  • Influence of transaction costs and Governance in the marketing of organic pineapples from Uganda
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sustainable Development. - : Canadian Center of Science and Education. - 1913-9063 .- 1913-9071. ; 11, s. 194-211
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The organic pineapple sub-sector in Uganda has existed for slightly over 10 years. Whereas the sub-sector targets the organic market, slightly more than half of the organic pineapples produced by farmers are sold in this market and the rest is sold to the conventional market. This study aimed at determining the transaction costs that limit the amount of organic pineapples sold by farmers to the organic market. The study also aimed at establishing the relationship between the transaction costs and governance of the transactions between farmers and exporters. Data were collected from 140 organic pineapple farmers and seven organic pineapple export companies. Qualitative methods and econometric methods were used in data analysis. Findings show that there were high asset specificity and uncertainty in organic transactions, which resulted into farmers selling only a proportion of their produce to exporters. Involving farmer in contract formulation, trust, distance to collection centers and high asset specificity increased the proportion of pineapple sold by the farmers while farmers’ experience reduced the proportion sold. There were three forms of governances between farmers and organic exporters; the captive, modular and relational governance. The relational governance had the highest transaction costs, and less proportion of organic pineapples were sold in this governance. The study recommends transaction cost reduction strategies such as organizing farmers in cooperatives, trust building and engaging farmers in contract formulation.

  • Institutions, production and transaction costs in the value chain of organic tomatoes and sweet peppers in tourist hotels, Unguja and Arusha
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Cogent Food & Agriculture. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2331-1932. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper was to evaluate production and transaction costs in organic tomatoes and sweet peppers value chain. The study was conducted in Arusha and Unguja. A preliminary survey was conducted in 2014, and then a stratified sampling procedure was used to select a sample of producers, tourist hoteliers and suppliers. The regions Arusha and Unguja were selected purposively and key informant interviews and snowballing sampling procedures were also used. The Heckman's procedure was used to analyze factors affecting the probability and extent of participation in tomatoes and sweet peppers markets. The probit results from the Heckman's two-stage process show that ownership of assets such as storage facilities, transportation assets and being under contract farming or farmers cooperatives increased the probability of market participation, while the heckit results (OLS corrected for selectivity bias) shows that experience in marketing increased the quantities of tomatoes and sweet peppers marketed while high marketing costs such as mobile phone costs decreased the quantities of tomatoes and sweet peppers marketed. Organic producers' cooperatives and collective marketing strategies are the possible solutions to reduce transaction costs, improve access to the tourism market, and increasing shelf life by having collective storage facilities and transport. Policy changes that will ensure producers sell under cooperatives and collective marketing strategies should be implemented to improve producers' market access.

  • Reconsidering Media Discourses on Food Crisis from a Quantitative Perspective
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Food Products Marketing. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1045-4446 .- 1540-4102. ; 23, s. 398-415
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2007–2008, when food prices started to increase dramatically, purchasing power parity of consumers, especially the urban poor, started to decrease automatically. High food prices were argued to cause poverty, hunger, and food riots among urban populations. Henceforward, “food crisis” became a new storyline in the current debate. In contrast, in the pre-2007 period, when rural farmers had been facing negative welfare effects of low food prices for many years, there were no crisis talks. This article analyzes different media coverage of urban consumers and rural producers under changes in relative incomes for the 2000–2013 period and propounds media bias on the food crisis debate by using content analysis and the OLS regression model.

  • Tracing Uganda's global primary organic pineapple value chain
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: African Crop Science Journal. - : African Journals Online (AJOL). - 1021-9730 .- 2072-6589. ; 24, s. 15-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The organic sector is one of the fastest growing sectors globally. The sector provides an opportunity for developing countries to export high value products in the global market. One such opportunity for Uganda is the export of organic pineapples. The organic pineapple enterprise is relatively new, having existed for approximately 10 years. This paper traces the organic pineapple value chain, characterises and explains the functions of the actors in the chain. The study used the Global Value Chain Analysis Framework, using data obtained from 140 organic farmers, 10 exporters and 3 support institutions in Uganda. It is clear from the study that the chain is private- sector-driven, has relatively young smallholder farmers, and comprises of 10 small scale export companies. Only 45% of the organic pineapples produced by farmers reach the organic consumers. Reasons for this included limited processing capacity of exporters, competition from conventional buyers and the few local organic consumers. Other reasons were declining soil fertility, limited regulative institutional support and poor infrastructure. We recommend increased use of soil amendments, favourable legislations and investment environment, increased horizontal coordination among exporters and increasing the range of the organic export products in order to increase organic pineapple sales.
