  • Were there long-term economic effects of exposure to Polio Vaccination?: An analysis of migrants to Sweden 1946-2003
  • 2019
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Recent research showed that exposure to the vaccine against polio in early life had no long-term economic benefits among native Swedes. However, whether this result holds for individuals from other countries remains unexplored. This study explores the relationship between exposure to the vaccine and later-life outcomes, but focuses on individuals who migrated to Sweden (birth cohorts 1946-1971), who constitute a diverse sample in terms of national origin. Using adifferences-in-differences approach and register data from the Swedish Longitudinal Immigrant Database, this study explores if being exposed to the vaccine against polio in the year of birth in the country of origin has any impact on adult income, educational achievement, or days or number of hospitalizations. The results are in line with the previous research in showing that there are no statistically significant effects on adult income, education, or health from exposure to the vaccine against polio, regardless of national origin. Furthermore, no scarring effects of exposure to polio epidemics were found on any of the outcomes, reinforcing the hypothesis that polio did not scar individuals in the same way as other contemporary epidemic diseases did, andthat the lack of scarring could explain the absence of long-term impact from vaccine exposure.

  • Disease, Death, and Displacement : The long-term effects of early-life conditions on income, education, and health in Sweden, 1937-2011
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • How are people’s lives shaped by what they experience during infancy, childhood, and adolescence? How are their adult lives impacted by a sudden improvement or worsening in their early-life conditions? This dissertation aims at providing some insights about how specific changes in early-life conditions can affect individuals’ lives in the long-term. It focuses on three very different shocks to early-life conditions: (1) exposure to disease and vaccination, studied through the case of polio and the vaccine against it, (2) experiencing forced migration, studied through the case of Yugoslavian refugees in Sweden, and (3) losing a parent during the childhood years.Since they alter the environment in which children develop, these experiences can also have long-term repercussions in their adult outcomes. Using high-quality, individual-level data from the Swedish administrative registers, as well as methods of causal inference, the four studies in this thesis attempt at understandinghow these shocks can affect the educational attainment, adult health, and adult income of the children who lived through them. For the case of disease and vaccination, the results show that there was no evidence that exposure during early life to either a polio outbreak, or to introduction of the vaccine against the disease, had long-term impacts on adult income, education, or health. Through the study of the case of polio, this thesis contributes to our understanding of scarring effects of disease exposure, particularly by showing that not all shocks and diseases have repercussions felt across the years, even if those effects are theoretically plausible, a case that had not really been discussed in the literature so far.For the case of forced migration, the results show that asylum-seeking children who arrived in Sweden as a consequence of the mid-90’s war in Yugoslavia had lower educational outcomes, compared to non-displaced children, measured almost a decade after the exposure occurred. Finally, for the case of parental death, the results provide evidence that there is an association between parental loss during childhood and lower adult income, educational attainment, and worse health. This analysis also suggests that children’s grief and emotional trauma related to losing a parent is a relevant mechanism for the observed effects.

  • Lasting effects of parental death during childhood: evidence from Sweden
  • 2021
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study looks at the effect of losing a parent before the age of 16 on adult income, educational attainment, and health. Using detailed data from the Swedish registers and several methodological strategies, we follow to adulthood individuals born between 1968 and 1981 and observe their later-life outcomes. The results suggest that, in line with previous research, losing a parent during childhood is associated with substantively lower income, lower educational attainment and more hospitalizations. We find evidence of a critical phase from ages 6-15 for educational attainment and ages 2-10 for hospitalizations, and our estimates suggest that grief and parental investments are relevant mechanisms for the observed effects

  • The Long-Term Effects of Forced Migration : An Early-Life Approach with Evidence from Yugoslavian Refugees in Sweden
  • 2021
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper analyzes the effect of being exposed to forced migration during childhood (ages 0-5) on educational achievement at age 15 (grade 9). Using register data from the Swedish Interdisciplinary Panel, I identify children who migrated to Sweden as a consequence of the rising conflict during the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia, and follow them until age 15, when they received their grades at the end of the 9 years of compulsory education in Sweden. The results show that those who experienced forced migration performed worse in school, as measured by Math and Swedish grades and Merit Rating scores, with forced migrants achieving grades that were on average 5 (Merit Rating), 7 (Swedish), and 22 (Math) percentage points of a standard deviation lower than those of native Swedes. Forced migrants outperformed Swedes only in English, obtaining grades that were on average 12 percentage points of a standard deviation higher than did their native-born counterparts.

