  • Outdoor Office Work : An Interactive Research Project Showing the Way Out
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Psychology. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-1078. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The physical boundaries of office work have become increasingly flexible. Work is conducted at multiple locations outside the office, such as at clients' premises, at home, in cafés, or when traveling. However, the boundary between indoor and outdoor environment seems to be strong and normative regarding how office work is performed. The aim of this study was to explore how office work may be conducted outdoors, understanding how it is being experienced by office employees and identifying its contextual preconditions. Based on a two-year interactive research project, the study was conducted together with a Swedish municipality. Fifty-eight participants engaged in the collaborative learning process, including 40 half-day workshops and reflective group discussions, co-interviews, and participants' independent experimentation of bringing work activities outdoors. Data was collected via interviews, group discussions and a custom-made mobile application. The results showed that a wide range of work activities could be done outdoors, both individually and in collaboration with others. Outdoor work activities were associated with many positive experiences by contributing to a sense of well-being, recovery, autonomy, enhanced cognition, better communication, and social relations, but also with feelings of guilt and illegitimacy. Conditions of importance for outdoor office work to happen and function well were found in the physical environment, where proximity to urban greenspaces stood out as important, but also in the sociocultural and organizational domains. Of crucial importance was managers' attitudes, as well as the overall organizational culture on this idea of bringing office work outdoors. To conclude, if working life is to benefit from outdoor office work, leaders, urban planners and policymakers need to collaborate and show the way out.

  • Det är väl typiskt tjejer : om basket, kropp och femininitet
  • 2015
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this dissertation is to analyse how a group of female basketball players – aged 15 to 18 and located in one of Sweden’s largest cities – construct and negotiate gender and femininity through bodily and verbal practices. The study is grounded in poststructuralist theories – primarily using the theoretical work of the philosophers Judith Butler and Michel Foucault. The methods used are qualitative: participant observations, interviews and written dialogues via Facebook. The writing method used is ethnographic fiction. The first part of the analysis shows how the female basketball players frequently talk about appearance and also how they repeatedly talk about the fleshier matters of the body – such as muscles and fat. These recurrent verbal practices are parts of the processes through which the girls construct gender and femininity, and a way of exercising relational power. The girls themselves explain their frequent talk about body and appearance as something “typical” for girls and thus they use a discourse that circles them (as young women) in order to make themselves understandable. The second part of the analysis depicts how the female basketball players – in the locker room – before every game construct similar and socially recognizable female bodies. These recurrent bodily practices are further parts of the processes through which the girls construct gender and femininity. Additionally, in the second part, the analysis show how the female basketball players – through verbal and bodily practices – transform gender and convert femininity within sport and also how they, in game situations, embody two different discourses: “Girl Power” and “the insecure (sporting) girl” that encompass young (sporting) women. One conclusion in the thesis is that discourses that surround young (sporting) females appear to be central in their creation of gender identity. Furthermore, the (sporting) girls are active participants in the ongoing debate regarding what (sporting) girls are, can be and should be.

  • Vulnerability Analysis in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) : Indications of Intersecting Vulnerable Positions in a NationalSurvey Among Young People in Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Sexuality Research & Social Policy. - : Springer Nature. - 1868-9884 .- 1553-6610. ; 19, s. 1034-1045
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • IntroductionSexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) policies use gender as the foremost social determinant toexplain vulnerability in relation to SRHR among young people. Therefore, our aim was to explore intersecting vulnerablepositions within the three SRHR-related outcome areas: unsafe sex, sex against one’s will, and transactional sex, amongyoung people aged 16–29.MethodsThe data set is from a randomised, cross-sectional, and population-based SRHR survey conducted in Swedenin 2015, and the 7755 respondents imply a response rate (26%) in line with the power estimations. How gender intersectswith fve other social positions, i.e. social determinants (sexual identity, transgender experience, perceived economy, beingforeign-born, and social welfare recipiency), was explored through a stepwise descriptive intersecting vulnerability analysisexemplifed through three outcome variables: unsafe sex, sex against one’s will, and transactional sex.ResultsGender intersects with other social determinants and creates vulnerable positions in SRHR-related outcomes. Themost vulnerable positions within each of the three outcome variables were the following: (1) for unsafe sex: being a manand homosexual; (2) for sex against one’s will: being a woman and bisexual; and (3) for transactional sex: being a man andhaving transgender experience. Conclusions Despite limitations, the descriptive intersecting vulnerability analysis indicates how gender intersects withother social determinants and generates multiple vulnerable positions in relation to SRHR.Policy ImplicationsThe results can be of interest in future studies on vulnerability and inform policies that intend to fulflthe intention of leaving no one behind, as stated in the Agenda 2030.

