  • Innovation Management System Legitimacy Emergence – A Process Perspective
  • 2024
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines an organization’s adoption of a standard based innovation management system (IMS) to systematize and lead its innovation efforts. The organization, a large public hospital, characterized as an early implementor of the standard based IMS approach to innovation management, was analyzed during a fouryear time span via a longitudinal study. The paper utilizes components of neo institutional theory as a lens to explain the empirical findings, adopting a legitimacy-as-a-process perspective to trace how the IMS system became a legitimate approach to innovation management, through institutional work. By analyzing the organization from its initial planning to its implementation of the system, the paper presents an order of legitimizing an innovation management system.

  • Integrating a national risk assessment into a disaster risk management system : Process and practice
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction. - : Elsevier BV. - 2212-4209. ; 27, s. 625-631
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The national risk assessment (NRA) has recently become a very important component in a country's disaster risk management (DRM) system. The NRA aims to identify threats and hazards that could affect the entire country, and assess their potential likelihood and impacts from a national perspective. Compared to other DRM activities, NRA work is comparatively new, and is often a response to an external demand. For instance, in the European Union (EU), most member states initiated their NRA process in response to a EU directive. This article investigates how the requirement to conduct a NRA has influenced an existing DRM system, taking the case of Sweden as a study case. Specifically, it examines how the NRA process has been integrated into the multi-stakeholder, multi-level, bottom-up Swedish DRM system. Empirical data were collected through 21 semi-structured interviews with representatives from 13 national authorities, supplemented by Swedish and EU documentation. The results were analyzed following the ISO 31000 risk assessment process. The findings provide an indication of how NRA work has been integrated into ongoing DRM activities, and the level of integration. The results also indicate the extent of stakeholder involvement in the NRA process, the quality of DRM information communication among stakeholders, how the NRA has been implemented in the Swedish context, and the potential to expand the NRA worldwide.

  • A Fair Distribution of Responsibility for Climate Adaptation-Translating Principles of Distribution from an International to a Local Context
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Philosophies. - : MDPI AG. - 2409-9287. ; 6:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Distribution of responsibility is one of the main focus areas in discussions about climate change ethics. Most of these discussions deal with the distribution of responsibility for climate change mitigation at the international level. The aim of this paper is to investigate if and how these principles can be used to inform the search for a fair distribution of responsibility for climate change adaptation on the local level. We found that the most influential distribution principles on the international level were in turn built on one or more of seven basic principles: (P1) equal shares, (P2) desert, (P3) beneficiary pays, (P4) ability, (P5) self-help, (P6) limited responsibility for the worst off, and (P7) status quo preservation. It was found that all the basic principles, but P1, P3, and P7, are to some extent translatable to local climate adaptation. Two major problems hamper their usefulness on the local level: (1) several categories of agents need to take on responsibility; and (2) emissions do not work as a base for all principles. P4, P5, and P6 are applicable to local adaptation without changes. P4 is of particular importance as it seems to solve the first problem. P2 is applicable only if the second problem is solved, which can be achieved by using risk of harm instead of emissions as the basis for desert.

  • Conflicts in everyday life : The influence of competing goals on domestic energy conservation
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI. - 2071-1050. ; 7:5, s. 5963-5980
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A common approach for understanding people's domestic energy behavior is to study the influence of deterministic factors, such as attitudes, norms and knowledge, on behavior. However, few studies have succeeded in fully explaining people's behavior based on these factors alone. To further the understanding of people's everyday energy use, a goal-oriented approach based on activity theory has been applied to discuss energy conservation from a multiple goal perspective based on the findings from an interview study with 42 informants. The findings show that the informants used energy to fulfill goals linked to basic needs or desires related to their well-being. Even though the majority of informants had an explicit goal to reduce their energy consumption, many experienced conflicts with other competing goals, which often made energy conservation undesirable or challenging. The findings suggest that actions to reduce energy use will most often not be prioritized if they cannot be integrated into people's daily life without jeopardizing their possibilities to achieve their primary goals and satisfy their everyday needs. It is thus vital to consider people's everyday life and the many conflicts they experience when aiming to understand why people do, or do not, prioritize energy conservation during everyday activities. © 2015 by the authors;

  • Design for sustainable consumption behaviour : Systematising the use of behavioural intervention strategies
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: DPPI'11 - Designing Pleasurable Products and Interfaces, Proceedings. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. - 9781450312806 ; , s. 19-26
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It has been well debated if user centred design, UCD, can actually lead to innovation. This paper discusses the case of sustainable innovation, specifically addressing the development of solutions to influence users' resource consumption behaviour. The approach presented, suggests how knowledge on user actions and habits in a resource consumption situation can be used in the product development process in combination with systematised behavioural intervention strategies to facilitate the creation of innovative solutions aiming to motivate resource efficient everyday actions. The Design for Sustainable Consumption Behaviour-approach, defined through a combination of UCD-methodology, studies of user consumption behaviour and categorised behavioural intervention strategies, explores how systematised knowledge within the domains can be applicable in an industry context to stimulate innovative solutions supporting actions for a decreased consumption of resources. The DSCB-approach can be regarded as an exploratory tool, which has the potential to help companies to integrate a behavioural perspective within their existing product development processes by providing guidance and an overview of available intervention strategies. To illustrate the use of the approach and conduct a first evaluation of the applicability, this paper reports on an explanatory case study carried out at IKEA of Sweden. The innovative results and outcomes of the case study suggest that the approach has potential to bring forth sustainable innovations. However, the presented approach should be developed further and tested through additional research before further conclusions can be drawn.

