  • Soft Power, World System Dynamics, and Democratization : A Bass Model of Democracy Diffusion 1800–2000
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: JASSS. - Surrey : JASSS. - 1460-7425. ; 14:(1) 4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Political scientists seldom translate system terminology into systems analysis. This article uses Polity IV data to probe system dynamics for studies of the global diffusion of democracy from 1800 to 2000. By analogy with the Bass model of diffusion of innovations (1969), as translated into system dynamics by Sterman (2000), the dynamic explanation proposed focuses on transitions to democracy, soft power, and communication rates on a global level. The analysis suggests that the transition from democratic experiences (“the soft power of democracy”) can be estimated from the systems dynamics simulation of an extended Bass model. Soft power, fueled by the growth in communications worldwide, is today the major force behind the diffusion of democracy. Our findings indicate the applicability of system dynamics simulation tools for the analysis of political change over time in the world system of polities.

  • Identitet och genus i lek med dockor och figurer i förskolan
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Nordisk Pedagogik. - Oslo : Universitetsforlaget. - 0901-8050 .- 1504-2995. ; 26:2, s. 124-138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this text is to introduce perspectives, questions and empirical examples regarding children's identity construction in play with dolls and figures that represent women and men in both gender-typed and non gender-typed ways. Videotaped play of two 4-year old boys and three 5-year-old girls in a preschool setting is analyzed from complementary interactionistic and socio-cultural perspectives. The level of plasticity in the toyplay is interpreted. The results suggest ways in wich the gender-plastic character of toy play can be founded in children's intentions as well as in the toys' character as mediating tools. The analysis is based on whether children play with, through, in or beside their toy gestalts. These and other similar distinctions help to differentiate identity consequences in play.

  • Children's toy collections in Sweden : A less gender-typed country?
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Sex Roles. - New York : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0360-0025 .- 1573-2762. ; 52:1-2, s. 93-102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to describe and analyze differences between girls' and boys' toy collections in a country that strongly emphasizes gender equality (Sweden). The study was based on the assumptions that toy collections reflect social values in the society where they are found and that Sweden has less gendered values than do many other countries. The toy collections of 152 3- and 5-year old Swedish children were inventoried, and the results were analyzed and discussed in relation to previous research on children's toy collections and toy preferences in North America and Western Europe. The Swedish toy collections were found to be gender-typed in ways similar to those reported in previous research in other countries.

  • Mellan jaget och världen : Feminism och etik under nyliberala villkor
  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The overall purpose of this study is to investigate how the tension between feminism as an ethical and political project is brought into light under neoliberal conditions. More specifically, the aim is to, through 21 interviews with 12 self-defined left-wing Swedish feminists whose living conditions, political action and self-understanding are conditioned by the economic, political and ideological imprints of neo-liberalism, study potential joints and crimes between feminism and neoliberalism and how these relate to the tensions between ethics and politics that have been present long before the entry of neoliberalism on the scene. The analysis is largely done in close dialogue with the feminist political thinkers Wendy Brown, Nancy Fraser and Chantal Mouffe, all of whom have devoted themselves to the relationship between ethics and politics and the effects of neoliberalism on political movements and political subjectivity. It also engages in academic work on neoliberal subjectivity and ideology and progressive movements.

  • Feminism as Power and Resistance : An Inquiry into Different Forms of Swedish Feminist Resistance and Anti-Genderist Reactions
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Social Inclusion. - Lisbon, Portugal : Cogitatio Press. - 2183-2803 .- 2183-2803. ; 6:4, s. 82-94
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores how resistance and power are intertwined within the field of mainstream Swedish feminism, by analyzing some of its more visible expressions and strategies. These feminist resistance strategies could be described as circulating resistance (e.g., the #metoo campaign), public assemblies, the more subtle “disciplinary resistance”, and state feminism. The article illustrates how these different forms of resistance fuel different reactions from movements that reiterate different discourses of “anti-genderism”. In addition, some forms of feminism (state feminism and feminist disciplinary resistance) sometimes develop into, or overlap with, different technologies of power.

  • Understanding Power and Performing Resistance: Swedish Feminists, Civil Society Voices, Biopolitics and “Angry” Men
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: NORA - Nordic Journal of Feminist and Gender Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0803-8740 .- 1502-394X. ; 21:4, s. 264-279
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses feminist resistance in relation to different concepts of power. In particular, it analyzes current debates within Swedish feminism in order to understand what perceptions of power and resistance are being harboured within these discussions. Within the Swedish feminist debate it has been suggested that the equality debate must be radicalized, creating real change instead of policy reports and political party programmes. Others, however, have argued that we must not abandon equality politics for “conflict, struggle and revolt”. This debate is discussed from different theories of power and resistance and we argue that different forms of power become entangled with different forms of resistance, thus creating manifold and messy forms of resistance.

  • Women business ventures in Swedish university incubators
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Gender and Entrepreneurship. - Bingley : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1756-6266 .- 1756-6274. ; 5:1, s. 78-96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Despite a growing interest in both women and university academic entrepreneurship, there are very few studies addressing women’s academic entrepreneurship. The authors address this gap by focusing on university incubators for women’s academic entrepreneurship. The purpose of this paper is to examine and analyze the significance of university incubators for the promotion and development of women’s academic business start-ups.Design/methodology/approach: The authors use a unique Swedish database for multivariate statistical tests on the performance of groups of women- and men-led ventures, as well as on groups of women incubatees. The database includes data for over 1,400 ventures, out of which 210 ventures are by women entrepreneurs.Findings: About 15 percent of the ventures in the incubators are started and managed by women entrepreneurs. Several significant differences were found between the groups, but the overall conclusion is that the Swedish incubators in this study do not show any evidence of being able to decrease the gender gap in the commercialization of university science.Originality/value: The study makes three important contributions. First, it applies a multilevel design that takes into consideration the relationship between individual firms and the incubator environment. Second, the authors conducted their analysis on women academic entrepreneurs who start their ventures in incubators, which means that the authors are concerned with a specific knowledge-intensive context, where men and women entrepreneurs possess fairly similar levels of human capital. Third, the unique database allows statistical analysis on a large data set, which provides research-based knowledge about the conditions for entrepreneurial career development among women in academic environments. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

  • Impact of the organisational culture on primary care staff members' intention to engage in research and development
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Health Organization & Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1477-7266 .- 1758-7247. ; 29:2, s. 234-251
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to understand how organisational culture influences the intentions of primary care staff members (PCSM) to engage in research and development (R&D).Design/methodology/approachThe participants (n = 30) were PCSM employed in a care centre in south-western Sweden. The study had an observational design with an ethnographic approach. The data were collected by means of observations, interviews and analysis of documents.FindingsThe results revealed the perceptions of PCSM in two domains, research and clinical practice, both of which existed at three different cultural levels: visible (structures and policy), semivisible (norms and values) and invisible (taken-for-granted attitudes).Research limitations/implicationsIt is difficult to conduct a purely objective ethnographic study because the investigation is controlled by its context. However, it is necessary to highlight and discuss the invisible level to improve understanding of negative attitudes and preconceptions related to the implementation of R&D in the clinical setting. Practical implications - By highlighting the invisible level of culture, the management of an organisation has the opportunity to initiate discussion of issues related to concealed norms and values as well as attitudes towards new thinking and change in the primary health context.Originality/valueThis paper is one of the very few studies to investigate the influence of organisational culture on the intentions of PCSM to engage in R&D.
