- Pilot- and demonstration plants (PDPs) represent bridges between generating basic knowledge and technological breakthroughs on the one hand, and industrial applications and commercial adoption on the other. This paper reports on a longitudinal study of how two technological fields that received significant public funding evolved—biochemical conversion of biomass and thermal conversion of black liquor. In doing so, this study makes two contributions. First, it provides a framework for analyzing the roles of various types of PDPs in developing new technology. The framework highlights the learning processes taking place at and around these plants and how they contribute to reducing different types of risks. It also elaborates on the importance of actor networks and institutional preconditions, and how both network performance and institutions can be influenced through various strategies. Second, the article contributes with new insights into the challenges of innovation policy in a PDP context. A policy mix is often required because policy cannot be considered meaningfully at a single level of government and will therefore be influenced heavily by limited foresight and politics (both nationally and locally). Therefore, policy must address both the need for parallel and iterative public funding of R&D and different types of plants, as well as attempts to directly influence collaborative processes in actor networks.

- Psychological and physiological benefits of viewing nature have been extensively studied for some time. More recently it has been suggested that some of these positive effects can be explained by nature's fractal properties. Virtually all studies on human responses to fractals have used stimuli that represent the specific form of fractal geometry found in nature, i.e. statistical fractals, as opposed to fractal patterns which repeat exactly at different scales. This raises the question of whether human responses like preference and relaxation are being driven by fractal geometry in general or by the specific form of fractal geometry found in nature. In this study we consider both types of fractals (statistical and exact) and morph one type into the other. Based on the Koch curve, nine visual stimuli were produced in which curves of three different fractal dimensions evolve gradually from an exact to a statistical fractal. The patterns were shown for one minute each to thirty-five subjects while qEEG was continuously recorded. The results showed that the responses to statistical and exact fractals differ, and that the natural form of the fractal is important for inducing alpha responses, an indicator of a wakefully relaxed state and internalized attention.

- The pursuit of infinite growth on a planet with finite resources is leading to a failure in achieving global sustainable transition goals. The concept of Degrowth or 'post-growth' has emerged as a counter-movement advocating for alternative approaches focused on living within resource constraints. Within this context, small-scale communities with post-growth orientations are particularly interesting, as they actively explore their own alternative development models. These communities have potential to act as decentralised laboratories for radical change, translating Degrowth/post-growth theory into actionable practices. This paper examines how the operational tools have changed for post-growth communities since 2004 (Web 2.0). Through in-depth interviews with tech-savvy representatives in this field, the study explores the potential of "new" technologies to empower post-growth communities.

- How does the local government stimulate knowledge intensive industry, within a regional innovation system? That is the research question for this paper. We analyze the development of the nanotechnology industry in Suzhou and the electrical vehicle industry in Hangzhou. They are used as cases to analyze the role of local government, and we do so from four aspects, namely technology, human capital, market and finance. In these cases, the local government helped the emerging industry not only in stimulating technological collaboration but also in creating market demand. While the local governments stimulated all four aspects listed above, the incentive to create demand has been particularly crucial.

- Public energy advising is a policy measure used to provide customized energy information and advice to energy end-users. It aims at encouraging and promoting decisions leading to reduced environmental impact from energy use. While the independent function of public energy advising is unique and important, in Sweden, the role of energy advisors is changing. With new and more complex client demands as well as increasing competition from other forms of advising, there is a need to examine the shift that public energy advising is facing. The aim is to provide an overview of the activities performed by public energy advisors in Sweden and to explore the roles that they play in the transition to a sustainable energy system. Based on a qualitative analysis of 129 activity reports from Swedish municipal energy advisors, this paper shows that public energy advisors do not only play a role on an actor-level, but also on a system-level, by undertaking activities connecting the target groups to other actors in society and translating national policy to the local level. These system-level roles represent an important potential for policies aimed at accelerating the energy transition, and thus they should be encouraged and maximized.
