  • Sample solution constraints on motor-driven diagnostic nanodevices
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Lab on a Chip. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1473-0197 .- 1473-0189. ; 13:5, s. 866-876
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The last decade has seen appreciable advancements in efforts towards increased portability of lab-on-a-chip devices by substituting microfluidics with molecular motor-based transportation. As of now, first proof-of-principle devices have analyzed protein mixtures of low complexity, such as target protein molecules in buffer solutions optimized for molecular motor performance. However, in a diagnostic workup, lab-on-a-chip devices need to be compatible with complex biological samples. While it has been shown that such samples do not interfere with crucial steps in molecular diagnostics (for example antibody-antigen recognition), their effect on molecular motors is unknown. This critical and long overlooked issue is addressed here. In particular, we studied the effects of blood, cell lysates and solutions containing genomic DNA extracts on actomyosin and kinesin-microtubule-based transport, the two biomolecular motor systems that are most promising for lab-on-a-chip applications. We found that motor function is well preserved at defined dilutions of most of the investigated biological samples and demonstrated a molecular motor-driven label-free blood type test. Our results support the feasibility of molecular-motor driven nanodevices for diagnostic point-of-care applications and also demonstrate important constraints imposed by sample composition and device design that apply both to kinesin-microtubule and actomyosin driven applications.

  • Towards the application of cytoskeletal motor proteins in molecular detection and diagnostic devices
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Current Opinion in Biotechnology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0958-1669 .- 1879-0429. ; 21:4, s. 477-488
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the past ten years, great advancements have been made towards using biomolecular motors for nanotechnological applications. In particular, devices using cytoskeletal motor proteins for molecular transport are maturing. First efforts towards designing such devices used motor proteins attached to micro-structured substrates for the directed transport of microtubules and actin filaments. Soon thereafter, the specific capture, transport and detection of target analytes like viruses were demonstrated. Recently, spatial guiding of the gliding filaments was added to increase the sensitivity of detection and allow parallelization. Whereas molecular motor powered devices have not yet demonstrated performance beyond the level of existing detection techniques, the potential is great: Replacing microfluidics with transport powered by molecular motors allows integration of the energy source (ATP) into the assay solution. This opens up the opportunity to design highly integrated, miniaturized, autonomous detection devices. Such devices, in turn, may allow fast and cheap on-site diagnosis of diseases and detection of environmental pathogens and toxins.

  • An application of a laser drilling technique to fir and spruce wood specimens to improve their permeability
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Innovation in Woodworking Industry and Engineerings Design. - 2367-6663. ; :1, s. 5-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work, the application of a laser drilling technique on fir (Abies borisii regis) and spruce (Picea excelsa) wood and a new approach of improvement the wood permeability is investigated. This technique is focusing on increasing the permeability of wood after surface drilling by a high power laser source. The research was involving the establishment of an effective drilling pattern protocol, which will not substantially affect the mechanical strength of wood and to improve its permeability. All lateral surfaces of the wood specimens, 2 × 2 cm in cross section and 34 cm long, were drilled by laser to a depth of 4 mm (1/5 of specimen thickness) with two drilling patterns (distance between holes 10 × 10 mm and 10 × 20 mm). Preliminary results showed that laser drilling is a promising method for improvement of wood permeability without significant effect on its mechanical strength, and this is very important for an effective treatment of the refractory to impregnation fir and spruce wood.

  • Existential and Spiritual Needs in Mental Health Care : An Ethical and Holistic Perspective
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Holistic Nursing. - Thousand Oaks, CA : Sage Publications. - 0898-0101 .- 1552-5724. ; 27:1, s. 34-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study illuminates how existential needs and spiritual needs are connected with health care ethics and individuals’ mental health and well-being. The term existential needs is defined as the necessity of experiencing life as meaningful, whereas the term spiritual needs is defined as the need of deliverance from despair, guilt and/or sin, and of pastoral care. It discusses whether or not patients’ needs are holistically addressed in Western health care systems that neglect patients’ existential and spiritual needs, because of their biomedical view of Man which recognizes only patients’ physical needs. It excludes a holistic health care which considers all needs, expressed by patients in treatment of mental illness. Addressing all needs is important for patients’ improvement and recovery. For some patients, this is the only way to regain their mental health and well-being.

