthrene. The adsorption kinetic data were fitted well with the pseudo-second-order equation. According to a modified Freundlich model, the adsorption capacities of Al (oxy)hydroxides followed a descending order of MR0.1 > MR0 ≥ MR0.01 > MR0.001, which was inconsistent with the organic carbon content in the Al (oxy)hydroxides. Adsorption capacity correlated with the specific surface area, micropore area, and micropore diameter of Al (oxy)hydroxides, yet the relationships were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). FTIR results showed that physical interaction was essential in phenanthrene adsorption onto the Al (oxy)hydroxides, which could be explained by an entropy-driven process. Surface hydrophobicity of Al (oxy)hydroxides played a key role in phenanthrene adsorption. Additional π–π electron donor–acceptor interaction of phenanthrene (acting as electron donor) with aromatic ring of tannic acid (electron acceptor) could be also important in phenanthrene adsorption by high MR Al (oxy)hydroxides, yet it needs further study. The findings obtained in the present study are of fundamental significance in understanding the mechanism of immobilization of PAHs in low organic matter but oxide-rich soils.

  • Hot Carrier Dynamics and Charge Trapping in Surface Passivated beta-CsPbI3 Inorganic Perovskite
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters. - : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 1948-7185. ; 12:29, s. 6907-6913
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thermodynamically stable CsPbI3 inorganic perovskite has achieved high efficiency exceeding 20% with surface defect passivation, but a thorough understanding on the photophysics properties of surface passivated CsPbI3 inorganic perovskite is still lacking. Herein, we have used transient absorption spectroscopy to investigate the photophysical properties of beta-CsPbI3 perovskites with and without passivation. The results indicate that the carrier trapping process has become slower because of the reduced deep defects that were varied to shallow defects due to surface passivation. The bimolecular recombination of beta-CsPbI3 was also accelerated because of the improved carrier mobility after healing surface defects by passivation agents. Moreover, the efficient defect passivation can also elongate the hot carrier lifetime from 0.26 to 0.37 ps by impeding the charge trapping process. Our findings reveal that the defects passivation is beneficial to enhance defect tolerance, improve carrier transport, and slow down the hot carrier cooling for developing high-performance photovoltaics.

  • What is the Role of Nb on Preferential Hydriding of Double-Phased Uranium, Stabilizing gamma-U, or Avoiding Hydrogen Aggregation?
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 125:17, s. 9364-9370
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Uranium as the heaviest naturally occurring element plays important roles in nuclear industries. Hydrogen-caused corrosions and irradiation-caused structural damages are two critical degradations that threaten the safe storage and practical applications of uranium. Through alloying with transition metals like Nb, the gamma-phase of U can be stabilized at room temperature, which shows better performance against hydrogen-caused corrosions than the ground-state alpha-U. The underlying mechanisms have not been fully understood yet. To explain the preferential hydriding phenomenon observed on a specially fabricated double-phase U-2.5 wt % Nb alloy, we perform multiscale ab initio calculations and kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations. We find that because of different diffusion mechanisms, intrinsic alpha-U and gamma-U already show different hydrogen accumulation behaviors. The existence of random Nb atoms further inhibits hydrogen accumulation in gamma-U. Our work declares its contribution by pointing out the important role of crystal lattice architectures on hydrogen accumulations in metals.

  • Porous Carbon Membrane-Supported Atomically Dispersed Pyrrole-Type Fe-N-4 as Active Sites for Electrochemical Hydrazine Oxidation Reaction
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Small. - : Wiley. - 1613-6810 .- 1613-6829. ; 16:31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The rational design of catalytically active sites in porous materials is essential in electrocatalysis. Herein, atomically dispersed Fe-N-x sites supported by hierarchically porous carbon membranes are designed to electrocatalyze the hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR), one of the key techniques in electrochemical nitrogen transformation. The high intrinsic catalytic activity of the Fe-N-x single-atom catalyst together with the uniquely mixed micro-/macroporous membrane support positions such an electrode among the best-known heteroatom-based carbon anodes for hydrazine fuel cells. Combined with advanced characterization techniques, electrochemical probe experiments, and density functional theory calculation, the pyrrole-type Fe-N-4 structure is identified as the real catalytic site in HzOR.

