  • The SEDIGISM survey: Molecular clouds in the inner Galaxy
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 500:3, s. 3027-3049
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We use the 13CO(2-1) emission from the SEDIGISM (Structure, Excitation, and Dynamics of the Inner Galactic InterStellar Medium) high-resolution spectral-line survey of the inner Galaxy, to extract the molecular cloud population with a large dynamic range in spatial scales, using the Spectral Clustering for Interstellar Molecular Emission Segmentation (SCIMES) algorithm. This work compiles a cloud catalogue with a total of 10 663 molecular clouds, 10 300 of which we were able to assign distances and compute physical properties. We study some of the global properties of clouds using a science sample, consisting of 6664 well-resolved sources and for which the distance estimates are reliable. In particular, we compare the scaling relations retrieved from SEDIGISM to those of other surveys, and we explore the properties of clouds with and without high-mass star formation. Our results suggest that there is no single global property of a cloud that determines its ability to form massive stars, although we find combined trends of increasing mass, size, surface density, and velocity dispersion for the sub-sample of clouds with ongoing high-mass star formation. We then isolate the most extreme clouds in the SEDIGISM sample (i.e. clouds in the tails of the distributions) to look at their overall Galactic distribution, in search for hints of environmental effects. We find that, for most properties, the Galactic distribution of the most extreme clouds is only marginally different to that of the global cloud population. The Galactic distribution of the largest clouds, the turbulent clouds and the high-mass star-forming clouds are those that deviate most significantly from the global cloud population. We also find that the least dynamically active clouds (with low velocity dispersion or low virial parameter) are situated further afield, mostly in the least populated areas. However, we suspect that part of these trends may be affected by some observational biases (such as completeness and survey limitations), and thus require further follow up work in order to be confirmed.

  • An experimental 2D-Var retrieval using AMSR2
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Measurement Techniques. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1867-1381 .- 1867-8548. ; 12:12, s. 6341-6359
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A two-dimensional variational retrieval (2D-Var) is presented for a passive microwave imager. The overlapping antenna patterns of all frequencies from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) are explicitly simulated to attempt retrieval of near-surface wind speed and surface skin temperature at finer spatial scales than individual antenna beams. This is achieved, with the effective spatial resolution of retrieved parameters judged by analysis of 2D-Var averaging kernels. Sea surface temperature retrievals achieve about 30 km resolution, with wind speed retrievals at about 10 km resolution. It is argued that multi-dimensional optimal estimation permits greater use of total information content from microwave sensors than other methods, with no compromises on target resolution needed; instead, various targets are retrieved at the highest possible spatial resolution, driven by the channels' sensitivities. All AMSR2 channels can be simulated within near their published noise characteristics for observed clear-sky scenes, though calibration and emissivity model errors are key challenges. This experimental retrieval shows the feasibility of 2D-Var for cloud-free retrievals and opens the possibility of stand-alone 3D-Var retrievals of water vapour and hydrometeor fields from microwave imagers in the future. The results have implications for future satellite missions and sensor design, as spatial oversampling can somewhat mitigate the need for larger antennas in the push for higher spatial resolution.

