    • In the data-driven workflows in the materials science domain, much of the data and knowledge is stored in different heterogeneous data sources maintained by different groups. This leads to a reduced availability of the data and poor interoperability between systems in this domain. Ontology-based techniques are an important way to reduce these problems and a number of efforts have started. In this paper, we use a phrase-based topic model approach and formal topical concept analysis on unstructured text in this domain to suggest additional concepts and axioms for the ontology that should be validated by a domain expert.

    • A Quick Check property is a logical statement of aspects of the behavior of a system. We report on how similar test cases in a test suite written in Erlang can be identified and then refactored into properties, giving a generalisation of the specification implicit in the test suite. Properties give more concise, easier to maintain test suites and better test coverage. A preliminary evaluation of the techniques in industry demonstrates feasibility as well as potential benefits.

  • Fabrication of BP2T functionalized graphene via non-covalent π-π stacking interactions for enhanced ammonia detection

    • Graphene has stimulated great enthusiasm in a variety of fields, while its chemically inert surface still remains challenging for functionalization towards various applications. Herein, we report an approach to fabricate non-covalently functionalized graphene by employing pi-pi stacking interactions, which has potentialities for enhanced ammonia detection. 5,5 '-Di(4-biphenylyl)-2,2 '-bithiophene (BP2T) molecules are used in our work for the non-covalent functionalization through strong pi-pi interactions of aromatic structures with graphene, and systematic investigations by employing various spectroscopic and microscopic characterization methods confirm the successful non-covalent attachment of the BP2T on the top of graphene. From our gas sensing experiments, the BP2T functionalized graphene is promising for ammonia sensing with a 3-fold higher sensitivity comparing to that of the pristine graphene, which is mainly attributed to the enhanced binding energy between the ammonia and BP2T molecules derived by employing the Langmuir isotherm model. This work provides essential evidence of the pi-pi stacking interactions between graphene and aromatic molecules, and the reported approach also has the potential to be widely employed in a variety of graphene functionalizations for chemical detection.

  • Fabrication of reproducible sub-5 nm nanogaps by a focused ion beam and observation of Fowler-Nordheim tunneling

    • Creating a stable high resistance sub-5 nm nanogap in between conductive electrodes is one of the major challenges in the device fabrication of nano-objects. Gap-sizes of 20 nm and above can be fabricated reproducibly by the precise focusing of the ion beam and careful milling of the metallic lines. Here, by tuning ion dosages starting from 4.6 x 10(10) ions/cm and above, reproducible nanogaps with sub-5 nm sizes are milled with focused ion beam. The resistance as a function of gap dimension shows an exponential behavior, and Fowler-Nordheim tunneling effect was observed in nanoelectrodes with sub-5 nm nanogaps. The application of Simmon's model to the milled nanogaps and the electrical analysis indicates that the minimum nanogap size approaches to 2.3 nm.

    • In biomass-processing industries there is a need for enzymes that can withstand high temperatures. Extensive research efforts have been dedicated to finding new thermostable enzymes as well as developing new means of stabilising existing enzymes. The attachment of a stable non-catalytic domain to an enzyme can, in some instances, protect a biocatalyst from thermal denaturation. Carbohydrate-binding modules (CBMs) are non-catalytic domains typically found appended to biomass-degrading or modifying enzymes, such as glycoside hydrolases (GHs). Most often, CBMs interact with the same polysaccharide as their enzyme partners, leading to an enhanced reaction rate via the promotion of enzyme-substrate interactions. Contradictory to this general concept, we show an example of a chitin-degrading enzyme from GH family 18 that is appended to two CBM domains from family 92, both of which bind preferentially to the non-substrate polysaccharide β-1,6-glucan. During chitin hydrolysis, the CBMs do not contribute to enzyme-substrate interactions but instead confer a 10–15 °C increase in enzyme thermal stability. We propose that CBM92 domains may have a natural enzyme stabilisation role in some cases, which may be relevant to enzyme design for high-temperature applications in biorefinery.

  • Feasibility study about using a stand-alone wind power driven heat pump for space heating

    • Reducing energy consumption and increasing the use of renewable energy in the building sector are crucial to the mitigation of climate change. Wind power driven heat pumps have been considered as a sustainable measure to supply heat to the detached houses, especially those that even do not have access to the electricity grid. This work is to investigate the dynamic performance of a heat pump system driven by wind turbine through dynamic simulations. In order to understand the influence on the thermal comfort, which is the primary purpose of space heating, the variation of indoor temperature has been simulated in details. Results show that the wind turbine is not able to provide the electricity required by the heat pump during the heating season due to the intermittent characteristic of wind power. To improve the system performance, the influences of the capacity of wind turbine, the size of battery and the setpoint of indoor temperature were assessed. It is found that increasing the capacity of wind turbines is not necessary to reduce the loss of load probability; while on the contrary, increasing the size of battery can always reduce the loss of load probability. The setpoint temperature clearly affects the loss of load probability. A higher setpoint temperature results in a higher loss of thermal comfort probability. In addition, it is also found that the time interval used in the dynamic simulation has significant influence on the result. In order to have more accurate results, it is of great importance to choose a high resolution time step to capture the dynamic behaviour of the heat supply and its effect on the indoor temperature.

  • First High Power Test of the ESS Double Spoke Cavity

    • The first double spoke cavity for ESS project was tested with high power in the HNOSS cryostat at FREIA Laboratory. This cavity is designed for 325.21MHz, a pulse mode with 14 Hz repetition rate, up to peak power of 360 kW. The qualification of the cavity package in a high power test, involved a spoke superconducting cavity, a fundamental power coupler, LLRF system and a RF station, represented an important verification before the module assembly. This report presents the test configuration, RF conditioning history and first high power performance of this cavity package.

This report presents the test configuration, RF conditioning history and first high power performance of this cavity package.

  • First identification of rotational band structures in Re-166(75)91

    • Excited states in the odd-odd, highly neutron-deficient nucleus Re-166 have been investigated via the Mo-92(Kr-78, 3p1n)Re-166 reaction. Prompt gamma rays were detected by the JUROGAM II. gamma-ray spectrometer, and the recoiling fusion-evaporation products were separated by the recoil ion transport unit (RITU) gas-filled recoil separator and implanted into the Gamma Recoil Electron Alpha Tagging spectrometer located at the RITU focal plane. The tagging and coincidence techniques were applied to identify the gamma-ray transitions in Re-166, revealing two collective, strongly coupled rotational structures, for the first time. The more strongly populated band structure is assigned to the pi h(11/2)[514]9/2(-) circle times vi(13/2)[660]1/2(+) Nilsson configuration, while the weaker structure is assigned to be built on a two-quasiparticle state of mixed pi h(11/2)[514]9/2(-) circle times v[h(9/2)f(7/2)]3/2(-) character. The configuration assignments are based on the electromagnetic characteristics and rotational properties, in comparison with predictions from total Routhian surface and particle-rotor model calculations.
