  • Cells and holograms : holograms and digital holographic microscopy as a tool to study the morphology of living cells
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Holography. - : INTECH. - 9789535111177 ; , s. 335-351
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We present a method to study the morphology of living, dividing and dying cells using DHM. DHM is a non-invasive, non-destructive and non-phototoxic method which allows the user to perform both qualitative and quantitative measurements of living cells over time. We show here our results on cell division and cell death in single cells. The morphological analyses performed here show changes caused by cell death and cell division, and indicate the possibilities to discriminate between different types of cell death. Cells dying in an apoptosis-like manner display different cell area and cell thickness profiles over time compared to cells dying in a necrosis-like manner, although their volume profiles are very similar. Dividing cells show a characteristic dip in the volume profile, which makes them easily distinguishable. Also, several previous studies show the versatile abilities of DHM. Different cell types have been studied and the morphology has been used to determine cell functionality as well as changes in morphology related to the environment. Cell morphology parameters can be very useful when following the effects of different treatments, the process of differentiation as well as cell growth and cell death. Cell morphology studied by DHM can be useful in toxicology, stem cell and cancer research.

  • Nurses' knowledge about palliative care in an intensive care unit in Saudi Arabia
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Middle East Journal of Nursing. - 1834-8742. ; 9:1, s. 7-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Most patients die in hospital settings either in intensive care unit (ICU), emergency department (ED) or other departments. In Saudi Arabia, approximately 23,000 persons are diagnosed with cancer every year. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), palliative care is a holistic activity that involves physical, psychosocial and spiritual human needs to enhance quality of life for patients and their families. Palliative care is an essential aspect to be applied for patients with chronic diseases to improve their quality of life. Earlier studies have shown that physicians, nurses and nurse assistants who work in long-term care settings lack the knowledge to enforce palliative care principles due to lack of education. According to the WHO, health care professionals should be educated and trained to apply palliative care.Aim: The aim of this study was to explore nurses' knowledge about palliative care in an intensive care unit in Saudi Arabia. Method: Eight individual qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted. Interviews were audiotaped and transcribed verbatim. Manifest content analysis was used to analyze the data. Results: The palliative care concept was not familiar for most ICU nurses but it was applied in their daily work. Most nurses provided physical care at the end of life to keep the body intact. Some nurses highlighted that dying patients did not feel pain to be treated and did not have emotions to be supported. Conclusions: Nurses had insufficient knowledge of palliative care and how to apply it in ICU setting. The provision of additional education in palliative care is recommended in order to improve the knowledge of palliative care among nurses.

  • Interpretable PET/CT Radiomic Based Prognosis Modeling of NSCLC Recurrent Following Complete Resection
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 2022 IEEE NSS/MIC RTSD - IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium, Medical Imaging Conference and Room Temperature Semiconductor Detector Conference. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9781665488723
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aimed to develop an interpretable prognostic model with a nomogram for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) recurrence prediction following complete resection, using multi-modality PET/CT fusion radiomics and patients' clinical features. Retrospectively, 181 NSCLC patients who had undergone18F-FDG PET/CT scan were enrolled and split into training (2/3) and testing (1/3) partitions. Before image fusion, PET and CT images were registered, resized to equal isotropic voxel size, and clipped and normalized. Guided Filtering Fusion GFF algorithm was used for image fusion. Two hundred eighteen radiomic features were extracted from each PET, CT, and fused image, including morphological, first-order statistical, and texture features. Clinical features included age, sex, smoking status, weight, radiation, chemotherapy, pathological stage, etc. Feature selection and univariate and multivariate modeling were performed using the CoxBoost algorithm. Harrell's Concordance index (C-index) was used to evaluate the performance of the models, and compare C test was used to statistically compare the performance of the models (p-values < 0.05 were considered significant). Clinical, Clinical+PET, Clinical+CT, and Clinical+GFF resulted in c-indices (confidence interval) of 0.701 (0.589-0.812), 0.757 (0.647-0.867), 0.706 (0.607, 0.807), and 0.824 (0.751-0.896), respectively. Statistical comparison of the performance of different models with the Clinical model revealed that while PET and GFF features can significantly increase the performance (p-values 0.009 and 0.001, respectively), CT features did not significantly improve the performance of the Clinical model (p-value 0.279). Therefore, the nomogram was developed based on the Clinical+GFF model (with the best performance). Radiomic features extracted from PET and PET/CT fusion images can improve the recurrence prognosis in NSCLC patients compared to the conventional clinical factors alone.

  • Facile encapsulation of cyanoacrylate-based bioadhesive by electrospray method and investigation of the process parameters
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Nature Research. - 2045-2322. ; 14:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Polymer microcapsules containing cyanoacrylates have represented a promising option to develop self-healing biomaterials. This study aims to develop an electrospray method for the preparation of capsules using poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as the encapsulant and ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate (EC) as the encapsulate. It also aims to study the effect of the electrospray process parameters on the size and morphology of the capsules. The capsules were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Moreover, the effects of electrospray process parameters on the size were investigated by Taguchi experimental design. FTIR and TGA approved the presence of both PMMA and EC without further reaction. FE-SEM micrograph demonstrated that an appropriate choice of solvents, utilizing an appropriate PMMA:EC ratio and sufficient PMMA concentration are critical factors to produce capsules dominantly with an intact and spherical morphology. Utilizing various flow rates (0.3–0.5 ml/h) and applied voltage (18–26 kV), capsules were obtained with a 600–1000 nm size range. At constantly applied voltages, the increase in flow rate increased the capsule size up to 40% (ANOVA, p ≤ 0.05), while at constant flow rates, the increase in applied voltage reduced the average capsule size by 3.4–26% (ANOVA, p ≤ 0.05). The results from the Taguchi design represented the significance of solution flow rate, applied voltage, and solution concentration. It was shown that the most effective parameter on the size of capsules is flow rate. This research demonstrated that electrospray can be utilized as a convenient method for the preparation of sub-micron PMMA capsules containing EC. Furthermore, the morphology of the capsules is dominated by solvents, PMMA concentration, and PMMA:EC ratio, while the average size of the capsules can be altered by adjusting the flow rate and applied voltage of the electrospray process.

