  • Is A Common Goal A False Hope in Convergence Research? : Opportunities and Challenges of International Convergence Research to Address Arctic Change
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Earth's Future. - : American Geophysical Union (AGU). - 2328-4277. ; 9:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Arctic faces multiple pressures including climate change, shifting demographics, human health risks, social justice imbalances, governance issues, and expanding resource extraction. A convergence of academic disciplines—such as natural and social sciences, engineering and technology, health and medicine—and international perspectives is required to meaningfully contribute to solving the challenges of Arctic peoples and ecosystems. However, successfully carrying out convergent, international research and education remains a challenge. Here, lessons from the planning phase of a convergence research project concerned with the health of Arctic waters developed by the Arctic Science IntegrAtion Quest (ASIAQ) are discussed. We discuss our perspective on the challenges, as well as strategies for success, in convergence research as gained from the ASIAQ project which assembled an international consortium of researchers from disparate disciplines representing six universities from four countries (Sweden, Japan, Russia, and the United States) during 2018–2020.

  • Distinctive features of radiation pulses in the very first moment of lightning events
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 1364-6826 .- 1879-1824. ; 109, s. 22-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the existence of distinctive features between 4 different types of lightning discharges, namely negative cloud to ground discharge (-CG), positive cloud to ground discharge (+ CG), cloud discharge (IC) and isolated breakdown discharge (IB). A total of 110 very fine structure waveforms of 44 CG, 16 +CG, 39 IC, and 11 IB discharges have been selected from a collection of 885 waveforms measured using fast electric field broadband antenna system. The measurements were carried out in Uppsala, Sweden from May to August 2010. We found that there are significant distinctions within the first 1 ms among different types of lightning discharges (-CG, +CG, IC, and IB). For example, the pulses in -CG discharges are more frequent than other discharges; the pulses in +CG discharges have the highest intensity and the IC discharge pulses tend to have shorter duration. o 2014 Elsevier Ltd. • Temporal and Wavelet Characteristics of Initial Breakdown and Narrow Bipolar Pulses of Lightning Flashes
  • 2014
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Temporal and wavelet characteristics of initial breakdown pulses are meticulously studied especially during the earliest moment of lightning events. Any possible features during the earliest moment that may exist which lead to either negative cloud-to-ground (CG), positive cloud-to-ground, cloud or isolated breakdown flashes in Sweden are investigated. Moreover, the occurrence of narrow bipolar pulses (NBPs) as part of a CG event that has been recorded from tropical thunderstorms are also included in the investigation. Electric field signatures selected from a collection of waveforms recorded using fast electric field broadband antenna system installed in Uppsala, Sweden and Skudai, South Malaysia are then carefully analyzed in order to observe any similarities or/and differences of their features.Temporal analysis reveals that there are significant distinctions within the first 1 ms among different types of lightning flashes. It is found that a negative CG flash tends to radiate pulses more frequently than other flashes and a cloud flash tends to radiate shorter pulses than other flashes but less frequently when compared to negative CG and isolated breakdown flashes. Perhaps, the ionization process during the earliest moment of negative CG flashes is more rapid than other discharges. Using a wavelet transformation, it can be suggested that the first electric field pulse of both negative CG and cloud flashes experiences a more rapid and extensive ionization process compared to positive CG and isolated breakdown flashes.Further temporal analysis on NBPs found to occur as part of CG flashes show the disparity of the normalized electric field amplitude between the NBPs prior to and after the first return stroke. This indicates that the NBPs intensities were influenced by the return stroke events and they occurred in the same thundercloud. The similarity between the temporal characteristics of NBPs as part of CG flashes and isolated NBPs suggests that their breakdown mechanisms might be similar.