  • Core Competencies in Clinical Neuropsychology as a Training Model in Europe
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Psychology. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 1664-1078. ; 13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The multitude of training models and curricula for the specialty of clinical neuropsychology around the world has led to organized activities to develop a framework of core competencies to ensure sufficient expertise among entry-level professionals in the field. The Standing Committee on Clinical Neuropsychology of the European Federation of Psychologists' Associations is currently working toward developing a specialty certification in clinical neuropsychology to establish a cross-national standard against which to measure levels of equivalency and uniformity in competence and service provision among professionals in the field. Through structured interviews with experts from 28 European countries, we explored potential areas of core competency. Specifically, questions pertained to the perceived importance of a series of foundational, functional, and other competencies, as well as current training standards and practices, and optimal standards. Our findings revealed considerable agreement (about three quarters and above) on academic and clinical training, despite varied actual training requirements currently, with fewer respondents relegating importance to training in teaching, supervision, and research (a little over half), and even fewer to skills related to management, administration, and advocacy (fewer than half). European expert clinical neuropsychologists were in agreement with previous studies (including those conducted in the United States, Australia, and other countries) regarding the importance of sound theoretical and clinical training but management, administrative, and advocacy skills were not central to their perspective of a competent specialist in clinical neuropsychology. Establishing a specialty certificate in clinical neuropsychology based on core competencies may enable mobility of clinical neuropsychologists across Europe, and, perhaps, provide an impetus for countries with limited criteria to reconsider their training requirements and harmonize their standards with others.

  • Scientific support of the fodder production : V.R. Williams All-Russian Fodder Research Institute (WFRI) activity
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: XVI-th International youth Science and Environmental Baltic Region Countries Forum 7–9 October 2019, Gdansk, Poland. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). ; , s. 1-7
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is well known that the production of green feed is very important for the cultivation of farm animals. Green food actually plays a major role in feeding dairy animals. This type of feed provides essential nutrients for milk production as well as the health of dairy animals. Recently, more and more questions arise to the ecology of feed, the soils on which they grow. In Russia, the flagship of scientific research in this matter is the V. R. all-Russian Williams feed production research Institute (WFRI). Forage production, as a scientific discipline, is focused on the study of forage agro ecosystems. The article describes the new results of the Institute in the cultivation of environmentally friendly forage crops and seed propagation, production of field feed and pasture management. Results of research of ecological technologies for preservation and use of forages, technologies of grain-fodder production and utilization are resulted.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: The Future of University Education. - London : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783319468945 ; , s. 309-328
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter is based on a study carried out as a narrative collage – a research method aimed at the collection of fictive narratives from a chosen group of social actors concerned with a certain idea or phenomenon (Kostera 2006). The researcher asks respondents to compose a story on a given topic or beginning with a given sentence. I have asked a number of different social actors with various organizational experiences, students, researchers, management practitioners, and artists, from different countries, to write short fictive stories beginning with the phrase: “The big banner by the entrance proclaimed: ‘Happy New Year 2021!’ A group of students entered campus and looked around. Adam spoke first: ‘Don’t know about you, but I…’.” The stories are to be between 1/2 and 3 pages A4, any genre, any plot or plots, wherever imagination takes their authors. They are welcome to invent further characters, add context, place and detail. I read and interpret the stories, looking into the ways in which the authors use or approach characters, plots and archetypes, and in particular the idea of the university as envisaged in the story. The complete process does not offer any general theories or even local models about how reality works; instead, if it is carried out well, it throws new light on a part of the cultural context of organizing located within domain of imagination. Imagination is also a reality, even if it is not material. It has its laws and its rules, and can be regarded as a mental space where innovative and creative thinking can take place, and thus where potential for change originates.
