  • Cardiovascular risk in the metabolic syndrome: fact or fiction?
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Current Cardiology Reports. - 1534-3170. ; 9:6, s. 479-485
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In population-based studies, a cluster of cardiovascular risk factors comprising the metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been documented as predictive of cardiovascular disease events and type 2 diabetes. Currently, there are several proposed definitions of the MetS, although data support some advantages of using the 2005 National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III definition, which is considered superior to most others, including the one from the 2005 International Diabetes Federation study. One controversial issue is that some of the conventional cardiovascular risk factors included in the MetS cluster appear to be equally predictive of cardiovascular outcomes as the syndrome itself (eg, the influence of smoking habits). Further observational and intervention studies are needed to explore this issue and target the core problem of the syndrome, which is proposed to be insulin resistance. Useful therapies for the metabolic syndrome include lifestyle modification and drugs that lower conventional cardiovascular risk factors, such as metformin, the "glitazones," and evidence-based drugs.

  • Chip and solution detection of DNA hybridization using a luminescent zwitterionic polythiophene derivative
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Nature Materials. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-1122 .- 1476-4660. ; 2:6, s. 419-424
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electronic polymers in aqueous media may offer bioelectronic detection of biospecific interactions. Here we report a fluorometric DNA hybridization detection method based on non-covalent coupling of DNA to a water-soluble zwitterionic polythiophene derivative. Introduction of a single-stranded oligonucleotide will induce a planar polymer and aggregation of the polymer chains, detected as a decrease of the intensity and a red-shift of the fluorescence. On addition of a complementary oligonucleotide, the intensity of the emitted light is increased and blue-shifted. The detection limit of this method is at present ~10−11 moles. The method is highly sequence specific, and a single-nucleotide mismatch can be detected within five minutes without using any denaturation steps. The interaction with DNA and the optical phenomena persists when the polymer is deposited and patterned on a surface. This offers a novel way to create DNA chips without using covalent attachment of the receptor or labelling of the analyte.

  • CMOS on-chip clock for digital signal processors
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Electronics Letters. - Stevenage, UK : IET. - 0013-5194 .- 1350-911X. ; 15:8, s. 669-670
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An on-chip clock for frequencies up to 190 MHz is presented. This clock generator can be used for application specific digital signal processors which are clocked faster than the off-chip system clock. It is useful for both processors with a few cycles per sample or for high frequency bit-serial processors which need a large number of cycles.

  • Compassion - a resource or threat for the professional social worker?
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The 2011 Joint Nordic Conference on Welfare and professionalism in Turbulent Times. - Reykjavik.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • What is the proper place of compassion within social work? Should social workers feel compassion for their clients, or is this something that should be avoided? Opinions differ. While some have claimed that compassion should be avoided in favor of a more detached and professional approach, others argue that compassion is an important, and unavoidable part, of a proper working-alliance. While some claim that compassion can be beneficial for the client, recent studies have suggested that too much compassion can lead to so-called compassion fatigue and be detrimental for the professional. If we want to assess these claims, we must first consider what compassion is. That is the purpose of this study. The aim is to gain a better understanding of what compassion is, with a special eye to the question as to whether compassion is a resource or threat within professional social work. Methods include conceptual analysis and phenomenological descriptions of compassion and related phenomena. The results can be summarized in two main claims. The first is that compassion is a particular kind of suffering directed towards the suffering of someone. What is special about compassion is that it is a suffering for another person’s sake: When you feel compassion (and only compassion) for another person, then you suffer over her suffering for her sake and not your own sake. The second claim is that compassion in and of itself is not harmful to the person feeling it. Although compassion consists in suffering, since it is a suffering for another person’s sake, a person feeling compassion is not, and does not take herself to be, the victim of something bad. It is an essential feature of compassion that if you feel compassion (and only compassion) for another person, then you take this person to be the victim of a harm but you do not take yourself to be so. In conclusion it is argued that these results point towards a more positive view of compassion and its place within social work.

  • Complexity reductions in unrolled CORDIC architectures
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: 16th IEEE International Conference on Electronics, Circuits and Systems - (ICECS 2009). - 9781424450909
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper shows a novel methodology to reduce the complexity in unrolled CORDIC architectures. The methodology is based on eliminating the CORDIC stages starting from the first stage. As an example, a six stage CORDIC is used but the methodology is applicable on CORDICs with an arbitrary number of stages. The paper shows that the complexity can be reduced by 25%.
