  • Diffusion-Based Time Series Data Imputation for Cloud Failure Prediction at Microsoft 365
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ESEC/FSE 2023 - Proceedings of the 31st ACM Joint Meeting European Software Engineering Conference and Symposium on the Foundations of Software Engineering. - : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). ; , s. 2050-2055
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ensuring reliability in large-scale cloud systems like Microsoft 365 is crucial. Cloud failures, such as disk and node failure, threaten service reliability, causing service interruptions and financial loss. Existing works focus on failure prediction and proactively taking action before failures happen. However, they suffer from poor data quality, like data missing in model training and prediction, which limits performance. In this paper, we focus on enhancing data quality through data imputation by the proposed Diffusion+, a sample-efficient diffusion model, to impute the missing data efficiently conditioned on the observed data. Experiments with industrial datasets and application practice show that our model contributes to improving the performance of downstream failure prediction.

  • Chromosome-level genome assembly of a parent species of widely cultivated azaleas
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 2041-1723. ; 11:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Azaleas (Ericaceae) comprise one of the most diverse ornamental plants, renowned for their cultural and economic importance. We present a chromosome-scale genome assembly for Rhododendron simsii, the primary ancestor of azalea cultivars. Genome analyses unveil the remnants of an ancient whole-genome duplication preceding the radiation of most Ericaceae, likely contributing to the genomic architecture of flowering time. Small-scale gene duplications contribute to the expansion of gene families involved in azalea pigment biosynthesis. We reconstruct entire metabolic pathways for anthocyanins and carotenoids and their potential regulatory networks by detailed analysis of time-ordered gene co-expression networks. MYB, bHLH, and WD40 transcription factors may collectively regulate anthocyanin accumulation in R. simsii, particularly at the initial stages of flower coloration, and with WRKY transcription factors controlling progressive flower coloring at later stages. This work provides a cornerstone for understanding the underlying genetics governing flower timing and coloration and could accelerate selective breeding in azalea. Azaleas are one of the most diverse ornamental plants and have cultural and economic importance. Here, the authors report a chromosome-scale genome assembly for the primary ancestor of the azalea cultivar Rhododendro simsi and identify transcription factors that may function in flower coloration at different stages.

  • Small-molecule inhibitors suppress the expression of both type III secretion and amylovoran biosynthesis genes in Erwinia amylovora
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Molecular plant pathology. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 1464-6722 .- 1364-3703. ; 15:1, s. 44-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The type III secretion system (T3SS) and exopolysaccharide (EPS) amylovoran are two essential pathogenicity factors in Erwinia amylovora, the causal agent of the serious bacterial disease fire blight. In this study, small molecules that inhibit T3SS gene expression in E.amylovora under hrp (hypersensitive response and pathogenicity)-inducing conditions were identified and characterized using green fluorescent protein (GFP) as a reporter. These compounds belong to salicylidene acylhydrazides and also inhibit amylovoran production. Microarray analysis of E.amylovora treated with compounds 3 and 9 identified a total of 588 significantly differentially expressed genes. Among them, 95 and 78 genes were activated and suppressed by both compounds, respectively, when compared with the dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) control. The expression of the majority of T3SS genes in E.amylovora, including hrpL and the avrRpt2 effector gene, was suppressed by both compounds. Compound 3 also suppressed the expression of amylovoran precursor and biosynthesis genes. However, both compounds induced significantly the expression of glycogen biosynthesis genes and siderophore biosynthesis, regulatory and transport genes. Furthermore, many membrane, lipoprotein and exported protein-encoding genes were also activated by both compounds. Similar expression patterns were observed for compounds 1, 2 and 4. Using crab apple flower as a model, compound 3 was capable of reducing disease development in pistils. These results suggest a common inhibition mechanism shared by salicylidene acylhydrazides and indicate that small-molecule inhibitors that disable T3SS function could be explored to control fire blight disease.

  • The spatial distribution of precipitation over the West Qinling region, China, AD 1470–2000
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0031-0182 .- 1872-616X. ; 443, s. 278-285
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The West Qinling Mountains form part of the climatic barrier that separates southern and northern China, and are located at the edge of the region dominated by the Asian summer monsoon. To investigate the spatial distribution of regional hydroclimatic variability in the West Qinling region, the annually resolved spatial field of rainy season (May–June–July–August–September, MJJAS) precipitation anomalies from AD 1470 to 2000 was reconstructed using 39 tree-ring chronologies, as well as 28 dryness/wetness indices derived from historical documentary data. The results indicate that the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Tropospheric Biennial Oscillation (TBO) may jointly affect the spatial pattern of precipitation over the West Qinling Mountains at inter-annual timescales. The drought in the 1990s was found to exceed the amplitude and duration of all other periods of drought that have occurred since AD 1470 in this region. The new precipitation field reconstruction assesses the spatial pattern of historical hydroclimatic variability in the West Qinling region and provides an opportunity to test the performance of climate models in simulating regional precipitation variability and change.

  • An Agent-based Model Study on Subsidy Fraud in Technological Transition
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: ICAART: Proceedings Of The 14Th International Conference On Agents And Artificial Intelligence - Vol 1. - : INSTICC. ; , s. 353-358
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The evolution of a society is inextricably linked to technological transition, which is based on both innovation and dissemination of technologies. To protect the vulnerable new generation of technology, government subsidies are one of the most common and effective tools. However, not all subsidy policies can lead to a healthy development of market shares. Subsidy fraud is one of the most problematic issues that can arise under an imperfect system. This paper identifies an interesting subsidy fraud like phenomenon via a validated agent-based model. After analysing the mechanism of the transition of technology in the model, we drive the condition upon which subsidy fraud could occur.

