  • Do Politicians Lead the Tango? : A Study of the Relationship Betwdeen Swedish Journalists and their Political Sources
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Communication. - : SAGE Publications. - 0267-3231 .- 1460-3705. ; 21:2, s. 147-164
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relationship between journalists and their political sources is often described as symbiotic. Furthermore, political sources are often regarded as more powerful than journalists in this relationship. However, most of the research referred to in the international literature is done in the US or Britain. Therefore, the question regarding the relationship between journalists and their political sources, in terms of power, needs to be asked in other countries. This article examines the relationship between journalists and their political sources in Sweden during the National Election in 2002, and in so doing makes a distinction between the power over the process of news making and the media agenda, and the power over the content and the framing of news stories. The results show the importance of making such a distinction. They also show that, in Sweden, it is the journalists and not their political sources that lead the tango most of the time.

  • Electoral Cycles and the Mobilizing Effects of Elections: : A Longitudinal Study of the Swedish Case
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Elections, Public Opinion and Parties. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1745-7289 .- 1745-7297. ; 17:1, s. 79-99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the theory and practice of democratic politics, elections are essential. Not only is voting the one activity that binds the individual to the political system, elections are also expected to mobilize people politically. Thus, the purpose of this article is to study the mobilizing effects of national elections, using Sweden as a case study. More specifically, this article investigates political interest, party identification, trust in political and media institutions, media consumption and satisfaction with the way democracy works through the electoral cycles between 1986 and 2004. The results indicate that elections do mobilize people politically, but not with regard to the media variables.

  • Framing and Election News Coverage in Spain and Sweden
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: 4th International Symposium Communication in the Millennium.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The mass media play a crucial role since it has become the main source for political information for citizens. However, even if the news coverage of election campaigns is important and has been at the center of political communication research for a long time, there is still a lack of comparative studies in this area. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate the election news coverage in Spain and Sweden. The study draws on the concept of framing. By comparing the framing of politics in election news coverage in two vastly different democratic countries, the study will enable a deeper understanding of how the election news coverage is shaped by national media systems and political systems. The empirical method used is quantitative content analysis of the election news coverage in three newspapers in each country: El País, El Mundo and ABC in Spain, and Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dagbladet, and Aftonbladet in Sweden. The time period includes the three weeks prior to the Swedish election in 2002 and the Spanish election in 2004, held on March 14. Differences found in the election coverage will be discussed by authors in order to draw some conclusions, focusing on the importance of national media systems and political systems in understanding the election news coverage.

  • Gäster hos verkligheten : en studie av journalistik, demokrati och politisk misstro
  • 2001
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is threefold. First, to study the portrayal of politics and politicians in Swedish news journalism. Second, to study how the journalistic portrayal of politics and politicians, and people´s opinions about politicians, relate to one another. Third, to analyze the importance of media and journalism in explaining why people think of politicians the way they do.The empirical data consists of two parts. The first is a quantitative study including surveys to three populations - citizens, journalists and politicians. The second is a quantitative content analysis of the political reporting in four main newspapers and three news programs. The survey study shows, among other things, that citizens express the most negative generalized judgements about politicians. The content analysis reveals that it is common in journalism to frame politics as a game. In all newspapers except one, this is the most commonly used frame. Furthermore, the results show that media portray politicians as untrustworthy, as involved in corruption and scandals more often than justified by reality, and as if they were strategic actors in a sense that invites negative attributions. These facts all point to the conclusion that the media is partly to blame for the cynical distrust among citizens. However, the statistical analyses do not reveal any strong and significant correlations between the distrust and different media variables. This is not, however, interpreted as an absence of media effects. Rather, it is interpreted as a consequence of the fact that media effects are difficult to isolate in survey studies, in itself an effect of the fact that it is nearly impossible to avoid media exposure. The conclusion, therefore, is not that journalism and the media create cynical distrust; nor is it true that journalism and media have no responsibility. Rather, the conclusion is that journalism and the media activate the cynical distrust of the public, and that they cultivate, nourish and strengthen it.
