- Les changements climatiques, les problèmes économiques, les conflits et la pauvreté engendrant des vagues de réfugiés et de migrants, le terrorisme, l’extrémisme, la radicalisation, le nationalisme et le populisme sont autant de questions qui nous préoccupent presque tous en ces temps incertains. Il est urgent pour la communauté des chercheurs d’aider à améliorer notre compréhension des problèmes et des crises perturbant les sociétés actuelles. Le défi consiste non seulement à expliquer les problèmes, mais également à trouver des solutions et à communiquer avec les personnes au pouvoir afin que les conclusions pertinentes des recherches puissent faire une différence. Les chercheurs en médias ne font pas exception. La numérisation a changé nos systèmes de communication en termes de temps, d’espace et de comportement social; elle a changé les fonctions, les pratiques de gestion et le marché en ajoutant de nouveaux types de sociétés transnationales. Ces changements ont transformé la sphère publique; le contexte de la liberté d’expression - la pratique de la démocratie - a évolué. La mondialisation, la géopolitique et les nouvelles technologies de l’information exercent de solides influences formatives sur la liberté d’expression dans la société moderne. Le pouvoir, l’hégémonie, l’égalité et la justice sociale restent des concepts d’une importance décisive – des concepts qu’il nous faut comprendre et repenser dans de nouveaux contextes sociaux et politiques, en particulier lors des discussions sur l’humanisme numérique. Le présent essai vise à apporter une base de discussion sur les principaux enjeux que représente la société contemporaine pour la liberté d’expression, les médias et la culture numérique.

- Research on media and mass communication has been in a state of constant flux for some 50 years. Scholars in the Humanities have traditionally studied the meaning of human expression in language, philosophy, the Arts and literature. Social scientists have focused on the relations between media institutions and other institutions, not least political ones. With the so-called ‘cultural turn’ in the 1980s, media scholars’ interest shifted to the role of media in the development of culture, on the potential of media to generate meaning in a broader sense, and on the adaptation of media messages to culturally dominant forms of understanding. Today, the field is characterized by extreme diversity and extensive specialization. Studies on the systems level are few. At the same time, contemporary multicultural and global societies raise more complex issues than ever before. Given the high degree of specialization, scholars in the field may not be exposed to the impulses needed for them to be able to formulate incisive research problems. For the discipline to produce new insights and new knowledge requires collaboration – within the discipline, but above all collaboration across academic as well as national frontiers.

- For decades, researchers have been addressing the elusive relationship between media, conflict resolution and peace building. Some researchers have paid special attention to the dichotomy between ‘war/conflict journalism’ and ‘peace journalism’. Such discussions have shown the importance of critical thinking when reporting war, conflict and post-conflict around the world. One vital axiom is that people who exercise their right to freedom of expression through journalism must be allowed to practise their work without restrictions. They are, nonetheless, the constant targets of violence and threats. Today’s risks are global and involve new dilemmas because the digital public space is global, while politics remain largely national. There is an increasing understanding of the importance of global solutions and intercultural collaboration, and this issue can no longer be neglected, now that the UN 2030 Agenda is on the global arena as well as national arenas. But if progress is to be made, a clear focus on knowledge and education is needed. It is of the utmost importance that we broaden our theoretical and analytical frameworks based on a more holistic perspective.