  • BrainIoT : Brain-Like Productive Services Provisioning with Federated Learning in Industrial IoT
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE Internet of Things Journal. - : IEEE. - 2327-4662. ; 9:3, s. 2014-2024
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) accommodates a huge number of heterogeneous devices to bring vast services under a distributed computing scenarios. Most productive services in IIoT are closely related to production control and require distributed network support with low delay. However, the resource reservation based on gross traffic prediction ignores the importance of productive services and treats them as ordinary services, so it is difficult to provide stable low delay support for large amounts of productive service requests. For many productions, unexpected communication delays are unacceptable, and the delay may lead to serious production accidents causing great losses, especially when the productive service is security related. In this article, we propose a brain-like productive service provisioning scheme with federated learning (BrainIoT) for IIoT. The BrainIoT scheme is composed of three algorithms, including industrial knowledge graph-based relation mining, federated learning-based service prediction, and globally optimized resource reservation. BrainIoT combines production information into network optimization, and utilizes the interfactory and intrafactory relations to enhance the accuracy of service prediction. The globally optimized resource reservation algorithm suitably reserves resources for predicted services considering various resources. The numerical results show that the BrainIoT scheme utilizes interfactory relation and intrafactory relation to make an accurate service prediction, which achieves 96% accuracy, and improves the quality of service.

  • Data-Driven Stochastic Scheduling for Energy Integrated Systems
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Energies. - : MDPI. - 1996-1073. ; 12:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As the penetration of intermittent renewable energy increases and unexpected market behaviors continue to occur, new challenges arise for system operators to ensure cost effectiveness while maintaining system reliability under uncertainties. To systematically address these uncertainties and challenges, innovative advanced methods and approaches are needed. Motivated by these, in this paper, we consider an energy integrated system with renewable energy and pumped-storage units involved. In addition, we propose a data-driven risk-averse two-stage stochastic model that considers the features of forbidden zones and dynamic ramping rate limits. This model minimizes the total cost against the worst-case distribution in the confidence set built for an unknown distribution and constructed based on data. Our numerical experiments show how pumped-storage units contribute to the system, how inclusions of the aforementioned two features improve the reliability of the system, and how our proposed data-driven model converges to a risk-neutral model with historical data.

  • Heat Transport Compensation in Atmosphere and Ocean over the Past 22,000 Years
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Earth's climate has experienced dramatic changes over the past 22,000 years; however, the total meridional heat transport (MHT) of the climate system remains stable. A 22,000-year-long simulation using an ocean-atmosphere coupled model shows that the changes in atmosphere and ocean MHT are significant but tend to be out of phase in most regions, mitigating the total MHT change, which helps to maintain the stability of the Earth's overall climate. A simple conceptual model is used to understand the compensation mechanism. The simple model can reproduce qualitatively the evolution and compensation features of the MHT over the past 22,000 years. We find that the global energy conservation requires the compensation changes in the atmosphere and ocean heat transports. The degree of compensation is mainly determined by the local climate feedback between surface temperature and net radiation flux at the top of the atmosphere. This study suggests that an internal mechanism may exist in the climate system, which might have played a role in constraining the global climate change over the past 22,000 years.

  • Multicriteria evaluation of discharge simulation in Dynamic Global Vegetation Models
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres. - 2169-8996. ; 120:15, s. 7488-7505
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, we assessed the performance of discharge simulations by coupling the runoff from seven Dynamic Global Vegetation Models (DGVMs; LPJ, ORCHIDEE, Sheffield-DGVM, TRIFFID, LPJ-GUESS, CLM4CN, and OCN) to one river routing model for 16 large river basins. The results show that the seasonal cycle of river discharge is generally modeled well in the low and middle latitudes but not in the high latitudes, where the peak discharge (due to snow and ice melting) is underestimated. For the annual mean discharge, the DGVMs chained with the routing model show an underestimation. Furthermore, the 30year trend of discharge is also underestimated. For the interannual variability of discharge, a skill score based on overlapping of probability density functions (PDFs) suggests that most models correctly reproduce the observed variability (correlation coefficient higher than 0.5; i.e., models account for 50% of observed interannual variability) except for the Lena, Yenisei, Yukon, and the Congo river basins. In addition, we compared the simulated runoff from different simulations where models were forced with either fixed or varying land use. This suggests that both seasonal and annual mean runoff has been little affected by land use change but that the trend itself of runoff is sensitive to land use change. None of the models when considered individually show significantly better performances than any other and in all basins. This suggests that based on current modeling capability, a regional-weighted average of multimodel ensemble projections might be appropriate to reduce the bias in future projection of global river discharge.

  • ELS algorithm for estimating open source software reliability with masked data considering both fault detection and correction processes
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Communications in Statistics - Theory and Methods. - : Taylor & francis. - 0361-0926 .- 1532-415X. ; 51:19, s. 6792-6817
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Masked data are the system failure data when the exact cause of the failures might be unknown. That is, the cause of the system failures may be any one of the components. Additionally, to incorporate more information and provide more accurate analysis, modeling software fault detection and correction processes have attracted widespread research attention recently. However, stochastic fault correction time and masked data brings more difficulties in parameter estimation. In this paper, a framework of open source software growth reliability model with masked data considering both fault detection and correction processes is proposed. Furthermore, a novel Expectation Least Squares (ELS) method, an EM-like (Expectation Maximization) algorithm, is used to solve the problem of parameter estimation, because of its mathematical convenience and computational efficiency. It is note that the ELS procedure is easy to use and useful for practical applications, and it just needs more relaxed hidden assumptions. Finally, three data sets from real open source software project are applied to the proposed framework, and the results show that the proposed reliability model is useful and powerful.
