    • To accelerate level-set based abdominal aorta segmentation on CTA data, we propose a periodic monotonic speed function, which allows segments of the contour to expand within one period and to shrink in the next period, i.e., coherent propagation. This strategy avoids the contour’s local wiggling behavior which often occurs during the propagating when certain points move faster than the neighbors, as the curvature force will move them backwards even though the whole neighborhood will eventually move forwards. Using coherent propagation, these faster points will, instead, stay in their places waiting for their neighbors to catch up. A period ends when all the expanding/shrinking segments can no longer expand/shrink, which means that they have reached the border of the vessel or stopped by the curvature force. Coherent propagation also allows us to implement a modified narrow band level set algorithm that prevents the endless computation in points that have reached the vessel border. As these points’ expanding/shrinking trend changes just after several iterations, the computation in the remaining iterations of one period can focus on the actually growing parts. Finally, a new convergence detection method is used to permanently stop updating the local level set function when the 0-level set is stationary in a voxel for several periods. The segmentation stops naturally when all points on the contour are stationary. In our preliminary experiments, significant speedup (about 10 times) was achieved on 3D data with almost no loss of segmentation accuracy.

  • Making the PACS workstation a browser of image processing software : a feasibility study using inter-process communication techniques

    • PURPOSE: To enhance the functional expandability of a picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) workstation and to facilitate the integration of third-part image-processing modules, we propose a browser-server style method. METHODS: In the proposed solution, the PACS workstation shows the front-end user interface defined in an XML file while the image processing software is running in the background as a server. Inter-process communication (IPC) techniques allow an efficient exchange of image data, parameters, and user input between the PACS workstation and stand-alone image-processing software. Using a predefined communication protocol, the PACS workstation developer or image processing software developer does not need detailed information about the other system, but will still be able to achieve seamless integration between the two systems and the IPC procedure is totally transparent to the final user. RESULTS: A browser-server style solution was built between OsiriX (PACS workstation software) and MeVisLab (Image-Processing Software). Ten example image-processing modules were easily added to OsiriX by converting existing MeVisLab image processing networks. Image data transfer using shared memory added <10ms of processing time while the other IPC methods cost 1-5 s in our experiments. CONCLUSION: The browser-server style communication based on IPC techniques is an appealing method that allows PACS workstation developers and image processing software developers to cooperate while focusing on different interests.

    • Homogeneous microstructure control in the SPS (spark plasma sintering) sintered big size Al2O3 ceramic was realized by the synergy effect of grain boundary tailoring and proper pressure profile design. Two-step pressure profile itself did not show any efficient densification enhancement if no grain boundary modifier MgO added. The two-step pressure profile can effectively reduce average grain size and grain size difference over the sintered specimen, while MgO doping can reduce the average grain size in the whole sintered samples. Finally, a general strategy to overcome the intrinsic temperature gradient in SPS is suggested.

    • We study the degrees of freedom (DOF) of a single-antenna M-user time-varying parallel relay network, where the communications between M pairs of unconnected sources and destinations are provided by a large number of half-duplex decode-and-forward (DF) relays. Unlike the conventional relaying strategy which demands all the relays to simultaneously assist the sources, we divide the relays into two clusters and permit them to take turns forwarding the source messages. With appropriate interference alignment design, it is proved that the M-user time-varying relay network has M DOF, provided that the number of relays is infinitely large.

  • Preferential Association of Interferon Regulatory Factor 5 Gene Variants with Seronegative Rheumatoid Arthritis in 2 Swedish Case-Control Studies

    • Objective.Two interferon regulatory factor 5 (IRF5) gene variants were examined for association with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).Methods.A total of 2300 patients with RA and 1836 controls were recruited from 2 independent RA studies in Sweden. One insertion-deletion polymorphism (CGGGG indel) and one single-nucleotide polymorphism (rs10488631) in the IRF5 gene were genotyped and analyzed within RA subgroups stratified by rheumatoid factor (RF) and anticitrullinated peptide antibodies (ACPA).Results.The CGGGG indel was preferentially associated with the RF-negative (OR 1.29, p = 7.9 × 10−5) and ACPA-negative (OR 1.27, p = 7.3 × 10−5) RA subgroups compared to the seropositive counterparts. rs10488631 was exclusively associated within the seronegative RA subgroups (RF-negative: OR 1.24, p = 0.016; ACPA-negative: OR 1.27, p = 4.1 × 10−3).Conclusion.Both the CGGGG indel and rs10488631 are relevant for RA susceptibility, especially for seronegative RA.

