  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Socialmedicinsk Tidskrift. - : Stiftelsen Socialmedicinsk Tidskrift. - 0037-833X .- 2000-4192. ; 96:4, s. 558-573
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Lessons Learned from Teaching Nursing Students about Equality, Equity, Human Rights, and Forced Migration through Roleplay in an Inclusive Classroom
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - Basel : MDPI. - 2071-1050. ; 12:17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inclusive education, sustainable development, and core nursing values all share common goals of promoting diversity, equity, social justice, and inclusion. However, prevailing norms of exclusion may shape health systems and healthcare workers’ attitudes and threaten inclusive patient care. Ongoing global conflicts and violence resulting in growing patient diversity in terms of ethnicity and migration status have led to questions regarding healthcare systems’ preparedness for inclusive nursing. Diversity-rich classrooms and collaborative learning methods, like role play, are inclusive strategies that may be useful in nursing education. The purpose of this paper is to present lessons learned from incorporating role play about forced migration in inclusive nursing classrooms. Various diversity-rich nursing student groups participated in a two-hour role play on forced migration facilitated by youth volunteers from the Swedish Red Cross Society between 2017 and 2019. This study is based on the amplified analysis of qualitative data materials, in the form of notes and summarized feedbacks, obtained from evaluating the role play as a teaching-learning activity. Three themes were identified, specifically, knowledge exchange, existential reflections, and empathy evoked. Findings suggest that working collaboratively in an inclusive environment may improve nursing students’ understanding of the vulnerabilities created by forced migration and to be better prepared for promoting social justice for this group in health care settings.

  • Teaching human rights, equality and equity in a Nursing education : Teachers’ encounters with students’ existential preparedness in relation to access to healthcare for people with precarious migration status
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Existential Medical Humanities 7-8 of November 2019 Arranged by the Centre for Studies in Practical Knowledge, Södertörn University.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Existentialism in nursing is often discussed in terms of diagnoses and end-of-life and rarely from the perspective of inequalities and equitable access to healthcare. The nursing profession is known for advocacy especially for improved patients’ rights and safety. Some core ethical values of the Swedish Society of Nursing include respect for patients’ dignity, integrity, autonomy in decision making and respect for the vulnerable. Furthermore, nurses should help patients experience trust, hope and meaning in encounters with healthcare systems. At the Swedish Red Cross University, “Health, equality and human rights” is a module in a mandatory second term course. The intended learning outcomes (ILOs) are to explain public health goals, policy documents, fundamental human rights, ethics and their applications in health context. One of the teaching/learning activities is an educational drama (ED) led by the Youth wing of the Swedish Red Cross Society. It’s a two-hour role-play depicting common pre-flight and during-flight experiences of families and individual victims of forced migration (VOFM). Participants make tough decisions like emptying savings, trusting strangers for the difficult journey or which child to send first. At the “migration office” they must prove their identity and story. They may experience families split at borders, being duped of their savings or sent back to country of origin. Using ED promotes teamwork, negotiation, socialization, aids recall of what has been taught and stimulates student’s imagination and empathy for situations that might seem distant. This scholarly presentation is based on the evaluation of ED as a pedagogical approach. Evaluations consistently show positive outcomes in line with the ILOs, however, teachers also notice how the ED tends to stimulate existential reflections during each session. These are presented here using Sartre’s existential concepts of human freedom/responsibility, choice, aguish, bad faith, and authenticity. Concurrent reflections of the other (i.e. VOFM) and self, first as an individual and secondly as future nurses encountering VOFMs (Sartre’s existence precedes essence), are common. The VOFM’s burden of responsibility, pursuit of freedom and anguish following various choices appear to stimulate existential concerns in relation to privileges taken for granted in Sweden. An example is access to healthcare as an obvious right, in contrast to a continuum of suffering for VOFMs (tough experiences pre/during-flight, discrimination and limited access to healthcare after arriving in Sweden). The restrictive healthcare policy for people with precarious migration status in Sweden and its challenging implementation are often woven into the discussions. Dimensions of bad faith and authenticity are raised, followed by a shift in perspective accepting healthcare for all. The need for nurses (including themselves as future nurses) to be more knowledgeable about health provisions for VOFMs and for policies enduring equitable access to healthcare for VOFMs are reiterated (Sartre’s “representatives of humanity”).To conclude, the workshop stimulates existential preparedness in students which aligns with nursing ethical codes e.g. social justice, advocacy, good nursing care to alleviate suffering and constant reflections to challenge own values and beliefs. We argue that this existential preparedness to deal with inequality in health is just as important as the existential thoughts discussed through the lens of diagnoses and end of life care.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Socialmedicinsk Tidskrift. - : Socialmedicinsk tidskrift. - 0037-833X .- 2000-4192. ; 98:4, s. 554-560

