  • "We are only women here" : Women as norm for leadership
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Engendering Leadership Through Research and Practice. - 9781740521796 ; , s. 398-406
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Feminist organizational research on women in leadership positions has largely focused on women managers, and their terms in male dominated work environments. The gender structuring in these organizations correspond with the gender order in society with male domination on positions of power and the majority of women in positions with less power. This study explores how the majority position affects women leaders workplace experiences and sense of belongingness in organizations. It also examines how women managers negotiate meanings of gender and leadership when they find themselves in majority at positions of power. Results suggest that the majority position opens up various ways of challenging and transforming prevailing male constructions of leadership. The managers do not have to relate to pre existing notions of leadership. Women constitute the norm in the organization in the sense that it is the things they do at work that constitutes leadership. They enjoy having power to shape the organization and they are constructed as competent managers. Moreover, they do not perceive themselves as part of a gendered category as managers. At the same time however, women’s subordination in gender power relations in society affects the social constructions of gender identity. Men in the organization are highly valued and the women managers strive to increase their numbers.

  • 'I can play!' : Young children's perceptions of health
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Pediatric Rehabilitation. - London : Taylor & Francis. - 1363-8491 .- 1464-5270. ; 9:3, s. 275-284
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Health is today viewed as a multi-dimensional concept partly conceptualized independent from not being ill. The aim of this study was to gain knowledge of how young children perceive health. Interviews were conducted with 68 children (4–5 years), within their pre-school setting, with the help of a semi-structured interview guide. A multi-dimensional perspective represented by the health dimensions of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) was used in a manifest deductive content analysis. The children's statements were categorized and placed under one of the four health dimensions, body, activity, participation and environment. A latent content analysis was applied to identify underlying themes in the manifest categories. The results revealed that young children perceive health as a multi-dimensional construct, largely related to being engaged, i.e. to be able to perform wanted activities and participate in a supportive every-day context. This implies that improvements of child engagement should be emphasized in health promotion and to a greater extent be the central focus of health interventions for young children.

  • Swedish preschool children show interest and are involved in the future of the world : Children’s voices must influence education for sustainable development (ESD)
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: The contribution of early childhood education to a sustainable society. - Paris : UNESCO, Paris.
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Swedish preschools, full day offers for children aged 1-6 years, have a long tradition of outdoor education and a curriculum that specifies goals concerning the environment, the nature and democratic values. The National Curriculum especially stresses the importance of children’s influence in the daily activities and the task to promote gender equity for girls and boys and for the teachers. In this article we will first tell about the specific task for Swedish pre-schools as it is stated in the national curriculum. Then we will describe a theme based project about life, hens and eggs from Långvik’s pre-school outside Stockholm, Sweden, and a research project with a gender perspective on out-door education from Mälardalen University. Finally, we point out the very important role teachers’ play and thus suggest reformed Teacher Education Programmes incorporating questions linked to education for sustainable development and to the importance of children’s influence and participation.

  • Supervisor experiences of supervising nursing staff in the care of older people
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nursing Management. - : Hindawi Limited. - 0966-0429 .- 1365-2834. ; 16:7, s. 876-882
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim To describe supervisors’ experiences of supervising nursing staff who care for older people in order to develop an understanding of the opportunities and limitations involved in supervision. Background Little is known of what group supervision of nursing staff means for the supervisor, particularly in regards to care of the old. Methods A reflective life-world research approach, based upon phenomenological epistemonology was used. Two supervisors with 2 years experience of supervising nursing staff caring for older people were interviewed. Conclusions Results point to the need for support for supervisors in order to enable them to develop their supervisory abilities and skills. Implications for nursing management Support is of crucial importance for both the ability to supervise and the quality of supervision.

  • A comparison of curricular approaches of care of the aged in Swedish and US nursing programs
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Nurse Education in Practice. - : Elsevier BV. - 1471-5953 .- 1873-5223. ; 7:6, s. 358-364
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In an era of global aging, the steady increase in older people in Sweden and the United States is having a direct effect on nursing practice, presenting unprecedented opportunities and challenges in nursing education. The aim of this study was to highlight differences and similarities in curricular approaches to care of aged in Swedish and US baccalaureate nursing programs. The Swedish response rate was 100% (N=26); the US response rate was 36% (N=202). The results, which compare curricula approaches, have implications for nursing education in Sweden and the United States. Both include stand-alone and integrated courses on care of the aged, geriatrics and gerontology. Differences are noted in the percentage of programs that include care of the age in their curricula and the clinical education settings. Results of this study add to the sparse body of knowledge of cross-cultural nursing research on curricular approaches to geriatrics and gerontology, high-light similarities and differences in nursing education in two countries and invite dialogue among nurse educators. Future research is needed to address curricular issues on the aged population and cross cultural perspectives.