  • Designed to support or impede energy conservation? How design characteristics influence people’s energy use
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Design Research. - : Inderscience Publishers. - 1569-1551 .- 1748-3050. ; 15:1, s. 43-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores how the design of domestic appliances influences people’s energy use during everyday activities. Drawing on findings from an interview study with 81 informants, a variety of design characteristics were uncovered, which set preconditions for use that in different ways impede or support energy conservation. The identified characteristics did not only concern appliances’ operative functions but also their interactive and communicative functions as well as people’s underlying motives for using specific appliances. Addressing the full range of characteristics during the development of new appliances will highlight a variety of design opportunities and increase the possibilities for developing appliances that support people to go about their everyday activities in less energy-reliant ways.

  • Using product innovation as eco-branding to encourage sustainable lifestyles - An exploratory student approach to business strategy
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: DS 69. ; , s. 337-342, s. 337-342
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recently, new market demands and customer expectations have forced companies to expand their commitment to sustainability and to offer new eco-friendly solutions. It is therefore of increasing importance for companies to expand their product portfolio with new sustainable and innovative designs. New product solutions have the ability to change how we as individuals live and use resources in our everyday life. This offers great opportunities for companies and designers to use creative technology innovation as a tool to promote new sustainable lifestyles. This paper discusses the challenge of using product innovation as eco-branding and how an exploratory approach to this has been used in a number of student projects. Based on in-depth analyses of different brands and their existing products, students created ten new brand, product and service concepts. The sustainability aspect was particularly stressed both in the created concepts and in the accompanying business and brand strategies. In the paper, we report on the overall description of the project as well as the overall results. Finally, we will describe one case in more detail and discuss the project approach in regards to the actual result and contribution to the student learning experience and insight on eco-branding.

  • 2019
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Access to good quality water in sufficient quantity is essential for people’s everyday life and for most businesses and economic sectors. However, water scarcity and drought are emerging as some of the most important global risks to society with both short-term and long-term effects on people, ecosystem services, biodiversity and the economic activities that depend on a reliable water supply. This is a global problem, and Sweden is not spared. The low precipitation and high summer temperatures that hit Sweden for three consecutive years between 2016 and 2018, caused a vastly reduced access to water and led to major consequences for the Swedish society. In most Swedish regions, however, there is usually more than enough water to meet the growing needs of society and at the same time maintain a good environmental status even during drought. But to ensure a long-term sustainable water supply, all parties, i.e. households, water-dependent businesses and authorities, need to take measures. Drought and water scarcity are challenges that do not only affect, or can be solved by, the municipal drinking water supply. Each and everyone who uses and is dependent on water, regardless of whether the water is supplied through public or private systems, is part of the problem and should therefore also be part of the solutions. This report provides information and material to help companies contribute to a better water situation in areas with low water availability. The report describes the water usage and water availability in Sweden today and how they are expected to change in the future. Incentives and driving forces for water savings are described as well as methods for identifying inefficient water usage and improvement measures. A review of studies from various countries provides information on challenges as well as good examples of water scarcity mitigation measures in various economic sectors. Examples of decision support methods that can be used to evaluate and prioritize between alternative measures are also described. Finally, potential implementation barriers are discussed and examples of policy instruments which can facilitate implementation of beneficial measures are given.

  • A topological approach to Mobility as a Service: A proposed tool for understanding requirements and effects, and for aiding the integration of societal goals
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 1st International Conference on Mobility as a Service (ICoMaaS), Tampere, Finland, November 28-29, 2017. ; , s. 187-201, s. 187-201
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the concept of MaaS and what characterizes a ‘MaaS service’, as well as to propose a topology of MaaS as a tool for facilitating the discussion of MaaS, enabling the ‘comparison of’ different services, understanding MaaS’ potential effects, and aiding the integration of societal goals into MaaS services. Based on a literature review analyzing existing definitions, and an expert workshop identifying key aspects and ascertaining service differentiations accordingly, the resulting proposed topology consists of MaaS Levels 0 to 4 as characterized by different types of integration: 0 no integration; 1 integration of information; 2 integration of booking and payment; 3 integration of the service offer, including contracts and responsibilities; 4 integration of societal goals. The levels are described in terms of their added value and further discussed regarding implications for business, society, users, and technical requirements. Then, a deeper discussion also delves into the potential in expanding upon Level 4 and ways by which services and societal goals can become more fully integrated. The proposed topology adds clarity to the discussion of such a trending topic and enables the positioning of services along the MaaS spectrum. It also deepens the understanding of why MaaS can take time to establish, and can help support the development of action plans in terms of what needs to be done depending on what type of MaaS one wants to develop. Further analysis is desirable regarding the possibilities and problems linked with the different levels of MaaS. Such an analysis is key to understanding which effects can be achieved via the implementation of different levels of MaaS services in terms of e.g. social, economic and ecological sustainability, and business potential.
