  • Development under the surface– unintended consequences of settler institutions in Southern Rhodesia, 1896-1962
  • 2013
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • According to the debate on the long-term impact of colonialism, the central concern is the institutions the colonial powers imposed on the colonies. The main line of argument in this paradigm is that such institutions, once jelled, persisted and provide explanations to current-day development success or failure. While this ‘from above’ perspective might be natural and reflect the fact that colonial powers indeed are alien rulers declaring supremacy imposing a layer of arrangements for governing the society, the analysis is nevertheless often partial. What this debate misses is that institutions might create a multitude of social forces, some of them perhaps in opposing directions and development dynamics might come about in an unexpected manner. The aim of this paper is to take the case of Southern Rhodesia (c. 1900-1962) – a typical African settler economy - to further add to this discussion by shedding light on a largely discounted economic phenomenon taking place in the rural economy, namely the rise of commercially oriented Africans, in the study epitomized by the Native Purchase Area farmers, that expanded their market activities by intensified use of land and labour. We argue that the relative success of this group largely could be understood as an unintended consequence of settler-oriented colonial institutions

  • Disentangling Trade Flows : Firms, Geography and Technology
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis consists of three individual studies and a common introduction. Albeit distinct and self-contained, all studies are devoted to how and why trade flows adjust according to characteristics of markets and attributes of links between markets. The studies build on the idea that questions related to how and why different characteristics of markets and links affect trade flows are inseparable from questions pertaining to which components of trade flows they alter. The first study adheres to the export decision of individual firms and focuses on the role of product variety for firms’ exports from a two-pronged perspective: (i) as an attribute of firms that pertains to their potential to recover destination-specific fixed costs of entry and thus the geographical scope of their export activities and (ii) as a component of firms’ export flows that adjusts across destination markets. The second study is devoted to an analysis of how the magnitude of the fixed entry costs firms incur by entering foreign markets is related to characteristics of the link between the origin and the destination market. It proposes a coupling between familiarity and the size of fixed entry costs, such that familiarity should primarily affect trade flows by affecting the number of exporting firms (the extensive margin). The third study analyzes the relationship between technology specialization and export specialization across regions and how the correspondence between the technology specialization in origin and destination alters the quality of the commodities being traded. A gravity model is augmented with technology specialization variables (based on citation-weighed patent data) and their effect on aggregate export values and prices is estimated.

  • Divergence before the Division: The colonial origins of separate development paths in Korea
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Institutional Economics. - 1744-1382. ; 19:6, s. 802-819
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study revisits the question of what impact Japanese colonialism had on the long-term economic development of North and South Korea. Factor endowments, economic activity and economic performance are compared between the regions that later became parts of North and South Korea, respectively. The study finds that important elements of the economic history of the peninsula have not been sufficiently acknowledged in much of the influential literature that uses Korea as an illustration of theoretical claims of the root causes of development. In particular, the fact that the economic divergence of northern and southern regions could be traced back to different colonial treatments – especially after mid-1920s – has often been overlooked when analysing the divergent post-partition development trajectories. The study suggests, based on a sectoral similarities analysis, that the initial dissimilar economic performance of North and South can at least partially be found in differences in political economy and economic trajectories preceding the partition.

  • Dynamics of Entry and Exit of Product Varieties : – what evolution dynamics can account for the empirical regularities?
  • 2009
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Firm-level heterogeneity is substantial even in narrowly defined industries. This paper focuses on formulating evolution dynamics which can account for the observed heterogeneity and its maintenance. Based on examination of data on Swedish firm’ supply pattern to different markets over time, we present a parsimonious model that has the ambition to capture the picture of heterogeneous firms, while accommodating the simultaneous exit and entry of destination varieties in firms’ supply pattern. The model assumes both scale economies of firms and pathdependence, where the latter is manifested in such a way that the arrival rate of innovation ideas to an individual firm is a function of each firm’s stock of varieties at every given point in time. The path-dependence phenomenon is an “explosive” non-linearity, whereas conservation mechanisms include development of demand and exit of established varieties. The described path dependence explains the skewed distribution of varieties across firms, but the question of what keeps the “equilibrium” away from competitive exclusion where only few large firms remain. We make use of simulations to depict and assess the innovation dynamics of the proposed model.

  • Editorial Annals of Regional Science
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: The annals of regional science. - : Springer. - 0570-1864 .- 1432-0592. ; 64:1, s. 1-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • There is no tradition in Annals of Regional Science that the editors write editorials. However, as of 2020, the editors will each year write an editorial in which we report as well as reflect on recent developments of the journal. We hope that this will be of interest for our readers. This editorial is the first one and marks the start of the strategy to write a yearly editorial. We, i.e., Martin Andersson (Sweden), Hong Sok Kim (South Korea) and Janet Kohlhase (USA), are by some standards a rather new constellation of editors-in-chief (EICs). Janet Kohlhase became an editor in 2011, replacing professor Roger Stough.1 Martin Andersson joined as editor in 2014 and replaced professor Börje Johansson. Hong Sok (Brian) Kim became an editor in 2019 by replacing profes-sor Euijune Kim. The former EICs continue to be part of the journal in the capacity as members of the advisory board of former editors. We are all delighted to serve as EICs and are committed to maintain as well as to further develop the journal’s tradition of publishing high-quality and influential research that pushes the field of regional science forward.
