  • Fringes of the empire : Diet and cultural change at the Roman to post-Roman transition in NW Iberia
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Physical Anthropology. - : Wiley. - 0002-9483 .- 1096-8644. ; 161:1, s. 141-154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A growing number of paleodiet investigations over recent years have begun to reveal the stark dietary differences that existed between regions of the Roman Empire, as well as significant changes in subsistence strategies after its fall. The present study explores the dietary changes at the Roman to post-Roman (Germanic) transition in the Northwest Iberian Peninsula, in order to improve our understanding of the changes that occurred at end of the Roman Empire in different regions across Europe and to also consider the influence of climate had on them. The carbon and nitrogen stable isotope investigation in bone collagen from A Lanzada, NW Spain (100-700 AD), which was an important commercial, coastal settlement has been presented. A human sample of 59 individuals, 6 of them subadults, is compared with 31 faunal specimens, which include a number of marine fish. Isotope data for the terrestrial fauna reveal the influence of the sea on the local isotope baseline. Analysis of the human samples indicates a mixed marine-terrestrial diet. A shift in mean human C-13 values from -16.7 parts per thousand to -14.3 parts per thousand provides clear evidence for a significant change in diet in the post-Roman period, probably through the intensification of both marine resources exploitation and C-4-plant consumption (presumably millet). A deterioration of paleoenvironmental conditions, together with a poor socioeconomic situation and the arrival of new people, the Sueves, who brought a new political and socioeconomic system have been discussed as the main causes for the dietary modification in post-Roman times.

  • Reconstructing the impact of human activities in a NW Iberian Roman mining landscape for the last 2500 years
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Archaeological Science. - : Elsevier. - 0305-4403 .- 1095-9238. ; 50, s. 208-218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Little is known about the impact of human activities during Roman times on NW Iberian mining landscapes beyond the geomorphological transformations brought about by the use of hydraulic power for gold extraction. We present the high-resolution pollen record of La Molina mire, located in an area intensely used for gold mining (Asturias, NW Spain), combined with other proxy data from the same peat core to identify different human activities, evaluate the strategies followed for the management of the resources and describe the landscape response to human disturbances. We reconstructed the timing and synchronicity of landscape changes of varying intensity and form occurred before, during and after Roman times. An open landscape was prevalent during the local Late Iron Age, a period of relatively environmental stability. During the Early Roman Empire more significant vegetation shifts took place, reflected by changes in both forest (Corylus and Quercus) and heathland cover, as mining/metallurgy peaked and grazing and cultivation increased. In the Late Roman Empire, the influence of mining/metallurgy on landscape change started to disappear. This decoupling was further consolidated in the Germanic period (i.e., Visigothic and Sueve domination of the region), with a sharp decrease in mining/metallurgy but continued grazing. Although human impact was intense in some periods, mostly during the Early Roman Empire, forest regeneration occurred afterwards: clearances were local and short-lived. However, the Roman mining landscape turned into an agrarian one at the onset of the Middle Ages, characterized by a profound deforestation at a regional level due to a myriad of human activities that resulted in an irreversible openness of the landscape.

  • Discrimination of Ceramic Types Using Digital Image Processing by Means of Morphological Filters
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Archaeometry. - : Wiley. - 0003-813X .- 1475-4754. ; 57:1, s. 146-162
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital processing of images can be used to analyse ceramic pastes, contributing in this way to the discrimination of ceramic types. The method involves several stages of analysis: digitization of images of ceramic pastes, pre-processing of the images, particle segmentation, calculation, quantification and classification of the particle sizes. This procedure uses interactive algorithms of segmentation of images and grain size analysis derived from mathematical morphology theory. To prove the efficiency of the method, we processed digital images of polished thin sections of ceramic samples of Cypriot wares from the Late Bronze Age (1550-1450 bc) and their Egyptian reproductions. Such groups have been previously analysed by optical microscopy, XRD, XRF, ICP-MS and EPMA. The results of the analysis were able to discriminate between these two different wares.

  • Franco y el Holocausto: una revisión historiográfica : [Franco and the Holocaust: a historiographical review]
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Historia Actual Online. - : Asociación de Historia Actual. - 1696-2060. ; 1:60, s. 195-212
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article analyses the most critical historiographical contributions related to the theme of "Franco and the Holocaust". Inevitably, choosing implies exclusion; thus, this brief state of the question opts for the most outstanding works or those which have sparked controversy within this academic field, placed halfway between two great widely covered themes: Holocaust studies and Francoism. After analysing the most relevant works, it can be concluded that certain myths that originated during the dictatorship still survive in Spain and that the Holocaust continues to occupy a secondary space in national historical research.

  • Digital transformation of the automotive industry : an integrating framework to analyse technological novelty and breadth
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Industry and Innovation. - : Routledge. - 1366-2716 .- 1469-8390. ; 30:1, s. 67-102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research demonstrates that digital technologies stimulate industrial transformation by enabling new interdependencies with firms outside and across firm and industry boundaries. However, we know little about the degree of novelty and breadth of digital technologies that have the potential to transform industries. Understanding the degree of novelty (spanning from radical to incremental) and breadth (spanning from one sector to multiple sectors) of digital technologies is important for measuring their impact on industrial transformation. Through a topic modelling research approach on autonomous vehicle technology patents from firms operating in Sweden and a confirmatory survey with the inventors of those patents, this paper reveals 26 digital technology topics that are transforming the automotive industry. The digital technology topics are distributed across four ideal-typical technology categories for transformation: augmenting, spanning, transforming, and disrupting. This study illustrates the value of studying digital technologies’ transformative nature using an integrating framework; it reveals that digital technologies in the automotive industry have mainly incremental characteristics but that these characteristics provide necessary preconditions for the few more radical technologies to achieve their potential in transforming the industry.

  • Domestication as Enskilment : Harnessing Reindeer in Arctic Siberia
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of archaeological method and theory. - : Springer. - 1072-5369 .- 1573-7764.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study of reindeer domestication provides a unique opportunity to examine how domestication involves more than bodily changes in animals produced through selection. Domestication requires enskilment among humans and animals, and this process of pragmatic learning is dependent on specific forms of material culture. Particularly with the domestication of working animals, the use of such material culture may predate phenotypic and genetic changes produced through selective breeding. The Iamal region of Arctic Siberia is generating an increasingly diverse set of archeological data for reindeer domestication that evidences such processes. Three early sites, Ust’-Polui, Tiutei-Sale I, and Iarte VI, contain artifacts proposed to be parts of headgear worn by transport reindeer, the earliest dating to just over 2000 years ago. Contemporary Nenets reindeer herders scrutinized replicas of these archeological objects, and comparisons with historic reindeer harness parts from Arctic Russia were also made. Nenets consistently interpreted barbed L-shaped antler pieces from Iamal as parts of headgear for training young reindeer in pulling sleds. Some types of swivels were also interpreted as transport reindeer headgear. Based on these consultations with Nenets and observations of their ongoing reindeer domestication practices, we argue that material things such as headgear, harnesses, and sleds are not merely technological means of using or controlling reindeer in transportation but instead were part of the meshwork within which some reindeer became enskilled to being domestic. Domestication of reindeer and other animals involves ongoing efforts, landscapes, and made things, all of which form the environment within which domestic relationships emerge.
