  • Enhancing the synchronizability of scale-free networks by adding edges
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Modern Physics C. - 0129-1831. ; 21:1, s. 67-77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To efficiently enhance the synchronizability of a scale-free network by adding some edges, we numerically study the effect of edge-adding on the spectrum of the network Laplacian matrix. Based on the relation between the largest eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix and the largest degree of the scale-free network, we show that adding a new edge to the node of largest degree will generally weaken the synchronizability of a scale-free network. We consequently propose a method to effectively enhance the network synchronizability by attaching the new edge to a node whose nearest-neighbors have small degrees. The effect of the new method is analyzed and demonstrated with comparisons.

  • Marker-based parentage analysis facilitates low input ‘breeding without breeding’ strategies for forest trees
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Tree Genetics and Genomes. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1614-2942 .- 1614-2950. ; 6:2, s. 227-235
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Controlled crosses and progeny testing are important components of tree breeding programs. Recently, a new approach, ‘breeding without breeding’ (BWB), has been proposed to obtain structured pedigrees for the breeding and testing from wind-pollinated progenies; the technique uses high-resolution markers instead of conventional approaches. The BWB approach is attractive for outcrossing conifers where the breeding cycle is long and reproductive maturity is often delayed. For the application of the BWB approach, the accurate assignment of parents is essential. The first step in the application of the BWB approach is to conduct tests into the reliability of paternity and parent-pair exclusion procedures in complex situations. In this study we conducted multi-locus-based empirical and simulation analyses for a Scots pine seed orchard crop, in order to develop the appropriate parentage assignment techniques for BWB and to investigate whether pedigrees from a seed orchard crop can be determined with sufficient accuracy. The results were promising, as 93–97% of the seeds generated by mating among the seed orchard clones were correctly assigned to a parent-pair. When mating occurred with foreign pollen, the success rate of identifying mother clones was 60–78%. Based on these results, we propose three novel low input breeding strategies for forest trees. The principles of the different options and their potential benefits and costs are described and discussed using Scots pine as a case study.

  • Determining individual mineral contributions to U(VI) adsorption in a contaminated aquifer sediment : a fluorescence spectroscopy study
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta. - : Elsevier BV. - 0016-7037 .- 1872-9533. ; 75:10, s. 2965-2979
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The adsorption and speciation of U(VI) was investigated on contaminated, fine grained sediment materials from the Hanford 300 area (SPP1 GWF) in simulated groundwater using cryogenic laser-induced U(VI) fluorescence spectroscopy combined with chemometric analysis. A series of reference minerals (montmorillonite, illite, Michigan chlorite, North Carolina chlorite, California clinochlore, quartz and synthetic 6-line ferrihydrite) was used for comparison that represents the mineralogical constituents of SPP1 GWF. Surface area-normalized Kd values were measured at U(VI) concentrations of 5 × 10−7 and 5 × 10−6 mol L−1 that displayed the following affinity series: 6-line-ferrihydrite > North Carolina chlorite ≈ California clinochlore > quartz ≈ Michigan chlorite > illite > montmorillonite. Both time-resolved spectra and asynchronous two-dimensional (2D) correlation analysis of SPP1 GWF at different delay times indicated that two major adsorbed U(VI) species were present in the sediment that resembled U(VI) adsorbed on quartz and phyllosilicates. Simulations of the normalized fluorescence spectra confirmed that the speciation of SPP1 GWF was best represented by a linear combination of U(VI) adsorbed on quartz (90%) and phyllosilicates (10%). However, the fluorescence quantum yield for U(VI) adsorbed on phyllosilicates was lower than quartz and, consequently, its fractional contribution to speciation may be underestimated. Spectral comparison with literature data suggested that U(VI) exist primarily as inner-sphere complexes with surface silanol groups on quartz and as surface U(VI) tricarbonate complexes on phyllosilicates.