  • Exogenous PTHrP Repairs the Damaged Fracture Healing of PTHrP plus /- Mice and Accelerates Fracture Healing of Wild Mice
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Molecular Sciences. - : MDPI. - 1661-6596 .- 1422-0067. ; 18:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bone fracture healing is a complicated physiological regenerative process initiated in response to injury and is similar to bone development. To demonstrate whether an exogenous supply of parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) helps in bone fracture healing, closed mid-diaphyseal femur fractures were created and stabilized with intramedullary pins in eight-week-old wild-type (WT) PTHrP+/+ and PTHrP+/- mice. After administering PTHrP for two weeks, callus tissue properties were analyzed at one, two, and four weeks post-fracture (PF) by various methods. Bone formation-related genes and protein expression levels were evaluated by real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and Western blots. At two weeks PF, mineral density of callus, bony callus areas, mRNA levels of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), type I collagen, Runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx-2), and protein levels of Runx-2 and insulin-like growth factor-1 decreased in PTHrP+/- mice compared with WT mice. At four weeks PF, total collagen-positive bony callus areas, osteoblast number, ALP-positive areas, and type I collagen-positive areas all decreased in PTHrP+/- mice. At both two and four weeks PF, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-positive osteoclast number and surface decreased a little in PTHrP+/- mice. The study indicates that exogenous PTHrP provided by subcutaneous injection could redress impaired bone fracture healing, leading to mutation of activated PTHrP by influencing callus areas, endochondral bone formation, osteoblastic bone formation, and bone turnover.

  • Surface Reconstruction on Uniform Cu Nanodisks Boosted Electrochemical Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: ACS Materials Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2639-4979. ; 4, s. 650-656
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Haber-Bosch (HB) process has provided most of commercial ammonia at the expense of high energy consumption and high CO2 emission. Nitrate electroreduction is showing great potential as an alternative route for the green and scale-up synthesis of ammonia at ambient conditions. However, the performance has lagged due to lack of efficient electrocatalysts. In this work, we present the facile synthesis of uniform Cu nanodisks with exposed (111) facets as highly active electrocatalyst for electrochemical ammonia synthesis, delivering a high ammonia yield of 2.16 mg mg-1cat h-1 and a maximum Faradaic efficiency of 81.1% at -0.5 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). The remarkable activity is originated from the surface reconstructed triatomic Cu clusters due to the cathodic deoxygenation process. As a result, the reconstructed surface shows enhanced affinity to the adsorption of nitrate ions which undergo successive break of three N-O bonds, followed by subsequent formation of three N-H bonds to finally form NH3. The present study provides the feasible preparation of Cu based advanced catalysts and a unique insight into the mechanism of nitrate electroreduction.

  • Toward best practice in cancer mutation detection with whole-genome and whole-exome sequencing
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature Biotechnology. - : Springer Nature. - 1087-0156 .- 1546-1696. ; 39:9, s. 1141-1150
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recommendations are given on optimal read coverage and selection of calling algorithm to maximize the reproducibility of cancer mutation detection in whole-genome or whole-exome sequencing. Clinical applications of precision oncology require accurate tests that can distinguish true cancer-specific mutations from errors introduced at each step of next-generation sequencing (NGS). To date, no bulk sequencing study has addressed the effects of cross-site reproducibility, nor the biological, technical and computational factors that influence variant identification. Here we report a systematic interrogation of somatic mutations in paired tumor-normal cell lines to identify factors affecting detection reproducibility and accuracy at six different centers. Using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and whole-exome sequencing (WES), we evaluated the reproducibility of different sample types with varying input amount and tumor purity, and multiple library construction protocols, followed by processing with nine bioinformatics pipelines. We found that read coverage and callers affected both WGS and WES reproducibility, but WES performance was influenced by insert fragment size, genomic copy content and the global imbalance score (GIV; G > T/C > A). Finally, taking into account library preparation protocol, tumor content, read coverage and bioinformatics processes concomitantly, we recommend actionable practices to improve the reproducibility and accuracy of NGS experiments for cancer mutation detection.

