  • Modern flight training - managing automation or learning to fly?
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Coping with Computers in the Cockpit. - : Taylor and Francis. ; , s. 145-151
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter explores several ways in which automation and preparation for future supervisory control work in cockpits could be meaningfully integrated in the stages where the groundwork for pilot competence is laid. It discusses ab initio training, the phase in which new recruits is brought up to commercial pilot status in about 200 hours of flying. The limited flying time received during ab initio training is mostly gained on aircraft whose level of automation has little resemblance to that of the pilot’s ultimate working environment. Even without advanced automation in training aircraft the future performance of the student could benefit from learning that manual flying is only one among other modes of flying while practising the basic flying skills. Although automation has fundamentally changed the roles of people on the flight deck, it has not reduced the need to invest in human expertise. Treating automation as a separate subject may misrepresent its place in the curriculum of modem flight training.

  • A Framework For Language And Communication In The Cdio Syllabus
  • 2016
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How can the CDIO syllabus for Communications in Foreign Languages be translated into progressive and achievable goals that engineering students can aim for?  How can teachers of additional languages, often with no technical background, best prepare these students before they leave for exchange semesters abroad and the world of work? This paper responds to these issues by presenting the work of the Global Engineers Language Skills (GELS) project. The aim of the project is to investigate which communication skills are most used by engineers in industry and, ultimately, to prepare a teaching guide for language departments that work with engineering students. This paper presents the results of the investigation and the resultant adaptation of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) for the specific needs of engineers. By combining this framework with CDIO’s syllabus for Communications and Communications in Foreign Languages, we argue that a more ambitious and effective integration of additional languages, communication, and engineering at our universities could not only be within our reach, but should rather be a priority to ensure that our students can engineer both at home and abroad.

  • The Global Engineers Language Skills (GELS) Network : An Update
  • 2020
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2015, three language teachers working with student engineers at different European universities founded the Global Engineers Language Skills (GELS) network. The teachers’ aims were to investigate and categorize necessary and desirable language and communication skills for engineers and ensure that these findings actively support the teaching and learning of additional languages in technical universities and engineering departments. We presented preliminary results of our work at CDIO’s international conference in 2016. In this paper, we summarize the network’s development since then, interpret the results of our investigations, and describe our work to disseminate our results and promote effective language and communication skills for engineering students. We also summarize our more recent work on enhancing the GELS framework of skills, applying for Erasmus+ KA2 funding, developing the GELS network from three to thirty universities through training events, integrating intercultural communication skills in our work, and teaching and learning through the medium of English.

  • Using PFC2D to simulate the shear behaviour of joints in hard crystalline rock
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of Engineering Geology and the Environment. - : Springer Nature. - 1435-9529 .- 1435-9537. ; 81:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Significant uncertainties remain regarding the assessment of the peak shear strength of rock joints. In recent years, Particle Flow Code (PFC) has been used to simulate shear tests of rock joints. Although previous studies showed PFC's capability to simulate rock joint shear behaviour, it is uncertain how different parameters in PFC should be combined to realistically capture roughness and strength of asperities in contact of actual rock joints. Under low normal stresses, the shear behaviour of well-mated hard crystalline joints is governed by the interaction between asperities of some tenths of a millimetre. This paper investigates the capability of PFC2D to realistically simulate the peak shear strength of hard crystalline rock joints under different constant normal stress magnitudes. The simulated two-dimensional profiles were selected from the digitised joint surface obtained with optical scanning measurements. To realistically capture surface roughness and asperity strength in PFC2D, different values of joint segment length, particle resolution per segment, and bond strength between particles were studied and calibrated while taking into account the laboratory observations. The results of the numerical simulations in the PFC2D environment show that the simulated peak shear strength using the profile containing the steepest asperity is in good agreement with that measured in the laboratory. The joint profile needs to be represented by both a magnitude of segment length that captures the grain size, and at least two particles per segment. The bond strength calibration needs to account for both asperity size and the number of particles in contact during shearing.

  • Non-market values of algae beach-cast management – Study site Trelleborg, Sweden
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Ocean and Coastal Management. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0964-5691 .- 1873-524X. ; 140, s. 59-67
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Eutrophication is one of the most serious global threats to coastal areas. One effect of eutrophication is seasonal macroalgal blooms. As a consequence, large amounts of beach-cast algae are today reported from coastal areas worldwide. In this study, we analyze nonmarket benefits by capturing local residents’ Willingness To Pay (WTP) for an environmental program to regularly remove and utilize beach-cast algae to produce bioenergy and biofertilizer. Results indicate a considerable WTP among local residents in the Baltic Sea study site. This WTP estimate together with a potential increase in non-resident beach tourism amounts to potentially substantial welfare benefits from the environmental program. These benefits could encourage similar environmental programs in the future.

  • Implementing lean in a service environment
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: <em>Advances in Production Management Systems -</em> <em>new challenges, new approaches</em>. - Boston : Springer. ; , s. 587-594
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study provides a description of what Lean means in a service context, focused on the energy sector. The study covered a range of operational processes, including TQM, Six Sigma and freestanding benchmarking and Kaizen initiatives. A divide between managers actively implementing Lean and those that are not is clear in both survey results and interviews; this divide is driven wider by the misunderstanding of what is actually being implemented, sometimes inappropriately assigned as Lean. Moreover, only a core of Lean manufacturing attributes are carried through into services: waste removal, responding to customer demand and increased breadth of communications in the firm. The study also finds that Lean is consistently confused with Six Sigma, but that this does not negatively impact the Lean implementation.

  • Operational risk : From finance to operations management
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 21th Annual Production and Operations Management Society Conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This conceptual paper outlines the definition of operational risk and its relevance to the operations management community. It argues that in overcoming inconsistencies in the Basel II definition of operational risks ‘risks associated to failure of people, processes, systems and/ or external events, including legal but excluding strategic or reputational risks’, that Operational risk is rather ‘risk of process failure’, and places the challenge within the operations management conceptual paradigm. The ‘process perspective definition’ of Operational risk, and the core objective to seek efficiency and effectiveness in management of Operational risk, opens opportunities for association and research with a wider range of production, quality and performance management disciplines e.g. performance management systems, stakeholder and decision making theories. Further the revised definition has greater recognition and consistency with the concept of sustainability, and allows for attributing risk outcome into social, political and economic contexts.