  • Large Eddy Simulation of Non-Local Turbulence and Integral Measures of Atmospheric Boundary Layers
  • 2003
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A new large eddy simulation (LES) code is developed and used to investigate non-local features of turbulent planetary boundary layers (PBLs). The LES code is based on filtered Navier-Stokes equations, which describe motions of incompressible, Boussinesq fluid at high Reynolds numbers. The code computes directly large-scale, non-universal turbulence in the PBL whereas small-scale, universal turbulence is parameterized by a dynamic mixed subgrid closure. The LES code is thoroughly tested against high quality laboratory and field data. This study addresses non-local properties of turbulence which emphasis on the stable stratification. Its basic results are as follows. The flow stability in PBLs is generally caused by two mechanisms: the negative buoyancy force (in the stable density stratification) and the Coriolis force (in the rotating system). The latter stabilizes the flow if the earth’s vorticity and the turbulent vorticity are anti-parallel. The Coriolis force stability suppresses large-scale turbulence and makes large eddies asymmetric. The density stratification suppresses vertical scales of turbulence. Joint actions of the Coriolis and the buoyancy forces result in a more complex behavior of turbulence. Particularly, the layers of vigorous turbulence may appear in the course of development of low-level jets in baroclinic atmosphere. Non-local effects determine integral measures of PBLs, first of all the PBL depth. This study clearly demonstrates its pronounced dependences on the Coriolis parameter, the Kazanski-Monin internal stability parameter, and newly introduced imposed-stability and baroclinicity parameters. An LES database is created and used to validate an advanced PBL-depth formulation. LES support the idea that PBLs interact with the stably stratified free flow through the radiation of gravity waves, excited by large turbulent eddies at the interface.

  • Chemical interaction between sea-salt and tellurium, between 300 and 1180 K
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0236-5731 .- 1588-2780. ; 317:1, s. 535-543
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As an emergency action during the Fukushima accident, seawater was used to maintain cooling. To evaluate the effect of the salt on fission-products, sodium chloride, and tellurium were heated together using different ratios in different atmospheres (inert or oxidizing) using thermogravimetric analysis. The experiment under inert conditions showed no indication of interaction. However, under oxidizing conditions an interaction for all samples was observed that prevented an otherwise observed mass increase of the tellurium reference. The change in the appearance of the samples at increasing temperatures was studied by heating them in a furnace.

  • The role of the QBO in the inter-hemispheric coupling of summer mesospheric temperatures
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1680-7316 .- 1680-7324. ; 11:2, s. 495-502
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inter-hemispheric coupling between the polar summer mesosphere and planetary-wave activity in the extra-tropical winter stratosphere has recently been inferred using Polar Mesospheric Cloud (PMC) properties as a proxy for mesospheric temperature (Karlsson et al., 2007). Here we confirm these results using a ten-year time series of July mesospheric temperatures near 60 degrees N derived from the hydroxyl (OH) nightglow. In addition, we show that the time-lagged correlation between these summer mesospheric temperatures and the ECMWF winter stratospheric temperatures displays a strong Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO). The sign and phase of the correlation is consistent with the QBO modulation of the extra-tropical stratospheric dynamics in the Southern Hemisphere via the Holton-Tan mechanism (Holton and Tan, 1980). This lends strength to the identification of synoptic and planetary waves as the driver of the inter-hemispheric coupling, and results in a strong QBO modulation of the polar summer mesospheric temperatures.

  • Non-local Impacts on Eddy-Covariance Air–Lake CO2 Fluxes
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Boundary-layer Meteorology. - : Springer Nature. - 0006-8314 .- 1573-1472. ; 178:2, s. 283-300
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inland freshwater bodies form the largest natural source of carbon to the atmosphere. To study this contribution to the atmospheric carbon cycle, eddy-covariance flux measurements at lake sites have become increasingly popular. The eddy-covariance method is derived for solely local processes from the surface (lake). Non-local processes, such as entrainment or advection, would add erroneous contributions to the eddy-covariance flux estimations. Here, we use four years of eddy-covariance measurements of carbon dioxide from Lake Erken, a freshwater lake in mid-Sweden. When the lake is covered with ice, unexpected lake fluxes were still observed. A statistical approach using only surface-layer data reveals that non-local processes produce these erroneous fluxes. The occurrence and strength of non-local processes depend on a combination of wind speed and distance between the instrumented tower and upwind shore (fetch), which we here define as the time over water. The greater the wind speed and the shorter the fetch, the higher the contribution of non-local processes to the eddy-covariance fluxes. A correction approach for the measured scalar fluxes due to the non-local processes is proposed and also applied to open-water time periods. The gas transfer velocity determined from the corrected fluxes is close to commonly used wind-speed based parametrizations.