  • curr2vib : Modality Embedding Translation for Broken-Rotor Bar Detection
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Machine Learning and Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases. - Cham : Springer Nature. - 9783031236334 ; , s. 423-437
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recently and due to the advances in sensor technology and Internet-of-Things, the operation of machinery can be monitored, using a higher number of sources and modalities. In this study, we demonstrate that Multi-Modal Translation is capable of transferring knowledge from a modality with higher level of applicability (more usefulness to solve an specific task) but lower level of accessibility (how easy and affordable it is to collect information from this modality) to another one with higher level of accessibility but lower level of applicability. Unlike the fusion of multiple modalities which requires all of the modalities to be available during the deployment stage, our proposed method depends only on the more accessible one; which results in the reduction of the costs regarding instrumentation equipment. The presented case study demonstrates that by the employment of the proposed method we are capable of replacing five acceleration sensors with three current sensors, while the classification accuracy is also increased by more than 1%.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Physics reports. - : Elsevier. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 968, s. 1-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Forward Physics Facility (FPF) is a proposal to create a cavern with the space and infrastructure to support a suite of far-forward experiments at the Large Hadron Collider during the High Luminosity era. Located along the beam collision axis and shielded from the interaction point by at least 100 m of concrete and rock, the FPF will house experiments that will detect particles outside the acceptance of the existing large LHC experiments and will observe rare and exotic processes in an extremely low-background environment. In this work, we summarize the current status of plans for the FPF, including recent progress in civil engineering in identifying promising sites for the FPF and the experiments currently envisioned to realize the FPF's physics potential. We then review the many Standard Model and new physics topics that will be advanced by the FPF, including searches for long-lived particles, probes of dark matter and dark sectors, high-statistics studies of TeV neutrinos of all three flavors, aspects of perturbative and non-perturbative QCD, and high-energy astroparticle physics.

  • DNA methylation associates with survival in non-metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: BMC Cancer. - : BioMed Central. - 1471-2407 .- 1471-2407. ; 19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is the most common subtype among renal cancer and is associated with poor prognosis if metastasized. Up to one third of patients with local disease at diagnosis will develop metastasis after nephrectomy, and there is a need for new molecular markers to identify patients with high risk of tumor progression. In the present study, we performed genome-wide promoter DNA methylation analysis at diagnosis to identify DNA methylation profiles associated with risk for progress.Method: Diagnostic tissue samples from 115 ccRCC patients were analysed by Illumina HumanMethylation450K arrays and methylation status of 155,931 promoter associated CpGs were related to genetic aberrations, gene expression and clinicopathological parameters. Results: The ccRCC samples separated into two clusters (cluster A/B) based on genome-wide promoter methylation status. The samples in these clusters differed in tumor diameter (p < 0.001), TNM stage (p < 0.001), morphological grade (p < 0.001), and patients outcome (5 year cancer specific survival (pCSS5yr) p < 0.001 and cumulative incidence of progress (pCIP5yr) p < 0.001. An integrated genomic and epigenomic analysis in the ccRCCs, revealed significant correlations between the total number of genetic aberrations and total number of hypermethylated CpGs (R = 0.435, p < 0.001), and predicted mitotic age (R = 0.407, p < 0.001). We identified a promoter methylation classifier (PMC) panel consisting of 172 differently methylated CpGs accompanying progress of disease. Classifying non-metastatic patients using the PMC panel showed that PMC high tumors had a worse prognosis compared with the PMC low tumors (pCIP5yr 38% vs. 8%, p = 0.001), which was confirmed in non-metastatic ccRCCs in the publically available TCGA-KIRC dataset (pCIP5yr 39% vs. 16%, p < 0.001).Conclusion: DNA methylation analysis at diagnosis in ccRCC has the potential to improve outcome-prediction in non-metastatic patients at diagnosis.

  • Titanium germanium carbide MAX phase electrocatalysts for supercapacitors and alkaline water electrolysis processes
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Materials Today Chemistry. - : Elsevier BV. - 2468-5194. ; 33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Developing electrochemically active, stable, and low-cost electrocatalysts for electrochemical devices is a significant breakthrough. Accordingly, MAX phases, emerging three-dimensional materials, are considered outstanding candidates due to their excellent electrocatalytic and electrochemical properties. Herein, the titanium germanium carbide (Ti3GeC2) MAX phase with a layered structure manufactured through reactive sintering was regarded as the electrocatalyst. In the current work, the electrocatalytic activity of the Ti3GeC2 was investigated for electrochemical devices. It was observed that adding activated carbon to the Ti3GeC2 enhances the conductivity and active area, leading to an excellent specific capacitance (349 Fg-1) for supercapacitors. Also, the capacitance of Ti3GeC2 was increased by increasing the number of cyclic voltammetry cycles. In another application, Ti3GeC2 showed substantial activity for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions in alkaline media. As a result, the alkaline water electrolysis system using Ti3GeC2 showed the highest current density of 10 mA cm−2 at 1.36 V and outstanding stability over 400 cycles.