  • Uncovering a Distinct Gene Signature in Endothelial Cells Associated With Contrast Enhancement in Glioblastoma
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Oncology. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 2234-943X. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive and lethal type of brain tumors. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been commonly used for GBM diagnosis. Contrast enhancement (CE) on T1-weighted sequences are presented in nearly all GBM as a result of high vascular permeability in glioblastomas. Although several radiomics studies indicated that CE is associated with distinct molecular signatures in tumors, the effects of vascular endothelial cells, the key component of blood brain barrier (BBB) controlling vascular permeability, on CE have not been thoroughly analyzed. Methods Endothelial cell enriched genes have been identified using transcriptome data from 128 patients by a systematic method based on correlation analysis. Distinct endothelial cell enriched genes associated with CE were identified by analyzing difference of correlation score between CE-high and CE-low GBM cases. Immunohistochemical staining was performed on in-house patient cohort to validate the selected genes associated with CE. Moreover, a survival analysis was conducted to uncover the relation between CE and patient survival. Results We illustrated that CE is associated with distinct vascular molecular imprints characterized by up-regulation of pro-inflammatory genes and deregulation of BBB related genes. Among them, PLVAP is up-regulated, whereas TJP1 and ABCG2 are down-regulated in the vasculature of GBM with high CE. In addition, we found that the high CE is associated with poor prognosis and GBM mesenchymal subtype. Conclusion We provide an additional insight to reveal the molecular trait for CE in MRI images with special focus on vascular endothelial cells, linking CE with BBB disruption in the molecular level. This study provides a potential new direction that may be applied for the treatment optimization based on MRI features.

  • Holocene forcing of aeolian dust activity over the Tibetan Plateau and its surroundings
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Global and Planetary Change. - 0921-8181 .- 1872-6364. ; 235
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aeolian deposits on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) and its surroundings provide crucial source materials for the Asian dust cycle, which significantly affects Asian and global ecosystems and climate. However, it is unclear how the dust dynamics of the TP and its surroundings are linked to Earth's climate system. To address this issue, we examined the grain size and accumulation rate of six Holocene aeolian sections on the southern TP (a new, well-dated high-resolution section, two relatively low-resolution sections, and three published sections) and combined them with equivalent aeolian sedimentary records from eastern arid central Asia. The results suggest that dust activity in both regions decreased during the early to middle Holocene and then increased in the late Holocene. We hypothesize that the primary drivers of Holocene dust activity in both regions are similar. Cold-season insolation, as the primary driving factor, combined with ice volume and atmospheric CO2 concentration, collectively controlled the regional temperature, which determined the near-surface wind intensity via its influence on the TP High and Siberian High, respectively, thus ultimately controlling the regional dust activity. In this context, we project that dust activity on the TP and its neighboring areas will decrease under warm scenarios in the 21st century. Overall, our findings provide an extensive overview of the past, present, and future scenarios of Asian dust activity, especially of the TP dust.

  • In-situ loading synthesis of graphene supported PtCu nanocube and its high activity and stability for methanol oxidation reaction
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Colloid and Interface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0021-9797 .- 1095-7103. ; 595, s. 107-117
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A perfect PtCu nanocube with partial hollow structure was prepared by hydrothermal reaction and its electrocatalytic methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) was studied. The appropriate concentration of shape-control additives KI and triblock pluronic copolymers, poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO19-PPO69-PEO19) (P123) play crucial roles in the final product morphology. The PtCu nanocubes can be perfectly in situ immobilizedonto graphene under the action of P123 while the structure and cubic morphologyremain unchanged. The electrochemical tests suggest that the obtained PtCu nanocube (PtCu-NCb) exhibits better MOR activity and stability than PtCu hexagon nanosheet (PtCu-NSt), PtCu nanoellipsoid (PtCu-NEs) and commercial Pt/C in alkaline medium. When in situ immobilized onto graphene, the MOR catalytic activity and stability of PtCu cubes are further improved. The markedly enhanced electrocatalytic activity and durability maybe attributed to the special cubic morphology with partial hollow structure enclosed by highly efficient facet and the probably the synergistic effect of PtCu and intermediate state CuI decorated on the surface and graphene.
