  • The Political Economy of Land and Natural Resource Investments in Africa: An Analytical Framework
  • 2017
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Large-scale investments in natural resources (extractives as well as agriculture) can help transform African economies by accelerating economic growth, creating jobs and strengthening the links between local economies and the global economy more broadly. However, they often end up violating rights, which in turn may lead to social protests and political instability. This Working Paper develops an analytical framework for analysing the implementation of large-scale investments in natural resources. It focuses on the triangular relations between investors, local populations and ruling elites. The framework treats the outcomes of these triangular relationships as involving ‘reciprocal exchange deals’ between investors and local populations, ‘compatible interests’ between ruling elites and investors, and ‘productive social relations’ between local populations and ruling elites. We show that, in order to understand why some investments are implemented more successfully than others, it is necessary to grasp the politics behind an investment. The paper also explores the conditions under which investments can be implemented without violating the rights of local populations. The paper is based on a review of the relevant bodies of literature and is linked to ongoing empirical studies of large-scale natural resource investments in Mozambique, Tanzania and Uganda related to gas/oil, mining and agriculture.

  • Publication to Patent Analysis for Detecting Science & Technology Frontiers : The Case of Biofuels, Biochemicals and Biomaterials or Academic Lock-In is Not Necessarily Affecting Business Behavior
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper we apply large-scale review methodologies and introduce the PPA model - Publication to Patent Analysis ‑ in order to map recent developments in science and technology frontiers of biorefinery activities. Using a bibliometrical approach in the PPA model, we aim to detect and analyze scientific and technological trends in a potentially huge sector. This study takes on the challenge of closing the gap between two strands of analysis - publication analysis and a parallel patent analysis. Bibliometrics is used in order to provide the basis for identification of Science & Technology frontiers, i.e. clusters. Moreover, the data analysis can be used for probabilistic topic modelling of clusters created from publication and patent data. In the studies of knowledge transfer between science and technology this kind of approach has previously been applied only at the micro level. We provide a novel approach proposed for analyses of broader technology sectors which may support policymakers, R&D funding agencies as well as industrial management in the production of scientific and technological intelligence. In our case study results indicate that old forest industry nations in Europe (Austria, Germany, and Sweden) seem at best reactive and pragmatic leaning on their industrial specialization. In general, the EU countries are lagging behind when it comes to new and fast-growing science fields based on non-woody biomass materials and product fields and instead concentrated to more mature or slow-growing wood-based activities.

  • Empowering Children to Protect the Environment: The Story of Eklunden, Sweden
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: School of Blogal Studies.
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • “The forest is my happy place, the best place there is,” Aurora confides to a reporter for the local newspaper, Kungälvs-Posten. “I want Kungälv Municipality […] to think about the climate and our future and leave the forest alone,” she continues. Aurora is a seven-year-old resident of Ytterby, a town in Kungälv Municipality, Sweden. She is talking to the reporter in her struggle to save Eklunden, a small forest near her home. But Aurora is not alone. She is one of many local children fighting to save the forest. Some children have drawn pictures depicting their love for the forest; others have collected signatures on a petition demanding the local government stop plans for deforestation; at least one child has taken to social media to champion the cause. While numerous local residents have worked to raise awareness and maintain the forest, this post documents the perspectives of the children who demanded their right to democratic participation. Aurora co-authors the post to highlight her experience as a caretaker of the environment. In doing so, she hopes to empower other children to “speak their passion.”

  • Future of mobility systems in Nordic winter cities : exploring expert-based and context-driven imaginaries of sustainable mobility
  • 2023
  • Annan publikation (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • This article aims to contribute to the discussion about the future of sustainable mobility in Nordic winter cities. We share outcomes of an exploratory study of expert-based imaginaries and contrast them with context-driven imaginaries we found in Skellefteå, a quickly growing municipality in the north of Sweden. Such imaginaries reflect collectively held visions and expectations about the future, blending technological, social, cultural and economic dimensions. They are not individual perceptions of the future but rather are those shared collectively. On the way to sustainable and just mobility systems, it is important to identify and highlight diverse imaginaries coming from a variety of places and from different actor groups, especially those that are still overlooked and underrepresented in the mainstream debate. In this article, we draw attention to two context-driven imaginaries and show how they differ from those held by transport and mobility experts. By paying attention to diverse imaginaries, the current debate about future mobility systems can become more vibrant and inclusive. And, eventually, lead to the discovery of context-sensitive solutions for future mobility systems in the Northern regions and pathways towards them.

  • Urban sprawl på skånska? : om planeringsdebattens språkbruk och begreppens dolda landskap
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: LTV-fakultetens faktablad.
  • Annan publikation (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • För att främja en hållbar utveckling behöver dagens planerare lära av internationella exempel. Men hur?

  • Is there a ‘fit’ between theories on and the way in which olderpeople make sense of ageing in their everyday lives?
  • 2015
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper explores how older people make sense of ageing and discusses how gerontological theories on ageing compare with empirical findings among older people living in the Faroe Islands. Data derived from group and individual interviews with home dwelling retirees aged 68 to 91. A constructionist grounded theory approach was used. From the analysis, three categories arose that each in their way presented important dimensions of ageing: Physical changes with age; social changes with age and ageing perceived as an ongoing process. No single theory could explain the multifaceted empirical realities of ageing that the analysis showed. The findings from this study underscore the importance of acknowledging ageing as a multidimensional process and, most importantly, that understanding this process requires that older people themselves are recognised as co-constructors of knowledge about ageing.