  • Leaderless Management as the Solution to Struggles Over the Moral Center of Healthcare? : Ward Nurses’ Critique of Management as “Real Utopias” in the Public Sector
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Debating Leaderless Management : Can Employees Do Without Leaders? - Can Employees Do Without Leaders?. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783031045929 - 9783031045936 ; , s. 77-95
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Through a historization of the Swedish public sector together with vignettes grounded in interviews, this paper questions managerialism in the public sector. The chapter argues for leaderless management as a shift of attention from managerialism toward worker control. The chapter explores what nurses identify as central areas of conflict shaping their work, and what forms of change they view as necessary to create a more sustainable work situation, for themselves and the patients. Workers—not managers—within the public sector are key knowledge bearers in confronting the crisis of care. Inspired by Nancy Fraser’s idea of a care crisis, as well as Erik Olin Wright’s discussion on real utopia, the chapter analyzes how public sector workers frame their work-life. We use this to frame a vision of leaderless management. Specifically, we draw out three arguments for leaderless management of (1) time, (2) caring, and (3) resources.

  • Sexual Fantasies : At the Convergence of the Cultural and the Individual
  • 2015
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This book expands the notion of sexual fantasies from the field of psychology into the realms of cultural studies, anthropology, philosophy, and sociology. So far, much research on sexual fantasies has dealt with issues of gender differences, the effect of sexual fantasies on people’s lives, or how problematic fantasies can be treated in therapy. In this volume contributors from different academic disciplines explore sexual fantasies at the convergence of the cultural and the individual, taking into account that fantasies are paradoxical: highly individualised and private, and at the same time dependent on a world that supplies structures, images, symbols, and narratives.

  • Gender and class in urban transport: the cases of Xian and Hanoi
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Environment and Urbanization. - : SAGE Publications. - 0956-2478 .- 1746-0301. ; 22:1, s. 139-155
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents empirical findings of a study on the mobility situation of people of different gender, age and class in two residential areas each in two fast-growing Asian cities with high rates of motorization, Xian in China and Hanoi in Vietnam. Notable class and gender differences in travel patterns were found in both cities. Respondents in the old and poorer residential areas walk more, while better-off respondents in the new areas use motorized transport modes (car and motorbikes) to a greater extent. The main difference in travel modes between the areas in both cities is that non-motorized modes are used as a necessary means of travel for less well-off people in the old areas, while residents in the new (and better-off areas) can choose to switch to motorized modes for longer distance trips. Further class difference can be found in Hanoi in the use of buses and in Xian in the use of cars. The study found that the differences in travel patterns between women and men are similar to those found between the residents of poor and affluent areas: women walk more and men are more motorized. The study also confirms that in both Xian and Hanoi, despite women’s high rates of participation in the labour market, men still predominate in livelihood-related transport tasks whereas women are more involved in household-related transport tasks.

  • The Nordic Paradox. Professionals' Discussions about Gender Equality and Intimate Partner Violence against Women in Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Women & Criminal Justice. - : Routledge. - 0897-4454 .- 1541-0323. ; 32:5, s. 431-453
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) is a global public health issue often assumed to be associated with gender inequality. The so-called Nordic Paradox, the apparently contradictory co-existence of high levels of IPVAW and of gender equality in Nordic countries, has not been adequately explained. This study explores discussions about how this apparent paradox can be understood among 30 IPVAW professionals working in southern Sweden, through a thematic analysis of focus groups and individual and paired interviews. The analysis highlights complexities of gender (in)equality and its links with IPVAW in Sweden, of relevance for the addressing and prevention of IPVAW.
