  • Invoking Hijab: The Power Politics of Spaces and Employment in Nigeria
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Veiling in Africa / edited by Elisha P. Renne. - Bloomington, Indiana, USA : Indiana University Press. - 9780253008206
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Islamists and other fundamentalists of all religious persuasions in Nigeria are making the female body their last and common stand on faith. Their perspective seeks to script onto the female body a singular sexualised meaning as the contour of the public space. The hijab has in particular come to symbolise this inscription as moral compass and an epitome of a woman’s faith among some Muslims. For some believers this veil is no longer a socially knotty and therefore a discursive attire but an unquestionable act of communion with God. Many women have ‘chosen’ to wear the hijab and vehemently defend its sacrosanctity and their choice in the name of Allah. As an observer of the changing veiling styles, my perception of the hijab and its place in Nigeria is varied and contingent on where, when and who adorns it. However, what is consistent in my mind is the prominent weight of politics of inclusiveness and exclusiveness in the choices women and indeed men make, about the cloth. My hypothesis is that the hijab serves as a symbolic interface of including or excluding women’s voices in exercising/negotiation power in public politics. This article explores specifically the hypothesis that the hijab is a symbol of the discourse of defining the public space in Nigeria and who dictates the terms of access to that space. The analysis is conducted by engaging with one attribute in the plural dimensions of the physical body - as a work implement - in the politics of spaces between the hijab and employment. The paper engages with a simple question addressed to the wearers of the garment: why do you wear the hijab? With the body as a tool for work, the analysis will engage the forms of adorning the hijab between rural/farming women’s wearing practices and urban/middle class wearers and amongst them.

  • Strategic Silences: Theorising Nineteenth Century Slavery and Sexual Desire in the Central Sudan
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Forum on Public Policy Online. - 1938-9809 .- 1938-9809. ; 2015:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper engages the ideology of sexual difference in slavery in the construction of gender inequality in the Central Sudan. Historical studies of Islamic states acknowledge the principles of slavery and concubinage as intrinsic parts of the states. Nineteenth century political leaders and contemporary academics seldom acknowledge sexual desire in religious interpretations and state ideologies. When academics theorise slavery, their perspectives focus on slaves as material producers. This approach silences the biosocial interfaces of slavery and gender in reproducing those societies. This article takes its point of departure in the rules of sexual behaviour and the monetary differential values of male/female slaves in Muslim societies. Why were female slaves valued higher? How significant was sexual desire in the reproduction of 19th century African Muslim societies? I argue that, the higher value of female slaves and the higher value of beauty amongst them signify that sex and desire were decisive factors in gendered hierarchy. The relative silence about sex is itself part of asserting the patriarchal heteronormative structure of the societies. The analysis draws from the writings of state actors in the Central Sudan, European travellers, as well as academic works on slavery in Africa. The paper argues that the demographic imbalance of the sexes produced by the export of Africans converged with Islamic state ideology that served patriarchy to privilege male sexual desire. The conclusions are, that: sexual desire is a significant factor in state ideologies in Islamic states; the silences surrounding sexual desire reflect the Muslim elite’s strategic interpretative authority in redistributing privilege; and that hetro-male privilege strategically silences discourse about sexuality in the 19th century and reverberate in social inequalities of the present.

  • Health as Experience : Exploring Health in Daily Life Drawing From the Work of Aaron Antonovsky and John Dewey
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Health Research. - : Sage Publications. - 1049-7323 .- 1552-7557. ; 30:7, s. 1004-1018
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research has pursued salutogenic and narrative approaches to deal with questions about how everyday settings are constitutive for different health practices. Healthy behavior is not a distinguishable action, but a chain of activities, often embedded in other social practices. In this article, we have endeavored to describe such a chain of activities guided by the salutogenic claim of exploring the good living argued by McCuaig and Quennerstedt. We use biographical material written by Karl Ove Knausgaard who has created a life story entitled My Struggle. The novel is selected upon an approach influenced by Brinkmann who stresses that literature can be seen as a qualitative social inquiry in which the novelist is an expert in transforming personal life experiences into common human expressions of life. The study illustrates how research with a broader notion of health can convey experiences of health, thereby complementing (and sometimes challenging) public health evidence.
