  • Carboxyl-Functionalized and Bio-Conjugated Silica-Coated Quantum Dots as Targeting Probes for Cell Imaging
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. - : American Scientific Publishers. - 1533-4880 .- 1533-4899. ; 10:3, s. 1668-1675
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the synthesis of carboxyl-functionalized silica-coated CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) via a reverse microemulsion approach. This facile method does not need to change the solvent phase of the nanoparticles during the synthesis process, and requires no other reaction condition such as high temperature or inertia atmosphere. The synthesized nanoparticles have many advantages, such as mono-dispersed and stable in aqueous solution, minimal non-specific targeting, and more direct and cost-effective for bio-conjugation. The carboxyl functionalized nanoparticles were further conjugated with apo-transferrin for receptor-mediated targeting in cancer cell lines. In vitro experiments have revealed that the cellular uptake of Tf-conjugated nanoparticles was significantly higher than that of (only-)carboxyl functionalized nanoparticles in HeLa cells, which are well known to over-express the transferrin-receptor. The bio-conjugated nanoparticles are potentially useful as efficient probes for bio-diagnosis, both in vitro and in vivo.

  • Electrochemical and electrical properties of doped CeO2-ZnO composite for low-temperature solid oxide fuel cell applications
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Power Sources. - : Elsevier. - 0378-7753 .- 1873-2755. ; 392, s. 33-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Zinc oxide (ZnO) as a multi-function semiconductor is widely known for photocatalysis and electronic applications but exceptionally new in Solid State Ionics. In this study, a new semiconducting-ionic conductor is reported for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) applications by composing ZnO with an ionic conductor La/Pr co-doped CeO2 (LCP) in various mass ratios. The prepared composites acting as membranes are sandwiched between two Ni0.8Co0.15Al0.05LiO2-δ (NCAL) electrodes to construct fuel cells. A remarkable maximum power output of 1055 mW cm−2 is attained along with a high open circuit voltage (OCV) of 1.04 V at 550 °C by the fuel cell using an optimal composition of 7LCP-3ZnO. The electrical properties of the composites as a function of LCP/ZnO ratio are studied through EIS measurements and polarization curves. It has been found that the composite of 7LCP-3ZnO exhibits a higher ionic conductivity than other composite samples at 475–550 °C, while possessing both high electronic and ionic conduction. Our further investigation also verifies the appreciable protonic conduction in LCP-ZnO, suggesting that the developed composite is a triple O2-/H+/e− conducting material. Additionally, rectification characteristic of the best-performance cell is also measured to interpret the high OCVs and power outputs of LCP-ZnO fuel cells.

  • Particulate matter air pollution components and risk for lung cancer
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Environment International. - : Elsevier BV. - 0160-4120 .- 1873-6750. ; 87, s. 66-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Particulate matter (PM) air pollution is a human lung carcinogen; however, the components responsible have not been identified. We assessed the associations between PM components and lung cancer incidence. Methods: We used data from 14 cohort studies in eight European countries. We geocoded baseline addresses and assessed air pollution with land-use regression models for eight elements (Cu, Fe, K, Ni, S, Si, V and Zn) in size fractions of PM2.5 and PM10. We used Cox regression models with adjustment for potential confounders for cohort-specific analyses and random effect models for meta-analysis. Results: The 245,782 cohort members contributed 3,229,220 person-years at risk. During follow-up (mean, 13.1 years), 1878 incident cases of lung cancer were diagnosed. In the meta-analyses, elevated hazard ratios (HRs) for lung cancer were associated with all elements except V; none was statistically significant In analyses restricted to participants who did not change residence during follow-up, statistically significant associations were found for PM2.5 Cu (HR, 125; 95% Cl, 1.01-1.53 per 5 ng/m(3)), PM10 Zn (1.28; 1.02-1.59 per 20 ng/m3), PMio S (1.58; 1.03-2.44 per 200 ng/m(3)), PM10 Ni (1.59; 1.12-2.26 per 2 ng/m(3)) and PM10K (1.17; 1.02-1.33 per 100 ng/m(3)). In two-pollutant models, associations between PMio and PM2.5 and lung cancer were largely explained by PM2.5 S. Conclusions: This study indicates that the association between PM in air pollution and lung cancer can be attributed to various PM components and sources. PM containing S and Ni might be particularly important.

  • Conformal Macroporous Inverse Opal Oxynitride-Based Photoanode for Robust Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 143:19, s. 7402-7413
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Direct photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is of prime importance in sustainable energy conversion systems; however, it is a big challenge to simultaneously control light harvesting and charge transport for the improvement of PEC performance. Herein, we report a three-dimensional ordered macroporous (3DOM) CsTaWO6-xNx inverse opal array as a promising candidate for the first time. To address the critical challenge, an ultrathin carbon-nitride-based layer-intercalated 3DOM CsTaWO6-xNx architecture as a conformal heterojunction photoanode was assembled. This state-of-the-art conformal heterojunction photoanode with carrier-separation efficiency up to 88% achieves a high current density of 4.59 mA cm-2 at 1.6 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (vs RHE) under simulated AM 1.5G illumination, which is approximately 3.4 and 17 times larger than that of pristine CsTaWO6-xNx inverse opals and powers photoelectrodes in alkaline media, corresponding to an incident photon-to-current efficiency of 32% at 400 nm and outstanding stability for PEC water splitting. Density functional theory calculations propose that the intimate interface of a conformal photoanode optimizes the charge separation and transfer, thus enhancing the intrinsic water oxidation performance. This work enables us to elucidate the pivotal importance of 3DOM architectures and conformal heterostructures and the promising contributions to excellent PEC water-splitting applications.
