  • A Compact Code for Simulations of Quantum Error Correction in Classical Computers
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - Melvill, New York : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 0094-243X .- 1551-7616. - 9780735406360 ; 1101, s. 355-358
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study considers implementations of error correction in a simulation language on a classical computer. Error correction will be necessarily in quantum computing and quantum information.  We will give some examples of the implementations of some error correction codes. These implementations will be made in a more general quantum simulation language on a classical computer in the language Mathematica.  The intention of this research is to develop a programming language that is able to make simulations of all quantum algorithms and error corrections in the same framework. The program code implemented on a classical computer will provide a connection between the mathematical formulation of quantum mechanics and computational methods. This gives us a clear uncomplicated language for the implementations of algorithms.

  • A Symbolic Classical Computer Language for Simulation of Quantum Algorithms
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Lecture Notes in Computer Science. - Berlin / Heidelberg : Springer. - 0302-9743 .- 1611-3349. - 9783642008337 ; 5494, s. 158-173
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quantum computing is an extremely promising research combining theoretical and experimental quantum physics, mathematics, quantum information theory and computer science. Classical simulation of quantum computations will cover part of the gap between the theoretical mathematical formulation of quantum mechanics and the realization of quantum computers. One of the most important problems in “quantum computer science” is the development of new symbolic languages for quantum computing and the adaptation of existing symbolic languages for classical computing to quantum algorithms. The present paper is devoted to the adaptation of the Mathematica symbolic language to known quantum algorithms and corresponding simulation on the classical computer. Concretely we shall represent in the Mathematica symbolic language Simon’s algorithm, the Deutsch-Josza algorithm, Grover’s algorithm, Shor’s algorithm and quantum error-correcting codes. We shall see that the same framework can be used for all these algorithms. This framework will contain the characteristic property of the symbolic language representation of quantum computing and it will be a straightforward matter to include this framework in future algorithms.

  • Exploring the presence of test anxiety and its relation to mathematical achievement in a sample of grade 3
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Skrifter från Svensk förening för matematikdidaktisk forskning. - Linköping : Svensk förening för matematikdidaktisk forskning. - 1651-3274. ; , s. 151-160
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study aims at exploring if a sample of Swedish grade 3 pupils reported any test anxiety and whether there were any relations to performance in different mathematical areas. Overall, test anxiety explained 20% of the variance for the total mathematical score, with the subscale “thoughts” as the significant predictor. The model of test anxiety also explained Number understanding, Mass and Time, Patterns, and Mathematical problems; however Mental arithmetic and Written arithmetic algorithms were not significantly explained by the model. Test anxiety seems not to be a major problem in this sample; still, significant negative correlations were found, which likely might influence the pupils in some aspects.

  • Poisson’s fundamental theorem of calculus via Taylor’s formula
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology. - 0020-739X .- 1464-5211. ; 51:5, s. 799-805
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We use Taylor’s formula with Lagrange remainder to make a modern adaptation of Poisson’s proof of a version of the fundamental theorem of calculus in the case when the integral is defined by Euler sums, that is Riemann sums with left endpoints which are equally spaced. We discuss potential benefits for such an approach in basic calculus courses. © 2019, © 2019 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

  • Analysing students' graphicacy from a National Test
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Tenth Congress of the European Society for Research in Mathematics Education (CERME10, February 1-5, 2017). - Dublin, Ireland : European Society for Research in Mathematics Education. - 9781873769737 ; , s. 3564-3571
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study explores a task containing graphical artefacts from the Swedish national test (Nationella provet – NP) for a sub-sample of grade 9 students’ solutions. The sub-sample comprising of 115 students’ solutions to the task is closely analysed, using an analytical construct founded on “identification” as well as the “critical-analytical” approach to problem solving. Based on this construct it is observed that a sizable number of students’ solutions follow a visual strategy with strong reliance on everyday forms of expression. Given the nature and purpose of NP we posit that students use the methods and tools that reflect general school practice. The analysis used in this study is perceived as problematising the assessment of competency from high stake tests, and the educational setting in general.

  • Discourse in a graphical milieu
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 34th Conference of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education. - Brazil : PME. ; , s. 78-78
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports findings from study on students discourse in a graphical milieu from PISA 2003. This was a follow up to analysis of some items containing graphics done for 8 countries where it was found that response rate for questions requiring explanatory communication was relatively low for a paper and pen environment as well as in an environment allowing collaboration and cooperation among students.

  • Students' narratives from graphical artefacts : Exploring the use of mathematics tools and forms of expression in students' graphicacy
  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The research concerns presented in this dissertation addresses aspects of students’ interaction with commonly occurring graphical artefacts in teaching and learning environments. In particular, focus is on how the students make sense of these artefacts in relation to subject specific tools and forms of expression. The dissertation comprises of four studies guided by a semiotics cultural- historical perspective to cognition. The first study which is largely quantitative, analyses the percentage scores from students’ responses to selected items from OECD PISA surveys for items containing graphical elements. The second and the third studies in keeping with a more sociocultural perspective to learning as point of departure, examine the students’ collaborative interaction around tasks containing graphical elements. The fourth study explores the nature of students’ solutions from the Swedish national test in mathematics based on a tools and forms of expression sensitive empirically derived construct of Identification contra Critical-analytical approach to graphicacy. The main outcomes of these studies can be summarised as follows: first there is justification for re-examining the predominant characterisation of students’ interaction with graphical artefacts. Secondly, while it is not uncommon for students to take a more visual-perceptive and intuitive approach to graphicacy, results from task items interactions indicate that a Critical-analytical approach seems to be more reliable and capable of yielding desirable outcomes. The outcomes of these studies call for vigilance on the type of tasks used in relation to graphicacy and how these can be used to foster students’ Critical-analytical disposition.

  • Applications of p-adics to geophysics : Linear and quasilinear diffusion of water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Theoretical and mathematical physics. - : Pleiades Publishing. - 0040-5779 .- 1573-9333. ; 190:1, s. 154-163
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a very general setting, we discuss possibilities of applying p-adics to geophysics using a p-adic diffusion representation of the master equations for the dynamics of a fluid in capillaries in porous media and formulate several mathematical problems motivated by such applications. We stress that p-adic wavelets are a powerful tool for obtaining analytic solutions of diffusion equations. Because p-adic diffusion is a special case of fractional diffusion, which is closely related to the fractal structure of the configuration space, p-adic geophysics can be regarded as a new approach to fractal modeling of geophysical processes.
