  • States of violence : Exploring welfare state regimes as violence regimes by developing a violence regimes index
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of European Social Policy. - : Sage Publications. - 0958-9287 .- 1461-7269. ; 31:3, s. 321-336
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the article is to examine if and how the welfare state regime typology translates into a violence regime typology in a European context. It builds on the concept of violence regimes (Strid et al. 2017; Hearn et al. 2020) to empirically examine whether the production of interpersonal violence constitutes distinct regimes, and how these correspond (or not) with welfare regimes, gender regimes, and with other comparative metrics on violence, gender equality and feminist mobilisation and transnational actors. Its main contribution is to operationalise the concept of violence regimes, thereby moving from theory to a first empirical measurement. By first constructing a new composite measure of violence, a Violence Regimes Index, based on secondary administrative and survey data covering the then 28 EU member states, countries are clustered along two axes of violence: ‘deadly’ violence and ‘damaging’ gender-based violence. This serves to examine if, and how, the production of gendered violence in different states constitutes distinct regimes, analogous to welfare state regimes, as well as to enable future research and further comparisons and contrasts, specifically related to violence and the welfare state. By providing an empirical measurement of violence regimes in the EU, the article then contributes further to the debates on welfare, welfare regimes, and violence. It specifically contributes with discussions on the extent to which there are different violence regimes, comparable to welfare regimes, and with discussions on the relevance of moving from thinking about violence as an institution within other inequality regimes, to thinking about violence as a macro-regime, a way of governing and ruling in its own right. The article concludes that the exclusion of violence from mainstream social theory and research has produced results that may not be valid, and offers an alternative classification using the concept of violence regimes, thereby demonstrating the usefulness of the concept.

  • Career, Care, and Time : Female Top Managers in the Intersections of Age, Gender, and Work–Family
  • 2017. - 1
  • Ingår i: Ageing, Organizations and Management. - Cham, Switzerland : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783319588131 - 9783319588124 ; , s. 229-251
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter addresses the intersections of age, gender and work–family relations, and how these intersections relate to careers, care, and the structuring of time more generally in the lives of women in high managerial positions. We examine how female top managers in different age groups perceive their work–care relations. These questions closely relate to individual life stages and phases of career and care responsibilities, as well as the aged/gendered societal and organisational expectations of the ‘ideal worker’ and the ‘ideal carer’. We draw the analysis from three sets of interview data in order to examine the perceptions of care responsibilities as well as aged/gendered managerial work in the context of work/non-work and long term career prospects.

  • Gender and Management : New Research Directions
  • 2008. - 1
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Management. - Oxford : WileyBlackwell. - 1045-3172 .- 1467-8551.
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This article selectively reviews gender and management research. A flavour of what it can be like to research in this area is offered alongside a more substantive account. The article maps the many strands of work potentially relevant to exploring gender and management. It covers aspects of the field such as its diversity, emerging development, potential marginality and increasing clarity of definition, and considers implications for researchers. The appropriate integration of gender awareness into mainstream theorizing, alongside its separate development, is advocated. Major themes and issues in gender and management research are summarized and briefly addressed. Dilemmas about seeking to promote change but needing to speak within current conventions of management and academia are noted

  • Gendering Human Rights Violations : The Case of Interpersonal Violence
  • 2008. - 1
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • FEMAGE ? Needs for female immigrants and their integration in ageing societies ? was an international research project funded by the European Commission under the 6th Framework Programme. Partners from nine countries (Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Poland and Slovenia) participated in this project from January 2006 until December 2007. The overarching objectives of FEMAGE were to generate and gain knowledge about the experiences, living conditions, and expectations of third country immigrant women regarding their migration and integration on the one hand, and investigate the need for female immigration in ageing societies on the other.
