• Stable lodinated polypeptide hormones prepared by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis
• 1980
• Ingår i: Analytical Biochemistry. - Elsevier. - 0003-2697. ; 107:1, s. 165-176
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Iodination of several insulin and proinsulin preparations, human growth hormone and bovine pancreatic polypeptide was performed using H2O2 and lactoperoxidase or chloramine T. The iodination mixtures were fractionated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis at pH 9.15 in long gel rods followed by simple elution of the iodinated products from thin gel slices. With this method 125I tracers with long shelf life and high specific activity suitable for radioimmunoassays could easily be obtained.

• Resolution, unsharpness and MTF
• 1980
• Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
•
Resolution: The ability of an imaging system to register separate images of two closelysituated objects.

Unsharpness: The ability of an imaging system to reproduce a sharp edge.

The resolving power of the radiological image depends on the combined effect of different kinds of unsharpness (see below), the number of X-ray photons to produce the image and the contrast. In other words, the resolving power depends on the MTF of the imaging system, the quantum noise and the contrast.

The resolution of the imaging system is usually measured using a test object with alternating transparent and absorbing lines. The resolution power is then usually given in line pairs per millimeter (lp/mm), i.e., gives the number of "tops" and "valleys" that can be detected per millimeter.

• Occupational exposure to organic solvents and Hogdkin's disease in man. A case-referent study
• 1980
• Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment and Health. - Finnish Institute of Occupational Health. - 0355-3140. ; 6:4, s. 302-305
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• A standardized personal interview schedule was used to study occupational exposure to organic solvents among 25 men aged 20-65 a with Hodgkin's disease and 50 referents matched for sex, age and residence. When exposure was defined as the handling of organic solvents every workday for at least 1 a within the 10-a period immediately preceding the interview, 12 of the Hodgkin's disease patients (48%) and six referents (12%) were occupationally exposed with a relative risk of 6.6 (p = 0.0005). For 9 of the 12 exposed Hodgkin's disease patients exposure to aromatic solvents was verified, and such exposure may well have occurred for the remaining three patients also. It was concluded that exposure to organic solvents may constitute an occupational risk with regard to Hodgkin's disease.

• Relation between age of mothers with breast cancer and sex of their children
• 1980
• Ingår i: British Medical Journal. - BMJ Publishing Group. - 0959-8146. ; 281:6247, s. 1029-1031
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• In a consecutive series of 150 women with breast cancer 122 had borne one or more children. Sixty-two patients were aged below 55 years at diagnosis (group A) and 60 were 55 years or older (group B). In group A 91 out of 153 children (59%) were boys compared with 48 out of 141 (34%) in group B (p=0 000007). In group A 54 of the 62 patients (87%) had given birth to one or more boys compared with 35 of the 60 (58%) in group B (p=0 0003). The mean age at diagnosis in mothers of two or more boys was 49 0 years, in those of one boy 55-2 years, and in those of only girls 61 0 years. The differences between each of the mean ages was significant. The mean age at diagnosis in 28 nulliparous patients was 57-7 years. There was no significant correlation between the number of female pregnancies and age at diagnosis. These results suggest that in women liable to develop breast cancer male pregnancies are associated with an early onset of the disease. © 1980, British Medical Journal Publishing Group. • Plasma levels of beta-2 microglobulin in rheumatoid arthritis.
• 1980
• Ingår i: Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases. - British Medical Association. - 1468-2060. ; 39:4, s. 333-339
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• A simple and inexpensive method is described for the determination of beta 2-microglobulin (beta 2-MG) by enzyme-amplified single radial immunodiffusion. The values obtained with this method correlate well with those determined by means of a commerical RIA kit. Using the immunodiffusion method we have measured the plasma levels of beta 2-MG in 135 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and normal serum creatinine levels. 33% of the patients had increased concentrations of beta 2 MG, but the levels were found to correlate poorly with the values of several variables generally used as indices of the degree inflammatory activity in RA. Furthermore, in contrast to earlier claims to the contrary, beta 2-MG correlated positively with age. The value of beta 2-MG in plasma as an index of inflammatory activity in RA is questioned.

• Effects of phasic and tonic activation on contraction dynamics in smooth muscle
• 1980
• Ingår i: Acta Physiologica Scandinavica. - Wiley-Blackwell. - 0001-6772. ; 109:4, s. 399-406
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Responses to isotonic quick releases of rabbit urinary bladder strips and rat portal veins activated by AC-stimulation and K+-high medium were studied. The AC stimulation was adjusted to give the same tension as th K+-contractures. Releases were performed at peak of the contractions (which was attained after 1.5-4.5 s AC-stimulation or 2-3 min in K+-high solution). The length response consisted of 3 parts: (1) elastic recoil, (2) isotonic transient, (3) steady shortening. Shortening velocity was determined at 100 ms after the release, as phase (2) had subsided by then. Characteristics of the initial elastic response was virtually unaffected by the mode of stimulation for both preparations. Vmax was significantly higher for the AC-stimulations than for the K+-contractures (bladder: 0.37 l/s vs. 0.26 l/s, portal vein: 0.46 l/s vs. 0.33 l/s). By means of computer analysis a fast exponential shortening component comprising the larger part of phase (2) could be separated from the subsequent slower shortening (see further in Hellstrand & Johansson 1979). In each preparation the amplitude of this exponential was the same for both modes of activation. The time constant was, however, smaller for the AC-stimulation preparations. Our results thus indicate that in response to a sudden decrease in force the initial elastic recoil is the same whereas the rate of transition to steady shortening, and the steady shortening velocity itself, are lower for preparations activated by K+-high medium compared to AC-stimulation.