  • The Craftsmen's Labyrinth and Geographies of Creativity
  • 2015
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The question of creativity has persisted throughout the entire history of humans, and it has held an important role in our understanding of the creation of places and cultures. Despite the fact that craftsmen have historically contributed significantly to the creation of urban landscapes and their cultures, today they are marginalized from the prevailing discourses of creativity and place-making. Using this research gap as a point of departure, the present study explores not only who the craftsmen are and what creativity means in the craftsmen’s realm but also what visions on human reality their perspectives conjure. Drawing on socio-spatial and poetic considerations as well as on the contemporary narratives of three traditional crafts across Europe—stonemasonry, boat-building and glassmaking—through a dialogical approach and with the understanding of writing as a way of knowing, this study brings into focus the relationship between the Western world today and its foundations, where the craftsman’s understanding of creation originates. To further explore these foundations, this study locates two closely related but discrete worldviews: Plato’s urbanology and cartographic reasoning and Anaximander’s cosmology and the labyrinth. These two philosophical perspectives make the conceptualization of craftsmen’s perspectives possible but also answer why, when and how craftsmen became disassociated from the creativity discourses, as the authors of their works. Moreover, the study argues that the differences between these two perspectives have implications on understanding not only what the original, a model, a copy is but also highlight in which ways these perspectives promote different kinds of place-making and visions of human reality, where cities are not only products of capital. This study can thus be read as the quest for the re-discovery of the craftsman’s perspective. The study concludes that this is the quest for understanding the language capable of expressing the nature of things that are fundamental to the human experience and the understanding of the world in which humans discovered they can be both the subject and an author.

  • A corpus linguistic investigation into online peer feedback practices in CALL teacher education
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Applied Linguistics Review. - : WALTER DE GRUYTER GMBH. - 1868-6303 .- 1868-6311. ; 11:1, s. 55-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates the online peer feedback practices of teacher trainees who are engaged in designing CALL materials. The participants are 111 pre-service English language teachers enrolled in a teacher education programme in Turkey, who post the materials they produce to an online course blog and then evaluate each other's materials. The data come from the compilation of blog posts produced to provide online peer feedback, forming the Corpus of Online Peer Feedback in Teaching. The data are analysed using corpus linguistics, drawing on frequency, collocation, concordance, and keyword analyses. Our findings show that the participants highlight particular features of CALL materials such as student-centeredness, learner interest, and visual aspects by using constructive peer feedback with hedged evaluations, which brings data-based evidence for their knowledge on and beliefs about CALL materials. This research makes a methodological contribution to the study of online data in the field of language teacher education by employing the analytical lense of corpus linguistics. More importantly, the findings reveal that such an analytic approach can bring new insights into understanding the technological and pedagogical knowledge and beliefs of teachers in relation to language teaching materials design and development. The implications of the findings for research on CALL teacher education as well as on feedback and reflection practices are discussed.

  • A Qualitative Study on CALL Knowledge and Materials Design : Insights From Pre-Service EFL Teachers
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF COMPUTER-ASSISTED LANGUAGE LEARNING AND TEACHING. - : IGI GLOBAL. - 2155-7098. ; 7:3, s. 73-87
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study investigates how academic coursework and formal learning of instructional technology and materials design help pre-service English language teachers' development of critical knowledge of CALL materials. The participants are 111 pre-service English language teachers enrolled in a TEFL programme at a Turkish University. Throughout a 14-week semester, these participants learn to design a variety of CALL materials including online teaching tools and a set of Web 2.0 tools. The article explores the skills and knowledge of pre-service teachers on the design and development of audio-visual web-based activities, through qualitative content analysis of their written reflections. The analyses of reflections on practice have revealed that these teachers demonstrate strong and critical understanding of CALL in enriching authenticity, enhancing motivation, facilitating language learning, and providing multimodal resources. They also display great awareness of instructional knowledge, in particular, in the design and interface of technology to facilitate learning.

  • Conversation Analysis in TESOL
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Research Methods in Language Teaching and Learning. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 9781119701637 ; , s. 147-165
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this chapter, I describe and reflect on my use of multimodal conversation analysis(Kääntä & Kasper, 2018; Mondada, 2018) mainly with reference to Sert (2017), a researcharticle that documents situated learning and teaching practices in an English languageclassroom. Conversation analysis (CA) publications within the field of TESOL (1) can becollection-based, (2) can draw on a single case, and (3) can be (micro)longitudinal. Myinvestigations into TESOL classrooms have resulted in a number of collection-basedresearch papers that draw on databases from Luxembourgish (Sert, 2013; Sert & Walsh,2013), Danish (aus der Wieschen & Sert, 2021), Turkish (e.g., Somuncu & Sert, 2019), andSwedish (Sert & Amri, 2021) primary and secondary school settings. While the experienceI will share in this chapter will also reflect my collection-based CA research, I do, however, choose to focus particularly on Sert (2017), a single case analysis of a (micro)longitudinal learning project, since this paper attempts to bridge teaching and learning. While the paperdocuments interactional maneuvers of a novice English language teacher for creating opportunities for learning, it also empirically shows that learning occurs as the focal learner uses a newly learned phrase (i.e., each other – a reciprocal pronoun) in context inthe classroom and orients to the novelty of this phrase. Although the methodological approach and the findings of the paper have recently had a positive impact in the field (seeKotilainen & Kurhila, 2020), the analytical procedures and theoretical framing were challenging, which I will reflect on in this chapter. In the subsections that follow, I will situate the study within its local context and international research arena. In the second and third sections, I will describe the data used and the decisions made in each phase of the research, while providing a meta-analysis of the decision-making processes. I hope that the chapter will be useful for anyone interested in using CA methodology in TESOL research.
