  • Sanner, Kalle, 1978, et al. (författare)
  • Lukas / Markus
  • 2018
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Lukas/Markus is the result of a photographic project spanning over a decade. Located in the Western Cemetery in Gothenburg, architect Sven Brolid's two mirrored chapels Saint Lukas and Saint Markus were designed and built in the 1960:s, the era when Swedish functionalism was at its very peak. A stark silhouette in the otherwise sparsely built-up cemetery, the building does little to blend in with its surroundings. However, there is harmony to be found in the fine tuned correspondence between the materials and in the considered, geometrical features giving the building its characteristic appearance. During a walk through the cemetery, Kalle Sanner discovered the building and immediately felt a connection to it, prompting him to start exploring the site. As time went by, Sanner continued to return to the building with his large format camera and the project grew along with Sanner's interest in the building and its architect. The result is a sensitive portrait of both the building itself and its surroundings, but also of the passing of time as the seasons shift in front of Sanner's lense. Sanner's images are complemented by an essay by social researcher Karl Palmås. The clothbound hardcover is embossed, with partial, transparent foil, echoing the facade of Sven Brolid's building. The book was designed by Lundgren+Lindqvist and is printed in HPT Offset and featuring three different paper stocks. Kalle Sanner (b. 1978) lives and works as a photographer in Gothenburg, Sweden. In addition to self-initiated projects, Sanner works on commissions for cultural institutions, design studios and architectural firms. He is Head of the Photographic Department at Akademi Valand in Gothenburg.

  • What Images Do
  • 2019
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When images look like something they do so because they are different from what they resemble. This difference is not sufficiently captured by the traditional theories of representation and mimesis, and yet it is the condition for any such theory. Various contemporary image theorists have pointed out that Plato already understood that images are not what they look like. Images have their own existence, which cannot be identified with a concept, but should be examined in terms of actions. This book comprises fifteen articles that investigate what images do, particularly in relation to the disciplines of architecture, design and visual arts. It claims that it is the differentiating power of images—their actions—which constitutes their capacity to look like something they are not, as well as create something that does not yet exist. What Images Do address the crucial role that images might play in producing and investigating what we have not yet seen or understood in and of reality.

  • Leaving dry land: Water, heritage and imaginary agency
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This doctoral dissertation explores the interplay between water, heritage and the agency of the imagination. Instead of seeking how to map subjects or heritage, the research focuses on the ways in which mapping and the cartographic gaze have produced subjects in specific categories. It seeks to create moments of orientation and reorientation to experience the effects, affects and possibilities to imagine ways beyond these fixed geocodes and the taken for granted. As such, this dissertation contributes to broader discussions regarding critical design practices alongside critical heritage studies, while channelling design’s ability to shape the world and to explore potential approaches that foster collective imagination and planetary care. Two iterations of a fluid methodology were conducted in Mexico City and Gothenburg, foregrounding precarious issues in heritagisation processes and exploring aquatic agency. The methodology provides a tool for bridging different epistemologies, disciplines and perspectives, fostering transdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge permeation. By engaging with water as a subject and employing imaginative techniques, the research aims to actively (re)imagine the past, present and future of urban environments, enabling diverse infrastructures, ecologies and cosmologies to emerge. Heritage is reconceptualised as a navigational system that traces diverse relations in the world. In this sense, the research challenges modern heritage paradigms by acknowledging the ephemerality of water.

  • The Villa - A sacred space?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: ; , s. 3-3
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A fundamental difference between ordinary and leisure time is for many the ability to indulge in extra-ordinary activities of both body and mind. Rooted in antiquity, the renaissance villas were often used as spaces for indulgence of artistic endeavors, be it philosophical discussions, poetry-writing or lavish parties. Of indulgence, Aristoteles wrote: ‘The self-indulgent man craves for all pleasant things and is led by his appetite to choose these at the cost of everything else’.1 Built around 1547 at a time before papal nepotism went out of fashion, villa Farnese in Caprarola offered a refuge from urban life. Notably this space is not decorated in the time’s usual style of religious motives, but rather that of pagan narratives and grotesques as were the standard of villa fashion. Thus, the villa became a separate space which were defined not only by the distance to city-life, but more significantly its opposite visual environment.Building on Victor Turner’s idea of the liminal and liminoid, this presentation seeks to discuss the intersection of the sacred and the profane to which these villas lend their visual discourse. Through studying visual practices in decorations, the presentation will question what authority the remnants of antiquity play in the perception of proper leisure time, and how these contribute to the seeking of the hierophany.

  • Performance lecture: Imagining the in-between of land and water
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Rotterdam, May 2022.
  • Konstnärligt arbete (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • On the occasion of the 2022 International Architecture Biennial Rotterdam Waterweek, a collaboration with the WATERSCHOOL (Studio Makkink & Bey, Rotterdam NL) and sensory artist Maidie van den Bos (Forêt Atelier) came into existence, following our shared interest and fascination for the entangled relationships between bodies of water. For the performance lecture, a table was set as a map that initially draws the route from Jotunheimen in Norway to Lake Vänern, along the river Göta into the sea of Kattegat in Sweden, extending the itinerary to the North Sea and the Dutch delta area in Zeeland. In an intimate setting of around 18 participants in each of three sessions, the audience was invited to join in an imaginary journey narrated through stories of water in an essay written by Moniek Driesse and Sjamme van de Voort. Maidie presented and served the audience wild brews, herbaria and perfumes that brought these stories alive to all the senses. With these stories, we intended to explore the long-term and large-scale memories that water carries and how these spill into our everyday surroundings and lives.
