  • Integrating concepts and technologies to advance the study of bird migration
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment. - : Wiley. - 1540-9309 .- 1540-9295. ; 8:7, s. 354-361
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent technological innovation has opened new avenues in migration research - for instance, by allowing individual migratory animals to be followed over great distances and long periods of time, as well as by recording physiological information. Here, we focus on how technology - specifically applied to bird migration - has advanced our knowledge of migratory connectivity, and the behavior, demography, ecology, and physiology of migrants. Anticipating the invention of new and smaller tracking devices, in addition to the ways that technologies may be combined to measure and record the behavior of migratory animals, we also summarize major conceptual questions that can only be addressed once innovative, cutting-edge instrumentation becomes available.

  • Ranking and characterization of established BMI and lipid associated loci as candidates for gene-environment interactions
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: PLOS Genetics. - : Public Library Science. - 1553-7390 .- 1553-7404. ; 13:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Phenotypic variance heterogeneity across genotypes at a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) may reflect underlying gene-environment (GxE) or gene-gene interactions. We modeled variance heterogeneity for blood lipids and BMI in up to 44,211 participants and investigated relationships between variance effects (P-v), GxE interaction effects (with smoking and physical activity), and marginal genetic effects (P-m). Correlations between P-v and P-m were stronger for SNPs with established marginal effects (Spearman's rho = 0.401 for triglycerides, and rho = 0.236 for BMI) compared to all SNPs. When P-v and P-m were compared for all pruned SNPs, only BMI was statistically significant (Spearman's rho = 0.010). Overall, SNPs with established marginal effects were overrepresented in the nominally significant part of the P-v distribution (P-binomial < 0.05). SNPs from the top 1% of the P-m distribution for BMI had more significant P-v values (Pmann-Whitney = 1.46x10(-5)), and the odds ratio of SNPs with nominally significant (< 0.05) P-m and P-v was 1.33 (95% CI: 1.12, 1.57) for BMI. Moreover, BMI SNPs with nominally significant GxE interaction P-values (Pint < 0.05) were enriched with nominally significant P-v values (P-binomial = 8.63x10(-9) and 8.52x10(-7) for SNP x smoking and SNP x physical activity, respectively). We conclude that some loci with strong marginal effects may be good candidates for GxE, and variance-based prioritization can be used to identify them.

  • 4MOST Scientific Operations
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Messenger. - 0722-6691. ; 175, s. 12-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The 4MOST instrument is a multi-object spectrograph that will address Galactic and extragalactic science cases simultaneously by observing targets from a large number of different surveys within each science exposure. This parallel mode of operation and the survey nature of 4MOST require some distinct 4MOST- specific operational features within the overall operations model of ESO. The main feature is that the 4MOST Consortium will deliver, not only the instrument, but also contractual services to the user community, which is why 4MOST is also described as a facility. This white paper concentrates on information particularly useful to answering the forthcoming Call for Letters of Intent.

  • Longitudinal momentum distributions of C-16,C-18 fragments after one-neutron removal from C-17,C-19
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - 0370-2693. ; 439:3-4, s. 256-261
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fragment separator FRS at GSI was used as an energy-loss spectrometer to measure the longitudinal momentum distributions of C-16,C-18 fragments after one-neutron removal reactions in C-17,C-19 impinging on a carbon target at about 910 MeV/u. The distributions in the projectile frames are characterized by a FWHM of 141 +/- 6 MeV/c for C-16 and 69 +/- 3 MeV/c for C-18. Th, results are compared with experimental data obtained at lower energies and discussed within existing theoretical models. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. AU rights reserved.

  • CALIFA, a Dedicated Calorimeter for the R3B/FAIR
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Data Sheets. - : Elsevier BV. - 1095-9904 .- 0090-3752. ; 120, s. 99-101
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The R3B experiment (Reactions with Relativistic Radioactive Beams) at FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) is a versatile setup dedicated to the study of reactions induced by high-energy radioactive beams. It will provide kinematically complete measurements with high efficiency, acceptance and resolution, making possible a broad physics program with rare-isotopes. CALIFA (CALorimeter for In-Flight detection of gamma-rays and high energy charged pArticles), is a complex detector based on scintillation crystals, that will surround the target of the R3B experiment. CALIFA will act as a total absorption gamma-calorimeter and spectrometer, as well as identifier of charged particles from target residues. This versatility is its most challenging requirement, demanding a huge dynamic range, to cover from low energy gamma-rays up to 300 MeV protons. This fact, along with the high-energy of the beams determine the conceptual design of the detector, presented in this paper, together with the technical solutions proposed for its construction.

  • Novel Loci for Adiponectin Levels and Their Influence on Type 2 Diabetes and Metabolic Traits : A Multi-Ethnic Meta-Analysis of 45,891 Individuals
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: PLOS Genetics. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1553-7390 .- 1553-7404. ; 8:3, s. e1002607-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Circulating levels of adiponectin, a hormone produced predominantly by adipocytes, are highly heritable and are inversely associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) and other metabolic traits. We conducted a meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies in 39,883 individuals of European ancestry to identify genes associated with metabolic disease. We identified 8 novel loci associated with adiponectin levels and confirmed 2 previously reported loci (P=4.5 x 10(-8)-1.2 x 10(-43)). Using a novel method to combine data across ethnicities (N = 4,232 African Americans, N = 1,776 Asians, and N = 29,347 Europeans), we identified two additional novel loci. Expression analyses of 436 human adipocyte samples revealed that mRNA levels of 18 genes at candidate regions were associated with adiponectin concentrations after accounting for multiple testing (p<3 x 10(-4)). We next developed a multi-SNP genotypic risk score to test the association of adiponectin decreasing risk alleles on metabolic traits and diseases using consortia-level meta-analytic data. This risk score was associated with increased risk of T2D (p=4.3 x 10(-3), n = 22,044), increased triglycerides (p=2.6 x 10(-14), n = 93,440), increased waist-to-hip ratio (p=1.8 x 10(-5), n = 77,167), increased glucose two hours post oral glucose tolerance testing (p=4.4 x 10(-3), n = 15,234), increased fasting insulin (p = 0.015, n = 48,238), but with lower in HDL-cholesterol concentrations (p=4.5x10(-13), n = 96,748) and decreased BMI (p= 1.4 x 10(-14), n = 121,335). These findings identify novel genetic determinants of adiponectin levels, which, taken together, influence risk of T2D and markers of insulin resistance.

  • Exploring the anomaly in the interaction cross section and matter radius of 23O
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993 .- 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 84:6, s. art. no. 061304(R)-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New measurements of the interaction cross sections of 22,23O at 900A MeV performed at the GSI, Darmstadt are reported that address the unsolved puzzle of the large cross section previously observed for 23O. The matter radii for these oxygen isotopes extracted through a Glauber model analysis are in good agreement with the new predictions of the ab initio coupled-cluster theory reported here. They are consistent with a 22O+neutron description of 23O as well.

  • Matter radii of 32-35Mg
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993 .- 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 83:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interaction cross sections of Mg32-35 at 900A MeV have been measurmed using the fragment separator at GSI. The deviation from the r(0)A(1/3) trend is slightly larger for Mg-35, signaling the possible formation of a longer tail in the neutron distribution for Mg-35. The radii extracted from a Glauber model analysis with Fermi densities are consistent with models predicting the development of neutron skins.
