  • A study of the relationship between social cognitive factors and career choice satisfaction within the technology career path : a gendered perspective
  • 2021
  • In: Global Business Review. - : Sage. - 0972-1509 .- 0973-0664. ; 22:4, s. 851-864
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The technology workforce is plagued by a diversity issue caused by women leaving the field at an alarming rate. This global phenomenon afflicts developing nations in particular, since women are believed to make up only 30% of the technology workforce. However, there is little empirical data from developing nations on the phenomenon since most studies on the topic have been conducted in industrialized countries. This paper therefore explores the relationship between socio-cognitive mechanisms (self-efficacy, outcome expectation, perceived social support, academia-family role conflict) and career choice satisfaction, which is posited to be one of the key influencers in an individual’s decision to continue along a particular career path. A questionnaire was used to collect data from students pursuing technology courses, such as in bachelor programmes in informatics and telecommunications, at a private university in Kenya. The findings reveal that self-efficacy, outcome expectations and perceived social support positively influence career choice satisfaction, especially among female students, whereas academic-family role conflict negatively influences career choice satisfaction of female students only. This means that government, higher education institutions and employers need to be attentive to socio-cognitive mechanisms that influence women and use this information to reduce the exodus of women from careers in technology.

  • Human Resource Provision and Capacity Development : Recent Initiatives at Lantmäteriet in Sweden
  • 2015
  • In: Proceedings of the FIG Working Week 2015. - Copenhagen : International Federation of Surveyors (FIG). - 9788792853356
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Securing human resources (HR), building capacity, and implementing the potential of existingstaff are vital for the development of any organisation or company, including the landsurveying, cadastral and land management sectors. This raises questions concerning how tocompete with others and what is the necessary level of capacity among current and futureemployees. Let us ask ourselves: who wants to become a surveyor today, and what makes himor her stay within the business? These issues seem to be familiar to many of the authoritiesand companies in our professional field around the world. There is likely a range of differentanswers depending on country-specific aspects.Lantmäteriet (the Swedish mapping, cadastral and land registration authority) alone estimatesa need for a hundred new employees annually over the next years in order to manage theongoing change of generations and the increasing demand for services within certain areas. Inaddition, most municipalities and various regional and national authorities having landsurveyors in their workforce are looking for new staff to their organisations. Besides thisdemand from the public sector, private companies within the property business are also inneed of new staff. A major challenge is hence finding efficient ways to recruit new cadastralsurveyors, geodesists, geodata specialists, lawyers, etc., and to keep them for a significantperiod of time. Lantmäteriet has therefore taken various initiatives during the last few years. Some activities target the whole organisation, while others are tailor-made to fit particularbranches. This paper presents several current and recent initiatives regarding HR provision and capacitydevelopment affecting Lantmäteriet’s personnel. Examples are promotion activities atschools, teaching support to universities, internal training for new staff, continuous learningfor experienced staff, mentorships, talent development programmes, and networking withother authorities. The paper also touches upon impacts so far and what is anticipated for thecoming years.

  • Overcoming the headwinds: Can policy design shape public acceptance of wind power in Sweden?
  • 2024
  • In: Energy Research & Social Science. - : Elsevier. - 2214-6296 .- 2214-6326. ; 116
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper explores wind power attitudes in Sweden, considering the proximity of wind power installations, using a large-scale survey (N = 5280). The study examines if attitudes were affected by policies that provide collective financial benefits through municipal tax revenues, personal benefits through direct compensation, or openings for democratic involvement. Only 15 % of the respondents expressed negative attitudes to wind power as a measure to speed up the transition to a fossil free society, while 26 % were negative to wind power built within 5 km from their homes. Attitudes were mainly predicted by ideological standpoints, environmental concern and political and governmental trust. The study found that for wind power constructed in the home municipality, respondents preferred collectively distributed financial benefits, while direct personal compensation offers the best prospects to influence ideologically motivated attitudes. None of the policy interventions tested in this study had any significant effect on respondents with strongly negative views.

  • Analysing the use of tools, initiatives, and approaches to promote sustainability in corporations
  • 2020
  • In: Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1535-3958 .- 1535-3966. ; 27:2, s. 982-998
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Interest in sustainability from the corporate sector is evidenced by over 13,000 companiesin 160 countries that have signed the United Nations Global Compact. In thiscontext, a number of tools, initiatives, and approaches (TIAs), e.g., circular economy, corporate social responsibility, eco-efficiency, life cycle assessment, and sustainabilityreporting have been developed by and for corporations to engage and promote sustainabilitywithin their systems. Each of the TIAs has advantages when addressingsustainability issues and the company system's elements, but it has disadvantages indealing with their complexities and interactions. Relying only on one TIA results in alimited contribution to sustainability, whereas using too many TIAs wastes resourcesand energy. The Corporate and Industrial Voluntary Initiatives for Sustainability(CIVIS) has been proposed to better combine the TIAs. A survey was developed toinvestigate the use of 24 TIAs. The survey was sent to a database of 5,299 organisations(of which 3,603 were companies), from which 202 responses were obtained. The responses were analysed using ratio analysis, principal component analysis, andcluster analysis. The responses show that some TIAs are well known and providegood results when used, for example, corporate social responsibility, corporate sustainability, and Global Reporting Initiative reports. The analyses show a number ofgroups of the TIAs that can help to better combine them. The paper updates theCIVIS framework in order to provide clearer guidance on how to combine the TIAs. Acombination of between four and six initiatives appears to be most effective way topromote sustainability. The TIAs can help to promote sustainability in corporations, but they need to be combined correctly in order to address holistically the fourdimensions of sustainability, the system elements, and stakeholders, while avoidingduplication of tasks and wasting resources.

  • Disrupting the brave new world : COVID-19 effects on organisations’ sustainability efforts
  • 2021
  • In: Journal of Organizational Change Management. - : Emerald. - 0953-4814 .- 1758-7816. ; 34:3, s. 613-628
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Purpose – Organisations have been working towards becoming more sustainable; where their efforts have been mainly on a steady state focussing on internal proactive changes. The purpose of this paper is to analyse how external events, e.g. COVID-19, affect organisations and their sustainability efforts.Design/methodology/approach – A survey was sent to a database of 11,657 contacts, with a response rate of 5.60% obtained. The results were analysed using descriptive statistics, ranking and a ratio analysis comparing different types of organisations (corporations, higher education institutions, civil society and public sector organisations).Findings – COVID-19 changed the organisation drivers for and barriers to sustainability perspective towards external stimuli, rather than internal factors. COVID-19 also affected the system elements negatively, with the exception of organisational systems. The results also show that the system elements are affected by an external event or crisis and are dependent on the type of organisation.Originality/value – This paper proposes the “Organisational sustainability transition forced by exogenous events” framework to help organisations better understand and be prepared for unexpected external events. Organisations should learn from the experiences in dealing with COVID-19 and adopt a more humanistic approach to their sustainability efforts, rather than traditional approaches based on solipsism and technomanagerial centrism.

  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