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Socialmedicinsk Tidskrift. - Stockholm : Socialmedicinsk tidskrift. - 0037-833X .- 2000-4192. ; 98:4, s. 671-683
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Personality and learning styles in relation to attitudes towards interprofessional education : a cross-sectional study on undergraduate medical students during their clinical courses
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: BMC Medical Education. - : BioMed Central. - 1472-6920. ; 20:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Interprofessional Education (IPE) is now included in curricula in universities worldwide. It is known that there are differences in attitudes towards IPE among students, but less is known regarding how students' personalities and learnings styles correspond with those attitudes. The aim of this study was to investigate whether personality traits and learning styles have any impact on medical students' attitudes towards IPE.METHODS: Seventy nine medical students in their 9th term (63% females, mean age 29 years) were questioned regarding their attitudes towards IPE according to the Interdisciplinary Education Perception Scale questionnaire, the Kolb's learning style and Big Five Inventory questionnaires. For all three instruments we used the Swedish translated versions.RESULTS: When investigated with a logistic regression, adjusting for age and gender, there were no significant associations between Big Five inventory, Kolb's learning style and IEPS, except for the Reflective-Pragmatic learning style that was moderately associated with a higher IEPS score.CONCLUSION: There was no clear correlation between personality, learning style and attitude towards IPE as measured by the IEPS among medical students in our study population. Further investigations would benefit from a combination of qualitative and quantitative design.

  • Becoming a global nurse : A thematic and interpretive analysis of bachelor's theses at the Swedish Red Cross University College
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nordic journal of nursing research. - : Sage Publications. - 2057-1585 .- 2057-1593.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The overall purpose of this study was to initiate the process of developing a comprehensive theoretical framework associating the three entities defining the Swedish Red Cross University College (SRCUC): global nursing, global health and Red Cross and Red Crescent's perspective (RCRC). To do so, an analysis of nursing bachelor's theses over two periods (2011–2012 and 2015–2016) was initially needed to capture the academic essence. Two specific aims were defined: 1) To describe how global nursing and global health, in conjunction with the RCRC perspective, were addressed and contextualized in nursing bachelor's theses; and 2) To investigate how students’ knowledge in global awareness and vision has developed over time. Two overarching themes were identified: Conceptualizing caring relations and moving towards the body of global awareness and Understanding the art of nursing and ethics in complex nursing actions. The Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research (SRQR) guidelines were used to ensure the trustworthiness of the findings. By promoting relevant knowledge, the SRCUC prepares future nurses for upcoming health needs at the planetary level.

  • A sisyphean task : experiences of perfectionism in patients with eating disorders
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Eating Disorders. - : BioMed Central. - 2050-2974. ; 5:3, s. 1-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Despite the theoretical links between eating disorders and perfectionism, the definition of perfectionismin practice is complicated. The present study explored descriptions and experiences of perfectionism described by atransdiagnostic sample of patients. Methods: In-depth, semi-structured interviews were carried out with 15 patients. The interviews were analyzed byThematic Analysis. A comparison between the patients’ scorings on the Eating Disorder Inventory-Perfectionism scalewas also performed. Results: Seven themes were found: The origins of perfectionism, Top performance, Order and self-control, A perfectbody, Looking good in the eyes of others, A double-edged coping strategy, and A Sisyphean task. The women inthis study did not emphasize weight and body as the main perfectionistic strivings. Core descriptions were instead order,self-control and top performances. All of the participants described the awareness of reaching perfectionismas impossible. Scorings of self-oriented perfectionism was significantly higher compared to socially prescribedperfectionism. No differences in the narratives related to perfectionism scores or eating disorder diagnoseswere found. Conclusions: The results showed that psychometric measures do not always capture the patients’ definitionsof perfectionism, but regarding that perfectionism serves as a means to regulate affects and may lead into anexacerbation of the eating disorder, and the development of obsessive-compulsive symptoms, it is importantto investigate the personal definitions of perfectionism.

  • Perfectionism and sense of coherence among patients with eating disorders
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Psychiatry. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 0803-9488 .- 1502-4725. ; 68:6, s. 409-415
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: There is a substantial body of research on eating disorders and perfectionism. Also there are several studies on eating disorders and sense of coherence (SOC), but studies regarding all three subjects are sparse. Perfectionism and the degree of SOC are considered central and aggravating aspects of psychiatric conditions, not least in relation to eating disorders. Aims: The present study aimed to describe the relationship between perfectionism as operationalized by Garner in the Eating Disorder Inventory-2 and SOC as defined by Antonovsky in the SOC-29 scale. The hypothesis was that SOC should be negatively associated with perfectionism. Methods: Data from the two self-measuring instruments collected from 95 consecutively recruited eating disorder outpatients were analysed with descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The patients in the present study scored consistently with other Swedish eating disorder samples on the Perfectionism subscale in the Eating Disorder Inventory-2 (EDI-P) and on the SOC-29, indicating a higher degree of perfectionism and weaker SOC than normal population groups. Perfectionism was significantly correlated to SOC. The correlation was negative, confirming the study hypothesis. The hypothesis was further confirmed in a subgroup analysis comparing patients with different degrees of SOC related to their EDI-P scores. Conclusions: Perfectionism is associated with SOC in patients with eating disorders. Clinical implications: The clinical implications derived from the study could be a recommendation to focus on the SOC in patients with an eating disorder with the hope of lowering the patients’ perfectionism as well.
