  • Transition in men's caring identities : From home-based care to nursing home placement

    • <p>Keywords:</p><ul><li>caring;</li><li>gender;</li><li>informal care;</li><li>nursing home</li></ul><p><strong>Objectives. </strong> The aim of this study is to describe, from a gender identity perspective, the experiences of older men involved in the process of caring for a partner at home and the placement into a nursing home.</p><p><strong>Background. </strong> Few studies have paid attention to the importance of gender when considering the social experiences of older men providing care for an ill spouse and finally placing a partner in a nursing home. Further understanding is much needed of how older men experience the process of caring for a spouse from a gender identity perspective.</p><p><strong>Design. </strong> A qualitative constructivist approach was adopted for this study.</p><p><strong>Participants. </strong> Data consists of interviews with seven men that have been informal carers and experienced the placement of their wife in a nursing home.</p><p><strong>Methods. </strong> Interviews were analysed with a constructivist approach.</p><p><strong>Results. </strong> The results indicate that men go through two transitions in their gender identity during the caregiving process and placement. From the mutual loving relationship of being a <em>loving husband</em>, the social responsibility of daily care of their wives changes the situation into that of being a <em>caring husband</em>, and finally with the move to a nursing home there is a transition from <em>intimate care to a relationship based on friendship</em>.</p><p><strong>Conclusions. </strong> The results show that older caregiving men undergo a process involving a reconstruction of gender identity. To formally recognize men’s caring activities and to make them sustainable, we believe that men in an informal caring relationship need support.</p><p><strong>Relevance to clinical practice. </strong> Nurses need to recognize the identity struggles resulting in sadness and suffering that are related to changes in men’s lives during the caregiving process. Understanding the dynamics and changes that occur when men take on a caring task is important for the development of their role as carers.</p>

    • <p>The aim of the study is to examine how one administration in a school with above average national test results works to reduce student behavior problems and promote a functional environment in one English speaking school in Stockholm, Sweden.</p><p>The methods used are a case study of one school with interviews and a questionnaire. The grades the students received were compared to the national average and the school environment for the students and administration was reviewed.</p><p>The results are based on the relationship between a strong administration and a positive school environment as described by the participants. Finally the interventions realized in that school were contrasted with the interventions outlined and suggested in the current literature.</p><p>The conclusion is that the research done for this study suggests that there is a relationship between a strong administration and children performing well on standardized tests. It also suggests that both the students and the administration, under these circumstances, feel good about school.</p>

  • How Sustainability Leaders Communicate Corporate Activities of Sustainable Development.

    • <p>In the corporate quest for sustainable development, production- and product-related environmental impacts of a company can form a basis for de fining the corporate environmental profile, as well as for de fining environmental leaders. Awareness of the production- and productrelated dimensions of the environmental profile varied among companies. This paper studied descriptions and reporting of environmental issues among 19 companies ranked as Global Supersector Leaders in 2009/2010 by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI). The results show that all of these companies are aware of production- and product-related environmental aspects. There are also examples, both as headings on websites and as sections in sustainability reports, where companies structure their environmental initiatives separately with respect to production (or their own operations) and the product. The paper ends with a proposed modelof corporate environmental profile.</p>

  • Five-year-old Children's Tuning-in and Negotiation Staregies in an Immunization Situation

    • <p>In this article, we have explored 5-year-old children's expressions when they as actors took part in an immunization situation in the Primary Child Health Care (PCHC) service in Sweden. Although children's health and development are the main concern in the PCHC service, their perspectives in such a setting have not been explored fully. To capture children's perspectives we used a hermeneutic design and video observations. The findings revealed children as competent and active participants, contributing to the construction of the PCHC situation in mutuality with the nurse and the parent. The conceptualization of children's expressions and actions revealed how they influenced and dealt with a PCHC situation by using strategies of tuning-in, affirmative negotiation, and delaying negotiation. Understanding children's actions will assist nurses to act with sensitivity when they encounter and support children.</p>

  • Communicating through caregiver singing during morning care situations in dementia care

    • <p>It is well known that persons with dementia (PWD) have problems expressing and interpreting communication, making interaction with others difficult. Interaction between PWD and their caregivers is crucial, and several strategies have been investigated to facilitate communication during caregiving. Music therapeutic caregiving (MTC) - when caregivers sing for or together with PWD during caregiving activities - has been shown to enhance communication for PWD, evoking more vitality and positive emotions. The aim of this study was to describe how PWD and their caregivers express verbal and nonverbal communication and make eye contact during the care activity 'getting dressed', during morning care situations without and with MTC. Findings revealed that during the situations without MTC, the caregivers led the dressing procedure with verbal instructions and body movements and seldom invited the PWD to communicate or participate in getting dressed. Patterns in responses to caregivers' instructions included both active and compliant responses and reactions that were resistant and aggressive, confused, and disruptive. In contrast to the 'ordinary' morning care situation, during MTC, the caregivers seemed interested in communicating with the PWD and solicited their mutual engagement. Although verbal communication consisted of singing about things other than getting dressed, e.g. dancing, love, sailing, God, the PWD mostly responded to caregivers in a composed manner, by being active, compliant, and relaxed, though some were also resistant or incongruent. The authors conclude that MTC could be a way for PWD and their caregivers to successfully interact and co-operate during caring situations, as it seems to evoke enhanced communication for both partners in this context</p>
