  • About students’ individual concepts of negative integers ‒ in terms of the order relation
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the eighth congress of the European Society of Research in Mathematics Education. - Ankara : Middle East Technical University. - 9789754293159 ; , s. 373-382
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigated sixth graders’ individual concepts of negative integers right before they were introduced to the “world" of the negatives. In order to investigate students’ first ideas of negative numbers, we initially investigated their ideas concerning the order relation of integers. With a qualitative data analysis utilizing a theoretical lens concerning individual concept formation, we gained insight into the students’ individual procedures and conceptions as well as into how the procedures are linked to the students’ previous knowledge.

  • Creativity in the eye of the student : Refining investigations of mathematical creativity using eye-tracking goggles
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 40th Conference of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mathematical creativity is increasingly important for improved innovation and problem-solving. In this paper, we address the question of how to best investigate mathematical creativity and critically discuss dichotomous creativity scoring schemes. In order to gain deeper insights into creative problem-solving processes, we suggest the use of mobile, unobtrusive eye-trackers for evaluating students’ creativity in the context of Multiple Solution Tasks (MSTs). We present first results with inexpensive eye-tracking goggles that reveal the added value of evaluating students’ eye movements when investigating mathematical creativity—compared to an analysis of written/drawn solutions as well as compared to an analysis of simple videos.

  • The synergy of damage repair and retention promotes rejuvenation and prolongs healthy lifespans in cell lineages
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: PLoS Computational Biology. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1553-734X .- 1553-7358. ; 16:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Damaged proteins are inherited asymmetrically during cell division in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, such that most damage is retained within the mother cell. The consequence is an ageing mother and a rejuvenated daughter cell with full replicative potential. Daughters of old and damaged mothers are however born with increasing levels of damage resulting in lowered replicative lifespans. Remarkably, these prematurely old daughters can give rise to rejuvenated cells with low damage levels and recovered lifespans, called second-degree rejuvenation. We aimed to investigate how damage repair and retention together can promote rejuvenation and at the same time ensure low damage levels in mother cells, reflected in longer health spans. We developed a dynamic model for damage accumulation over successive divisions in individual cells as part of a dynamically growing cell lineage. With detailed knowledge about single-cell dynamics and relationships between all cells in the lineage, we can infer how individual damage repair and retention strategies affect the propagation of damage in the population. We show that damage retention lowers damage levels in the population by reducing the variability across the lineage, and results in larger population sizes. Repairing damage efficiently in early life, as opposed to investing in repair when damage has already accumulated, counteracts accelerated ageing caused by damage retention. It prolongs the health span of individual cells which are moreover less prone to stress. In combination, damage retention and early investment in repair are beneficial for healthy ageing in yeast cell populations.

  • Quantitative noise sensitivity and exceptional times for percolation
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Annals of Mathematics. - : Annals of Mathematics. - 0003-486X. ; 171:2, s. 619-672
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One goal of this paper is to prove that dynamical critical site percolation on the planar triangular lattice has exceptional times at which percolation occurs. In doing so, new quantitative noise sensitivity results for percolation are obtained. The latter is based on a novel method for controlling the "level k" Fourier coefficients via the construction of a randomized algorithm which looks at random bits, outputs the value of a particular function but looks at any fixed input bit with low probability. We also obtain upper and lower bounds on the Hausdorff dimension of the set of percolating times. We then study the problem of exceptional times for certain "k-arm" events on wedges and cones. As a corollary of this analysis, we prove, among other things, that there are no times at which there are two infinite "white" clusters, obtain an upper bound on the Hausdorff dimension of the set of times at which there are both an infinite white cluster and an infinite black cluster and prove that for dynamical critical bond percolation on the square grid there are no exceptional times at which three disjoint infinite clusters are present.

  • A filter-flow perspective of haematogenous metastasis offers a non-genetic paradigm for personalised cancer therapy
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Cancer. - : Elsevier BV. - 0959-8049. ; 50:17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research into mechanisms of haematogenous metastasis has largely become genetic in focus, attempting to understand the molecular basis of ‘seed–soil’ relationships. Preceding this biological mechanism is the physical process of dissemination of circulating tumour cells (CTCs) in the circulation. Patterns of metastatic spread have been previously quantified using the metastatic efficiency index, a measure quantifying metastatic incidence for a given primary-target organ pair and the relative blood flow between them. We extend this concept to take into account the reduction in CTCs which occurs in organ capillary beds connected by a realistic vascular network topology. Application to a dataset of metastatic incidence reveals that metastatic patterns depend strongly on assumptions about the existence and location of micrometastatic disease which governs CTC dynamics on the network, something which has heretofore not been considered – an oversight which precludes our ability to predict metastatic patterns in individual patients.

  • Exploring student collaboration during Data Generation in the Statistics Classroom : An Inferentialist Perspective
  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation explores student collaboration during data generation in statistics. The first aim is to put the semantic theory of inferentialism to work and develop a theoretical lens for exploring student collaboration during data generation. The second is to use the previously developed inferentialist lens regarding collaboration to better understand data generation processes in the statistics classroom. Two studies were conducted in Swedish 5th and 7th grade classes. The first involved 7th-grade students collaboratively engaged in experimentation with paper helicopters and their flight durations. The second study involved 5th graders experimenting with paper frogs and their jump lengths. The analyses reveal that inferentialism is a meaningful perspective for exploring student collaboration. One salient theoretical contribution of this thesis is that the inferentialist concept of norms helps avoid the dichotomy between social and individual facets of collaboration and learning that have plagued research on collaboration. However, by using the inferentialism lens, the social and individual can be regarded in their intertwined and dynamic natures. The thesis also illustrates how the formulation of tasks, social conditions, and norms mutually condition students’ learning opportunities. It is also demonstrated that data generation processes can also involve conceptual learning opportunities. The results offer ideas concerning which classroom conditions and manners of formulating tasks may contribute to such conceptual learning opportunities

  • Educating future generations' master mariners: Using visualisation for recreating, assessing, and learning from prior performance in post-simulation debriefings
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 20th Commemorative Annual General Assembly, AGA 2019 - Proceedings of the International Association of Maritime Universities Conference, IAMUC 2019. ; , s. 228-233
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study draws on video recorded data of debriefings in a navigation course to analyse the practical use of visualisation technologies in post-simulation debriefing. The analytical focus is on instructions, i.e. the instructors' use of the playback and interplay with the students. The results show how the playback creates a shared perceptual field to which instructions are directed and navigational problems are elaborated to demonstrate how to coordinate with other ships in confined waters. The meanings of the rules of the sea are hard to teach in abstraction since every decision relies on an infinite number of contingencies that have to be accounted for. The use of visualisations in post-simulation debriefings offers opportunities to portray rules in a context in which their meanings could be tied both to situations as they were actually carried out and to demonstrate more preferable alternatives.
