  • Shaped for beauty : Vocational and gendered subjectivities in private education for the beauty industry

    • The aim of this thesis was to answer the question: How are vocational, gendered subjectivities produced in vocational education for the beauty industry? Drawing on Foucault and poststructural feminist theory, this question is answered in four papers, in which the material consists of beauty-school recruitment and marketing material, interviews with skin and spa therapy students and observations of practical skin and spa therapy training. These are educational arrangements that are closely bound to the economic sector of the beauty industry, and they have remained remarkably unexplored. Various aspects of subjectivity production are explored throughout these papers: Paper I shows how the potential beauty student is shaped through processes of responsibilising and individualising in recruitment; Paper II shows how a scientific and caring professional emerges; Paper III shows how students learn to adopt a critical gaze towards bodies; and Paper IV shows how students are produced as emotional workers and learners, taking Hochschild’s term “emotional labour” as a point of departure. The results show how (medical) scientific knowledge becomes a resource in the production of the skin and spa therapy professional, mobilising gender relations of power, and neglecting other types of skills and knowledge. However, relational and caring aspects of work and learning emerge in the study through the way in which wider discourses of femininity inform the ways in which students are produced as professionals.

    • Employability has gained renewed attention in contemporary political discussions during the last ten years. The concept has emerged as a signifier which has replaced the previous way of describing the workforce, thereby producing different kinds of pictures of whom is a desirable worker. This article aims to gain a broader understanding of how discourses on employability position care workers in elderly care as responsible for their own employability. Drawing on the Foucauldian concept of governmentality, transnational policy texts and interview transcripts from interviews with  care workers are analysed and compared. The main questions are: How are care workers in elderly care made responsible for their own employability and how does this relate to the responsibility assigned to entities such as employers and the state?

    • The aim of this article is to contribute to an understanding of contemporary processes of negotiations concerning belonging and non-belonging to the Swedish social community. Taking on a theoretical approach on belonging inspired by Yuval-Davis and Jacobsen, the article analyses three individual stories of women who have migrated to Sweden. Out of this analysis, focusing on how these women claim their belonging to a Swedish social community at the same time as they in different ways are denied such belonging by others, we may conclude that although each of the stories told is unique and articulates an individual experience, there are striking similarities in how their claims of belonging, with its related implications for belonging, are not acknowledged by others. In a way, these individual stories tell us something about some of the crucial challenges regarding belonging in contemporary multi-ethnic Sweden, as well as Europe.

    • I kölvattnet av senaste årens migrationsrörelser har en rad olika initiativ tagits för att möjliggöra nyanländas etablering i det svenska samhället. En sådan insats har varit att på prov erbjuda gymnasieskolans språkintroduktionsprogram (SI) även på folkhögskola. Förhoppningen är att just denna utbildningsform är särskilt väl lämpad för nyanlända ungdomar. I denna forskningsrapport jämförs verksamheten inom SI såsom den bedrivs på två gymnasieskolor och två folkhögskolor. Analysen visar att folkhögskolans organisering av SI-verksamheten är mer flexibel och integrerad i övrig verksamhet, vilket också ger potential till en mer inkluderande undervisning.Studien är del av forskningsprogrammet Migration, lärande och social inkludering, som genom en longitudinell forskningsdesign söker svar på frågan om hur olika sammanhang för (unga) vuxnas språkliga lärande bidrar till deras sociala inkludering. Programmet är ett samarbete mellan forskningsmiljöerna Vuxenpedagogik och folkbildning och Socialt arbete vid Linköpings universitet.

  • Effects of Recognition of Prior Learning as Perceived by Different Stakeholders

    • Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is an integral part of in-service training programs targeting elder care workers in nursing homes. Our main research question is as follows: What are the effects, as perceived by different stakeholders, of participation in RPL programs? We examine this issue through questionnaires and qualitative, semi-structured interviews. The stakeholders included in the study are care workers, supervisors, teachers and managers. We identify effects related to individual care workers and the nursing home as an organization. Three kinds of individual effects and three kinds of organizational effects are identified. The perceived individual effects are the acquisition of knowledge, increased self-esteem and a more professional work attitude. The organizational effects include a growing interest in in-service training, the introduction of new and more effective methods of in-service training, and an increase in reflection and discussion at work.
