  • Electronic transport properties of molecular bipyridine junctions : Effects of isomer and contact structures
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 73:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effects of contact structures and isomers on the current-voltage characteristics of molecular bipyridine junctions have been investigated by means of a generalized quantum chemical approach based on the elastic scattering Green's function method. For the four isomers 4,4'-bipyridine, 2,2'-bipyridine, 2,4'-bipyridine, and 2,6'-bipyridine under investigation, the 2,4'- bipyridine junction is found to be the poorest conductor owing to its nonsymmetrical arrangement. Numerical simulations of the 4,4'-bipyridine junction show that the contact structures between molecule and metallic electrodes have a noticeable effect on the electron transport characteristics of molecular junctions. The shortening of the distance between two metallic electrodes results in a stronger coupling and lower potential barrier between them, leading to larger conductance. The external electric fields cause the charge redistribution within molecule and lead to the presence of resistivity dipoles at the molecule-metal interface, and the bias voltages are mainly dropped there. The nonlinear charge transport effect on the current and conductance of 4,4'-bipyridine molecular junctions at the lower-bias region is presented. The experimental measurement has been reproduced by the theoretical calculations for a well-defined structure.

  • Theoretical studies on electronic transport properties of six-membered heterocyclic molecules
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Wuli xuebao. - : Acta Physica Sinica, Chinese Physical Society and Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. - 1000-3290. ; 55:4, s. 1974-1978
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By applying the elastic scattering Green's function theory in combination with the hybrid density function theory, the electronic transport properties of molecular junctions constructed by the six-membered heterocyclic molecules, pyridazine-2, 5-dithiol, pyrazine-2, 5-dithiol, and pyrimidine-2, 5-dithiol, have been studied. For the heterocyclic molecule pyridine, the influence of the terminal atoms on the current-voltage characteristics has also been obtained. We have accurately determined the coupling constant between the molecule and electrodes by using the frontier molecular orbital theory and the perturbation method. The numerical results show that pyridazine-2,5-dithiol has higher current and conductance, while the conductance of pyrimidine-2, 5-dithiol is very small when the bias voltage is lower than 4V. The conductivity of the molecule pyridine with selenium atom as the terminal atom is higher than that with oxygen atom or sulfur atom.

  • TOI-1442 b and TOI-2445 b: Two potentially rocky ultra-short period planets around M dwarfs
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 673
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context. Exoplanets with orbital periods of less than one day are known as ultra-short period (USP) planets. They are relatively rare products of planetary formation and evolution processes, but especially favourable for characterisation with current planet detection methods. At the time of writing, 125 USP planets have already been confirmed. Aims. Our aim is to validate the planetary nature of two new transiting planet candidates around M dwarfs announced by the NASA Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), registered as TESS Objects of Interest (TOIs) TOI-1442.01 and TOI-2445.01. Methods. We used TESS data, ground-based photometric light curves, and Subaru/IRD spectrograph radial velocity (RV) measurements to validate both planetary candidates and to establish their physical properties. Results. TOI-1442 b is a validated exoplanet with an orbital period of P = 0.4090682 ± 0.0000004 day, a radius of Rp = 1.15 ± 0.06 R☉, and equilibrium temperature of Tp,eq = 1357+−4942 K. TOI-2445 b is also validated with an orbital period of P = 0.3711286 ± 0.0000004 day, a radius of Rp = 1.33 ± 0.09 R☉, and equilibrium temperature of Tp,eq = 1330+−6156 K. Their physical properties align with current empirical trends and formation theories of USP planets. Based on the RV measurements, we set 3σ upper mass limits of 8 M☉ and 20 M☉, thus confirming the non-stellar, sub-Jovian nature of both transiting objects. More RV measurements will be needed to constrain the planetary masses and mean densities, and the predicted presence of outer planetary companions. These targets extend the small sample of USP planets orbiting around M dwarfs up to 21 members. They are also among the 20 most suitable terrestrial planets for atmospheric characterisation via secondary eclipse with the James Webb Space Telescope, according to a widespread emission spectroscopy metric.

  • Edge AI in Smart Farming IoT : CNNs at the Edge and Fog Computing with LoRa
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE AFRICON Conference. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The agricultural and farming industries have been widely influenced by the disruption of the Internet of Things. The impact of the IoT is more limited in countries with less penetration of mobile internet such as sub-Saharan countries, where agriculture commonly accounts for 10 to 50% of their GPD. The boom of low-power wide-area networks (LPWAN) in the last decade, with technologies such as LoRa or NB-IoT, has mitigated this providing a relatively cheap infrastructure that enables low-power and long-range transmissions. Nonetheless, the benefits that LPWAN technologies enable have the disadvantage of low-bandwidth transmissions. Therefore, the integration of Edge and Fog computing, moving data analytics and compression near end devices, is key in order to extend functionality. By integrating artificial intelligence at the local network layer, or Edge AI, we present a system architecture and implementation that expands the possibilities of smart agriculture and farming applications with Edge and Fog computing and LPWAN technology for large area coverage. We propose and implement a system consisting on a sensor node, an Edge gateway, LoRa repeaters, Fog gateway, cloud servers and end-user terminal application. At the Edge layer, we propose the implementation of a CNN-based image compression method in order to send in a single message information about hundreds or thousands of sensor nodes within the gateway's range. We use advanced compression techniques to reduce the size of data up to 67% with a decompression error below 5%, within a novel scheme for IoT data.