  • Highly Hygroscopic Aerosols Facilitate Summer and Early-Autumn Cloud Formation at Extremely Low Concentrations Over the Central Arctic Ocean
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research - Atmospheres. - 2169-897X .- 2169-8996. ; 129:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Arctic clouds are sensitive to atmospheric particles since these are sometimes in such low concentrations that clouds cannot always form under supersaturated water vapor conditions. This is especially true in the late summer, when aerosol concentrations are generally very low in the high Arctic. The environment changes rapidly around freeze-up as the open waters close and snow starts accumulating on ice. We investigated droplet formation during eight significant fog events in the central Arctic Ocean, north of 80 degrees, from August 12 to 19 September 2018 during the Arctic Ocean 2018 expedition onboard the icebreaker Oden. Calculated hygroscopicity parameters (kappa) for the entire study were very high (up to kappa = 0.85 +/- 0.13), notably after freeze-up, suggesting that atmospheric particles were very cloud condensation nuclei (CCN)-active. At least one of the events showed that surface clouds were able to form and persist for at least a couple hours at aerosol concentrations less than 10 cm-3, which was previously suggested to be the minimum for cloud formation. Among these events that were considered limited in CCN, effective radii were generally larger than in the high CCN cases. In some of the fog events, droplet residuals particles did not reactivate under supersaturations up to 0.95%, suggesting either in-droplet reactions decreased hygroscopicity, or an ambient supersaturation above 1%. These results provide insight into droplet formation during the clean late-summer and fall of the high Arctic with limited influence from continental sources. The Arctic atmosphere can be very clean in the summer, to the point that clouds cannot form because there are insufficient particles present for the water vapor to condense upon. This has important implications for the radiation budget, which is highly dependent on clouds. As part of the Arctic Ocean 2018 expedition in the central Arctic Ocean near the North Pole, we investigated the ability of particles to turn into droplets throughout the whole cruise (August 12 to 19 September 2018), and during eight significant fog events. Overall, we found that after the sea ice started to freeze, the particles were more capable of turning into cloud droplets. During one fog event, we observed fog droplets forming when the particle concentrations were lower than the limit that past studies had suggested that fog/cloud could be sustained. During several fog events, the dried fog droplets did not always re-form droplets when exposed to cloud-like conditions, which suggests that the original droplets must have formed under extreme conditions. Our results show that in the summer/fall in the high Arctic, liquid droplets sometimes form under unusual circumstances that are likely not always considered in models. Aerosol hygroscopicity was greater after surface water freeze-up than beforeHygroscopicity of Aitken mode particles was generally greater than accumulation mode particlesCloud droplet effective radii during aerosol-limited periods were larger generally than periods with higher aerosol concentrations

  • Emissions from soy biodiesel blends: A single particle perspective
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Environment. - : Elsevier BV. - 1352-2310. ; 45:20, s. 3406-3413
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Biodiesel has recently reemerged as a common fuel. However, emissions from biodiesel combustion have been studied in much less detail than those from traditional petroleum-based diesel. In this experiment, emissions from the combustion of different fuel blends (BOO, B02, B20, B99, where the number after B indicates the percentage, by volume, of biodiesel in the fuel) in a VW TDi engine were analyzed by aerosol time-of-flight mass spectrometers (ATOFMS) for single-particle composition and vacuum aerodynamic size. The ATOFMS results show that the PAH molecular weight distribution is not significantly affected by the fuel composition, and that sulfates are reduced by increased biodiesel content. Octanedioic acid (a carbonyl species) is increased with increased biodiesel concentration. Clustering results from the single-particle spectra show that the particles fall in five main types by chemical composition. The aerodynamic size distribution of these individual clusters was also determined. These results also show that methods used to identify diesel particle emissions for source apportionment are not applicable when significant concentrations of biodiesel are used in fuels. • Analysis of the Meridional Energy Transport by Atmospheric Overturning Circulations
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences. - 0022-4928 .- 1520-0469. ; 68:8, s. 1806-1820
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The atmospheric meridional overturning circulation is computed using the interim European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Re-Analysis (ERA-Interim) data. Meridional mass transport streamfunctions are calculated not only using pressure as a vertical coordinate but also using temperature, specific humidity, and geopotential height as generalized vertical coordinates. Moreover, mass transport streamfunctions are calculated using the latent, the dry static, or the moist static energy as generalized vertical coordinates. The total meridional energy transport can be obtained by integrating these streamfunctions vertically over their entire energy range. The time-averaged mass transport streamfunctions are also decomposed into mean-flow and eddy-induced components. The meridional mass transport streamfunctions with temperature and specific humidity as independent variables yield a two-cell structure with a tropical Hadley-like cell and a pronounced extratropical Ferrel-like cell, which carries warm and moist air poleward. These Ferrel-like cells are much stronger than the Eulerian zonal-mean Ferrel cell, a feature that can be understood by considering the residual circulation related to specific humidity or temperature. Regardless of the generalized vertical coordinate, the present meridional mass transport streamfunctions yield essentially a two-layer structure with one poleward and one equatorward branch. The strongest meridional overturning in the midlatitudes is obtained when the specific humidity or the moist static energy is used as the vertical coordinate, indicating that the specific humidity is the variable that best distinguishes between poleward- and equatorward-moving air in the lower troposphere.
