  • Ett könsperspektiv på resor i arbetet
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Arbetsmarknad och arbetsliv.. - Karlstad : Karlstads universitet, Arbetsvetenskap. - 1400-9692. ; 14:2, s. 29-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Occupation, gender and work-life exits: a Swedish population study
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Ageing & Society. - 0144-686X .- 1469-1779. ; 38:7, s. 1332-1349
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study was undertaken in order to examine the differences between occupations in the Swedish labour market with respect to the risk for men and women of leaving working life prematurely. The project was carried out as a population study employing methodology used in demographics to predict life length at birth. Here, calculations of expected remaining work-life length were based on the exits from working life. The study was based on the Swedish national labour statistics, covering all employees who had an occupational definition in 2006 and who were in the age range 35–64 years during the study period 2007–2010. There was a clear socio-economic divide in exit patterns, comparing blue- and white-collar jobs. The differences between the highest and the lowest risk jobs exceeded 4.5 years among both men and women. In the blue-collar occupational groups there were 50 per cent or less ‘survivors’ still working at age 65; in many white-collar occupations there were more than 60 per cent. Men and women exited working life at the same age. Compared to a similar study carried out in 2006, the same socio-economic pattern prevails, but people now work longer in almost all occupations. Women exited working life 0.8 years earlier than men in 2006; this difference is now gone.

  • Postfeminism as Coping Strategy : Understandings of Gender and Intragroup Conflict among Swedish Welfare Workers
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: NORA. - : Routledge. - 0803-8740 .- 1502-394X. ; 31:1, s. 76-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores how workers in the women-dominated public sectorin Sweden speak about and make sense of gender and intragroup conflictand the consequences of this way of thinking and acting for genderequality at work. Using qualitative interviews with 26 first-level managersand employees, we introduce an analytical framework that employs criticaldiscourse psychology and the conceptualization of a postfeministsensibility at work. We identified three competing meanings (postfeministstorylines) of gender and intragroup conflict: Supporting the genderedmeanings of conflict, Unawareness of conflict’s gendered meanings andCounteracting the gendered meanings of conflict. The welfare workersacknowledged the role of gender in intragroup conflicts but, paradoxically, constructed their own workplaces as gender neutral, withoutinequalities related to gender. We interpret these three postfeminist storylinesas coping strategies; that is, as ways to make sense of the falsepromise of gender egalitarianism that characterizes the Swedish labourmarket.

  • Collective agreement as investment in women in the Swedish Armed Forces : A critical discourse analysis
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Gender Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0958-9236 .- 1465-3869. ; 31:3, s. 364-376
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How organizations engage with gender equality is crucial to them being perceived as fair and attractive employers. As recruitment and training of personnel is a core function of the military organization, it is relevant to investigate this from a gender critical perspective. The aim was to critically examine how a military organization operates in respect of equality of pay between women and men by means of a collective agreement, as an example of how the organization tries to address gender inequality. A qualitative analysis using Bacchi's 'What is the problem represented to be' (2009) analysis of policy documents was conducted. The analysis focuses on how the actual issue is problematized and what is left unproblematised, and the key findings are that efforts to achieve gender equality within the Swedish Armed Forces are counterproductive and result in perpetuating deficiencies in the organization's work with wider gender-equality issues. Despite external pressures, there is a structural reluctance and inability within the Swedish Armed Forces to seriously engage with addressing the organization's gender-equality issues. As resistance to gender-equality work is usually implicit, this study's strongest contribution to the field is that such resistance can be identified as being explicit and therefore more easily challenged.

  • Precarity, Hospitality, and the Becoming of a Subject That Matters : A Study of Syrian Refugees in Lebanese Tented Settlements
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Organization Studies. - : SAGE Publications. - 0170-8406 .- 1741-3044. ; 43:5, s. 669-697
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How is it possible to gain a sense that you have a voice and that your life matters when you have lost everything and live your life as a ‘displaced person’ in extreme precarity? We explore this question by examining the mundane everyday organizing practices of Syrian refugees living in tented settlements in Lebanon. Contrasting traditional empirical settings within organization studies where an already placed and mattering subject can be assumed, our context provides an opportunity to reveal how relations of recognition and mattering become constituted, and how subjects in precarious settings become enacted as such. Specifically, drawing on theories on the relational enactment of self and other, we show how material-discursive boundary-making and invitational practices – organizing a home, cooking and eating, and organizing a digital ‘home’ – function to enact relational host/guest subject positions. We also disclose how these guest/host relationalities create the conditions of possibility for the enactment of a subject that matters, and for the despair enacted in everyday precarious life to transform into ‘undefeated despair’.

  • Populism Without Borders : FIGURATIVE PUBLICS: CROWDS, PROTEST, AND DEMOCRATIC ANXIETIES
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: The Immanent Frame: Secularism, Religion, and the Public Sphere. - Brooklyn, New York : Social Science Research Council.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Unlike most other political notions, like democracy or authoritarianism, for example, there seems to exist no “ideal type” of populism, which also explains why the brand is almost as frequent on the left as on the right. This is also why the term invites ideological confusion. As established politicians and commentators grope for words in order to confront the unpleasant face of today’s political life, populism often comes in handy as their cri de guerre, naming an enemy against which we must mobilize democratic institutions, liberal values, and civic virtues. To be sure, such reactions are welcome and needed as a defense against the world’s Bolsonaros, Erdogans, Trumps, Modis, Salvinis, and Orbans. But are they sufficient? The rhetoric elicited by these authoritarian tendencies shows that populism is a label emerging from the embattled center of politics, and it usually warns against invasion by political outsiders. This is also to say that populism is a normative political concept, not a sociological or historical one. In order to grasp the antagonisms covered up by the discourse on populism we should, I suggest, relate it to two other categories that tend to crop up as the two opposite poles of this discourse: the fascist and the migrant. Both are, strangely, designations of “the popular,” but with contrasting relationships to political power. In what follows, I first trace these categories in contemporary political discourse and I then describe how they shape aesthetic imaginaries of “the people.”

  • Im/Mobility and Deportability in Transit: Lesvos Island, Greece, June 2015
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Tijdschrift voor Economische en Sociale Geografie. - : Wiley. - 0040-747X. ; 108:6, s. 879-884
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the course of the so-called ‘European refugee crisis’ hundreds and thousands of refugees have arrived to the Greek island of Lesvos. In order to obtain permission to leave the island, and thus continue their journeys towards northern Europe, arriving refugees first have to go through a registration process. During 2015, this registration resulted in refugees being given an ‘administrative deportation order,’ which de jure expelled the refugees from Greek territory but de facto allowed them to leave the island and continue their travels. This ‘administrative deportation order’ was therefore pursued by the arriving refugees as a ‘travel’ rather than ‘expulsion’ document. Following the experiences of a group of Syrian refugees in their endeavors to get registered and leave the island of Lesvos in June 2015, this paper illustrates how refugees actively navigate the systems that govern their (im)mobility – and how their alternative reading and usage of the administrative deportation order also has broader political consequences.