  • An ancestral 10-bp repeat expansion in VWA1 causes recessive hereditary motor neuropathy
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Brain : a journal of neurology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0006-8950 .- 1460-2156. ; 144, s. 584-600
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The extracellular matrix comprises a network of macromolecules such as collagens, proteoglycans and glycoproteins. VWA1 (von Willebrand factor A domain containing 1) encodes a component of the extracellular matrix that interacts with perlecan/collagen VI, appears to be involved in stabilizing extracellular matrix structures, and demonstrates high expression levels in tibial nerve. Vwa1-deficient mice manifest with abnormal peripheral nerve structure/function; however, VWA1 variants have not previously been associated with human disease. By interrogating the genome sequences of 74 180 individuals from the 100K Genomes Project in combination with international gene-matching efforts and targeted sequencing, we identified 17 individuals from 15 families with an autosomal-recessive, non-length dependent, hereditary motor neuropathy and rare biallelic variants in VWA1. A single disease-associated allele p.(G25Rfs*74), a 10-bp repeat expansion, was observed in 14/15 families and was homozygous in 10/15. Given an allele frequency in European populations approaching 1/1000, the seven unrelated homozygote individuals ascertained from the 100K Genomes Project represents a substantial enrichment above expected. Haplotype analysis identified a shared 220 kb region suggesting that this founder mutation arose 47000 years ago. A wide age-range of patients (6-83 years) helped delineate the clinical phenotype over time. The commonest disease presentation in the cohort was an early-onset (mean 2.0 +/- 1.4 years) non-length-dependent axonal hereditary motor neuropathy, confirmed on electrophysiology, which will have to be differentiated from other predominantly or pure motor neuropathies and neuronopathies. Because of slow disease progression, ambulation was largely preserved. Neurophysiology, muscle histopathology, and muscle MRI findings typically revealed clear neurogenic changes with single isolated cases displaying additional myopathic process. We speculate that a few findings of myopathic changes might be secondary to chronic denervation rather than indicating an additional myopathic disease process. Duplex reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and immunoblotting using patient fibroblasts revealed that the founder allele results in partial nonsense mediated decay and an absence of detectable protein. CRISPR and morpholino vwa1 modelling in zebrafish demonstrated reductions in motor neuron axonal growth, synaptic formation in the skeletal muscles and locomotive behaviour. In summary, we estimate that biallelic variants in VWA1 may be responsible for up to 1% of unexplained hereditary motor neuropathy cases in Europeans. The detailed clinical characterization provided here will facilitate targeted testing on suitable patient cohorts. This novel disease gene may have previously evaded detection because of high GC content, consequential low coverage and computational difficulties associated with robustly detecting repeat-expansions. Reviewing previously unsolved exomes using lower QC filters may generate further diagnoses.

  • Detecting Water Reflection Symmetries in Point Clouds for Camera Position Calibration in Unmanned Surface Vehicles
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. ; , s. 507-512
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development of autonomous vehicles has seen considerable advances over the past decade. However, specific challenges remain in the area of autonomous waterborne navigation. Two key aspects in autonomous surface vehicles are sensor calibration and segmentation of water surface. Cameras and other sensors in a car or drone can be installed accurately in a specific position and orientation. In a large vessel, this is not always possible, as sensors might be installed around the vessel or on masts. Taking advantage of the medium in which these vehicles operate, the water plane can be used as a reference for different sensors to calibrate their orientation. This allows more accurate localization of obstacles of objects. State-of-the-art deep learning techniques have been successfully applied for water surface segmentation in open sea. However, in other environments such as small rivers or lakes with still waters, a different approach might enable more accurate water surface estimation. We propose a method to estimate the water plane based on the detection of local symmetry planes that naturally occur when objects are reflected in the water. By using a point cloud generated with a stereo camera, we are able to accurately estimate the water level and, at the same time, calibrate the camera position and improve the localization of obstacles. We assume that an approximate position and orientation of the camera is known with respect to the sea level. We demonstrate the efficiency of our method with data obtained in the Aura river, Finland, with our prototype vessel facing both the riverside and the center of the river.

  • Edge Computing for Mobile Robots : Multi-Robot Feature-Based Lidar Odometry with FPGAs
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 12th International Conference on Mobile Computing and Ubiquitous Network, ICMU 2019. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Offloading computationally intensive tasks such as lidar or visual odometry from mobile robots has multiple benefits. Resource constrained robots can make use of their network capabilities to reduce the data processing load and be able to perform a larger number tasks in a more efficient manner. However, previous works have mostly focused on cloud offloading, which increases latency and reduces reliability, or high-end edge devices. Instead, we explore the utilization of FPGAs at the edge for computational offloading with minimal latency and high parallelism. We present the potential for modelling feature-based odometry in VHDL and utilizing FPGA implementations.

  • Electron impact excitation for He-like ions with Z = 20-42
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 600
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims. Spectral lines of He-like ions are among the most prominent features in X-ray spectra from a large variety of astrophysical and high-temperature fusion plasmas. A reliable plasma modeling and interpretation of the spectra require a large amount of accurate atomic data related to various physical processes. In this paper, we focus on the electron-impact excitation (EIE) process. Methods. We adopted the independent process and isolated resonances approximation using distorted waves (IPIRDW). Resonant stabilizing transitions and decays to lower-lying autoionizing levels from the resonances are included as radiative damping. To verify the applicability of the IPIRDW approximation, an independent Dirac R-matrix calculation was also performed. The two sets of results show excellent agreement. Results. We report electron impact excitation collision strengths for transitions among the lowest 49 levels of the 1snl(n ≤ 5; l ≤ (n - 1)) configurations in He-like ions with 20 ≤ Z ≤ 42. The line ratios R and G are calculated for Fe XXV and Kr XXXV. Conclusions. Compared to previous theoretical calculations, our IPIRDWcalculation treats resonance excitation and radiative damping effects more comprehensively, and the resulting line emission cross sections show good agreement with the experimental observations. Our results should facilitate the modeling and diagnostics of various astrophysical and laboratory plasmas.