    • In this paper, a novel cooperative diversity transmission protocol is proposed for a four-node network where a single-antenna source communicates with its intended Nantenna destination with the help of two K-antenna decode-and-forward (DF) relays. Without requiring complex coding strategies at the relays, a sufficiently strong or weak inter-relay channel, or destination-source feedback, the proposed shifted successive DF relaying (SSDFR) protocol asymptotically achieves the optimal diversity-multiplexing tradeoff performance the four-node network can provide.

    • A novel cooperative diversity transmission protocol using two K-antenna decode-and-forward relays to take turns assisting in the communication between a single-antenna source and its intended N-antenna destination is studied. A (1+2?logK?)-bit destination-relay feedback signal is exploited to perform relay/antenna selection. Two different simple forwarding strategies are applied at the relays: one relay uses a superposition-coding strategy while the other relay uses a repetition-coding strategy. When the source's frame length is sufficiently large, the optimal diversity-multiplexing tradeoff of the four-node network can be achieved asymptotically if K = 3.

    • Background: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenously expressed noncoding RNAs with important biological and pathological functions. Although several studies have shown that microRNA-31 (miR-31) is obviously up-regulated in colorectal cancer (CRC), there is no study on the functional roles of miR-31 in CRC. Methods: Anti-miR (TM) miRNA 31 inhibitor (anti-miR-31) is a sequence-specific and chemically modified oligonucleotide to specifically target and knockdown miR-31 molecule. The effect of anti-miR-31 transfection was investigated by real-time PCR. HCT-116(p53+/+) and HCT-116(p53-/-)colon cancer cells were treated by anti-miR-31 with or without 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), cell proliferation was determined by MTT assay; apoptosis was detected by DAPI staining; cell cycle was evaluated by flow cytometry; colony formation, migration and invasion assays were performed to investigate the effect of suppression of miR-31 on the cell lines. Results: Real-time PCR results showed that anti-miR-31 was efficiently introduced into the cells and reduced miR-31 levels to 44.1% in HCT-116(p53+/+) and 67.8% in HCT-116p(53-/-)cell line (p = 0.042 and 0.046). MTT results showed that anti-miR-31 alone had no effect on the proliferation of HCT-116(p53+/+) or HCT-116(p53-/-). However, when combined with 5-FU, anti-miR-31 inhibited the proliferation of the two cell lines as early as 24 h after exposure to 5-FU (p = 0.038 and 0.044). Suppression of miR-31 caused a reduction of the migratory cells by nearly 50% compared with the negative control in both HCT-116(p53+/+) and HCT-116(p53-/-)(p = 0.040 and 0.001). The invasive ability of the cells were increased by 8-fold in HCT-116(p53+/+) and 2-fold in HCT-116(p53-/-)(p = 0.045 and 0.009). Suppression of miR-31 had no effect on cell cycle and colony formation (p andgt; 0.05). Conclusions: Suppression of miR-31 increases sensitivity to 5-FU at an early stage, and affects cell migration and invasion in HCT-116 colon cancer cells.

    • Steel industry is one of energy-intensive industries. Recovery and utilization of waste heat is important for reduction of energy consumption in the steel industry. Waste heat occurs in every plant of iron and steel works in the form of gases, liquid and solid. In this work, the waste heat considered is the flue gases from various process units. The studied steel works is Raahe steelworks (Ruukki), which is a fully integrated steel plant. The major process units to generate flue gases at Ruukki are batteries at coking plant, cowper at iron making plant and heat furnaces at the rolling mill. The flue gas temperatures are in the range of 230 ~ 550 °C, and the flow rates are in the range of 25000 ~ 127000 Nm3/hour at each stack. The potential thermal energy recovered at each unit is calculated. Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technique has been applied for electricity generation from the recovered waste heat. Some economical parameters such as net present value (NPV), Internal return rate (IRR) and pay-back time are presented to show projects' economical feasibility. Sensitivity analysis of some key influence factors, such as equipment cost, electricity price and discount rate, etc. has been made. Furthermore, a concept of optimized use of waste heat from an integrated point of view has been studied, in which the power plant is also covered. Analysis and discussions on how to utilize waste heat to produce steam or electricity towards a more economical solution are presented.