    • Heligt – Hotfullt – Historiskt: Kulturarvifieringen av det katolska i 1600-talets SverigeHelena Wangefelt StrömAbstractThis article aims at bringing together two concepts with many similarities, heritage and sacredness, using theories presently under construction in an international and interdisciplinary research field dealing with heritage production, politics and power. Focus is on the process and the agenda more than the product, and particularly on the transvaluation taking place when something is given a heritage status: the form is intact, but the content is new and different. These theories are applied on a 17th century Swedish national inquiry for historical remains or ”antiquities”, ordered by the King and performed by the local clergy, an inquiry where not only the expected and specifically requested runic stones, pre-historic graves or famous battle fields were listed, but in many cases also far more recent Catholic items and memories, thus transformed from sacred objects to a part of the national heritage. The hypothesis presented and argued for is that this listing and, in fact, heritage production also worked as an act of control and domestication of the potentially dangerous: the threatening, former sacred, was made harmless when – literally or figuratively – locked up in a museum case.

  • Meteor head echo polarization at 930MHz studied with the EISCATUHF HPLA radar
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Annales Geophysicae. - : European Geosciences Union (EGU). - 0992-7689 .- 1432-0576. ; 29, s. 1197-1208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The polarization characteristics of 930-MHz meteor head echoes have been studied for the first time, using data obtained in a series of radar measurements carried out with the tristatic EISCAT UHF high power, large aperture (HPLA) radar system in October 2009. An analysis of 44 tri-static head echo events shows that the polarization of the echo signal recorded by the Kiruna receiver often fluctuates strongly on time scales of tens of microseconds, illustrating that the scattering process is essentially stochastic. On longer timescales (> milliseconds), more than 90% of the recorded events show an average polarization signature that is independentof meteor direction of arrival and echo strength and equal to that of an incoherent-scatter return from underdense plasma filling the tristatic observation volume. This shows that the head echo plasma targets scatter isotropically, which in turn implies that they are much smaller than the 33-cm wavelength and close to spherically symmetric, in very good agreement with results from a previous EISCAT UHF study of the head echo RCS/meteor angle-of-incidence relationship. Significant polarization is present in only three events withunique target trajectories. These all show a larger effective target cross section transverse to the trajectory than parallelto it. We propose that the observed polarization may be a signature of a transverse charge separation plasma resonance in the region immediately behind the meteor head, similar to the resonance effects previously discussed in connection with meteor trail echoes by Herlofson, Billam and Browne, Jones and Jones and others.

  • Biomarkers of milk fat and the risk of myocardial infarction in men and women : a prospective, matched case-control study
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. - : Elsevier BV. - 0002-9165 .- 1938-3207. ; 92:1, s. 194-202
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: High intakes of saturated fat have been associated with cardiovascular disease, and milk fat is rich in saturated fat. Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the association between the serum milk fat biomarkers pentadecanoic acid (15:0), heptadecanoic acid (17:0), and their sum (15:0+17:0) and a first myocardial infarction (MI). Design: The study design was a prospective case-control study nested within a large population- based cohort in Sweden. Included in the study were 444 cases (307 men) and 556 controls (308 men) matched on sex, age, date of examination, and geographic region. Clinical, anthropometric, biomarker fatty acid, physical activity, and dietary data were collected. The odds of a first MI were investigated by using conditional logistic regression. Results: In women, proportions of milk fat biomarkers in plasma phospholipids were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in controls than in cases and were, in general, negatively, albeit weakly, correlated with risk factors for metabolic syndrome. The crude standardized odds ratios of becoming an MI case were 0.74 (95% CI: 0.58, 0.94) in women and 0.91 (95% CI: 0.77, 1.1) in men. After multivariable adjustment for confounders, the inverse association remained in both sexes and was significant in women. In agreement with biomarker data, quartiles of reported intake of cheese (men and women) and fermented milk products (men) were inversely related to a first MI (P for trend < 0.05 for all). Conclusions: Milk fat biomarkers were associated with a lower risk of developing a first MI, especially in women. This was partly confirmed in analysis of fermented milk and cheese intake. Components of metabolic syndrome were observed as potential intermediates for the risk relations. Am J Clin Nutr 2010; 92:194-202.
