  • "Den dyrkade Lasse och stackars lilla Lotta" : en syntaktisk-semantisk studie av personbeskrivande adjektiv och adverb i populära ungdomsböcker
  • 1984
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The main aim of this study is to examine how characterizations of persons in books for children and adolescents relate to traditional sex role patterns and to determine if there is any difference in this respect between books for girls and books for boys as well as between popular books and quality books.Eight books for girls, eight books for boys, and four books for both girls and boys are examined. From these books 8,268 adjectives, adverbs, and participles which characterize persons or aspects of persons were excerpted. These excerpts have been categorized with regard to syntactic function into attributive adjectives, predicative adjectives, and adverbials, and with regard to meaning as to membership in semantic fields on different levels. The most frequent syntactic category in the material is "predicative" (42.8%), followed by "attributive" (33.4%). Female characters are more often described by predicative adjectives than are male characters, while the opposite is true of attributive adjectives. The choice of syntactic category seems to be determined more by what property or state the lexical item refers to, however, than by the sex of the character described. The semantic fields with the largest number of excerpts are MENTAL PROPERTIES AND STATES (32.9%), SOCIABILITY (15.0%), DRESS AND APPEARANCE (14.7%), and PACE AND MOVEMENTS (11.4%). These fields also dominate within the different categories of books and the descriptions of female and male characters respectively.Traditional sex role patterns are most obvious in characterizations of role characters with respect to their role in society and their relation to other people. Female characters are, e.g., almost exclusively described with respect to their private lives, while male characters are described in terms of their position in society. In the books for boys male characters are attributed a negative or rejecting attitude to their environment, while female characters are attributed a more positive or accepting attitude. The most traditional impression of the opposite sex is conveyed by the books for boys-to the extent that any such impression is conveyed at all by these books. The books for boys have very few female characters and very few descriptions of them. In general, male characters dominate in the books and it is clearly shown that to be a boy or man is more highly regarded than to be a girl or woman. No general differences between popular books and quality literature emerged from the analyses performed. Traditional sex role patterns are equally pronounced in the two types of books, even if there are differences between individual books.

  • The role of gender, age, and income in demand side management acceptance: a literature review
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2023 BEHAVE Conference. - 0000-0000 .- 0000-0000. ; , s. 444-455
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Demand-side management (DSM) programs aiming to both reduce and render household consumption more flexible, are becoming increasingly essential due to energy crises and the growing integration of renewable energy into energy production. The involvement of households and energy users is crucial to fully unlock the potential of DSM programs. As this paper demonstrates, despite more than thirty years of feminist scholarly work focusing on the home as an important site of the production of gender inequality, few of these insights have been taken into account by DSM-designers. Additionally, we note a broader pattern concerning gaps in knowledge regarding the diverse perspectives of energy users and their domestic contexts, all of which create obstacles to successful rollout and scalability. This paper uses the concept of the social license to automate and insight from feminist research to analyse the literature on DSM programs. We find three primary barriers in household DSM programs: 1) there is an unresolved tension between DSM technology being perceived as a masculine domain and the home as a feminine domain, 2) low-income households face challenges in accessing the technology needed to enable both flexibility and savings, and 3) disparities in opportunities for participation among elderly and young individuals in DSM programs and their complex reasons are insufficiently considered. Based on these findings we argue that user diversity needs to form a starting point in DSM program design for fair and scalable solutions.

    • ‘Creepypastas’ are short horror stories that circulate online, spreading through the act of copying and pasting, and often threatening to ‘curse’ the reader in the process. In this article I explore what it might mean to strike up companionship with and show responsibility towards that which is considered non-existent yet, as in the case of creepypasta and its monsters, hauntingly present nonetheless. I do so through the framework of Jacques Derrida's ‘hauntology’ as well as Donna Haraway's work on responsibility as a question of how to respond to the response of the non/human other. The question I would like to ask is this: how might one respond to the response of the non/human other, if the non/human other is considered to not exist?

  • Here be monsters : a choreomaniac's companion to the danse macabre
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Women & Performance. - : Routledge. - 0740-770X .- 1748-5819. ; 23:3, s. 414-423
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Consider this a vade mecum: an invitation to “walk with me” through more or less uncanny terrains of worlds in the making in search, of(f) course, of monsters. The search will be delving into the areas of “creepypasta:” pieces of cursed prose and pictures that circulate online, waiting to contaminate and possess the next reader. Using a theoretical framework of posthuman and feminist theory, not least the work done by Jacques Derrida and Donna Haraway, this vade mecum asks what it might mean to engage ethically with that which is not supposed to exist, but which haunts us nonetheless. In other words: what does it mean to move, live and engage with spectres in digital times?

  • In the Company of Ghosts : Hauntology, Ethics, Digital Monsters
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis explores French philosopher Jacques Derrida’s ’hauntology’ through the lens of digital monsters and feminist theory.Hauntology – a pun on ‘ontology’ and ‘haunting’ – offers an ethics based on responsibility towards that which cannot be said to fully exist, yet has an effect on our everyday lives nonetheless. Like the figure of the ghost, such undecidable existences are neither absent nor present, here nor gone, of the past or the future. In other words: they haunt.By engaging with hauntology through contemporary stories of digital monsters – such as The Curious Case of Smile.jpg, Welcome to Night Vale and Mushroom Land TV - the thesis discusses how such troubling hauntings might be imagined, and what it means to think an ethics based on responsibility towards the undecidable. In this way, the thesis brings together hauntology and digital media, arguing that thinking with and through the figure of the ghost as well as the digital monster may lead to different and critical ways of imagining both the world and ethics. In short, drawing upon feminist theory and creative writing, the thesis maps out a relational ethics of hauntings and internet story-telling.

  • Writing bodies and bodies of text : Thinking vulnerability through monsters
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Gender, Work and Organization. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0968-6673 .- 1468-0432. ; 29:2, s. 561-574
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we suggest approaching writing as a vulnerable practice marked by an unstable boundary between bodies: bodies of text and bodies of writers. We present an exercise-method that we refer to as Monster Writing, which we have developed in order to engage with these instabilities as well as in order to address experiences of difficulty, anxiety and uncertainty in relation with the text and writing process. Though the writing process can at times be exciting and thrilling, and at other times perhaps a little tedious and mundane, for some it also presents (more than) occasional encounters with one's own insecurities, shame and doubt. We argue that this potentially more painful relationship between writer and text should be awarded more attention in scholarship on writing, and that a way of doing so is through the framework of feminist theory on vulnerability, embodiment, and the monstrous.

  • Degendering the display of homosocial relationships? : A visual content analysis of brothers and sisters in Swedish newspaper photos
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The literature on homosociality has often assumed differences between female and male homosocial relationships, where sociality and intimacy form a continuum among women and a binary among men. Also, female homosociality is understood as associated with family and home, while the male equivalent would be associated with public space and work. However, some have argued that with the increasing acceptance of male homosexuality, as well as with feminist organising and women’s inclusion in the public sphere, these gender differences in homosociality would disappear. Such reduced gender differences would presumably be more prevalent in countries where the tendencies mentioned are more pronounced, such as Sweden. In this presentation, I present a quantitative visual content analysis of Swedish newspaper photos featuring same-sex siblings. I argue that the representation of such sibling relationships can be a good measurement of homosociality in society. The hypothesis tests overall disconfirm the hypothesis that homosociality is becoming less gender-specific, for example showing that brothers touch less frequently in the photos than sisters and that they are associated more often with work while sisters are associated with home and family. There are however caveats to these results, and some measurements do show signs of homosocial convergence.