  • Content of and attitudes towards an intervention program. School administrators’ and students perceptions
  • 2007
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of the study is to examine how one administration in a school with above average national test results works to reduce student behavior problems and promote a functional environment in one English speaking school in Stockholm, Sweden. The methods used are a case study of one school with interviews and a questionnaire. The grades the students received were compared to the national average and the school environment for the students and administration was reviewed. The results are based on the relationship between a strong administration and a positive school environment as described by the participants. Finally the interventions realized in that school were contrasted with the interventions outlined and suggested in the current literature. The conclusion is that the research done for this study suggests that there is a relationship between a strong administration and children performing well on standardized tests. It also suggests that both the students and the administration, under these circumstances, feel good about school.

  • Municipal Night Nurses’ Experience of the Meaning of Caring
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nursing Ethics. - : SAGE Publications. - 0969-7330 .- 1477-0989. ; 16:5, s. 599-612
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to elucidate municipal night registered nurses’ (RNs) experiences of the meaning of caring in nursing. The research context involved all night duty RNs working in municipal care of older people in a medium-sized municipality located in central Sweden. The meaning of caring in nursing was experienced as: caring for by advocacy, superior responsibility in caring, and consultative nursing service. The municipal night RNs’ experience of caring is interpreted as meanings in paradoxes: ‘being close at distance’, the condition of ‘being responsible with insignificant control’, and ‘being interdependently independent’. The RNs’ experience of the meaning of caring involves focusing on the care recipient by advocating their perspectives. The meaning of caring in this context is an endeavour to grasp an overall caring responsibility by responding tovocational and personal demands regarding the issue of being a RN, in guaranteeing ethical, qualitative and competent care for older people.

  • Reflective Practice in Nursing Care : embedded assumptions in qualitative studies
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Nursing Practice. - 1322-7114 .- 1440-172X. ; 13:3, s. 151-160
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Qualitative nursing researchers have long recognized that reflective practice (RP) seems to be a valuable tool in nursing care. The aim of the present meta-study was to analyse current qualitative research on RP in nursing care, in order to create and synthesize the knowledge and the understanding of registered nurses' RP. Using a meta-study synthesis approach, embedded assumptions were identified in qualitative studies that have influenced the way researchers have interpreted and made sense of RP in nursing care. Despite empirical focus in research on RP in nursing care, it was found that assumptions about RP were predominantly based on theory. The reflective movement within the practice of nursing care has mainly a constructivist epistemology, based on learning from experience. The individual nurse's RP capability is essential in providing and improving ethical and holistic nursing care

  • To both be like a captain and fellow worker of the caring team : the meaning of Nurse Assistants' expectations of Registered Nurses in Swedish residential care homes
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Older People Nursing. - : Wiley. - 1748-3735 .- 1748-3743. ; 3:1, s. 35-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim. To describe the expectations of and to illuminate the meaning of the Nurse Assistants' (NA) expectations of Registered Nurses (RN) who are responsible for the care of older people living in residential care homes in Sweden. Background. Older people in Sweden who are provided with residential care are extremely frail and incapable of independent living. Therefore, when providing care, RN and NA encounter older people who require a great deal of care. An important precondition for the provision of satisfactory care is to have adequate collaboration between NAs and RNs and their expectations of each other. In this paper, the focus is on the NAs expectations of the RNs. Method. The study is based on a qualitative approach and a phenomenological-hermeneutical method. Ten NAs were interviewed and asked to narrate as freely as possible, about their expectations of RNs. The narratives were audio taped and transcribed verbatim. The analytical process includes the following steps; naïve reading, structural analysis, comprehensive understanding and reflection. Results. The RNs were expected to take responsibility for being fellow human beings and experts in providing care as well as always available to participate in caring. The RNs were expected to make stand-alone decisions and create a sense of safety for both older people and the NAs and have the courage to work alone and create a safe environment for both the older people and the NAs. The meaning of these expectations was that the RNs are like a captain in providing care, but at the same time, fellow workers. Conclusion. When the RNs do not meet the NAs expectations, there is a risk of conflict and therefore also a risk that an unsafe environment being created when caring for older people.
