  • Stewardship and beyond? Young people's lived experience of conservation activities in school grounds
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Environmental Education Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1350-4622 .- 1469-5871. ; 27, s. 1502-1516
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article provides ethnographic insight into the more-than-human relationships enacted through young people's participation in school grounds conservation activities. As a response to the escalating biodiversity crisis, conservation appears well-placed to facilitate young people's development of an environmental ethic of care, and a capacity to work towards addressing environmental issues. Proponents of posthuman pedagogies, however, argue that the 'stewardship' perspective underlying these activities fails to achieve the radical shift in human-environment relations required in response to the Anthropocene, given its apparent reinforcement of a perceived human/nature binary, and narrow 'solutions'-based approach. Considering these critiques, this article demonstrates that where there is openness to unplanned more-than-human encounters and the enactment of young people's own 'lived curricula', conservation activities can nonetheless enable forms of 'collective thinking with the more-than-human world' that transcend any underlying 'stewardship' perspective. We therefore point to the potential role of conservation activities within posthuman responses to the Anthropocene, provided such openness is maintained.

  • Learning by Doing: An Analysis of the Seila Experiences in Cambodia
  • 2002
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Royal Government of Cambodia’s Seila programme and its support project CARERE2 that was implemented in 1996 – 2001, is the objective of this study. The purpose of the study to analyse the relative success of the programme is threefold: to increase the knowledge of the Seila programme and spread its experiences to a larger public than those involved with the programme; to analyse why the programme was a success and finally to investigate if the Seila experiences may be replicable to other development programmes. The report starts with a description of Seila and the support projects and the history of how the programme was conceptualized. The first part of the study concludes with an explanation of the Seila programme in terms of concept, systems and structures and delivery of poverty alleviation investments and services. After setting the scene the report tackles its main purpose to analyse the circumstances, factors, processes and role of government and donors in explaining the success of Seila. The authors analyse and seek explanations for success in four main areas: (1) the circumstances and environment where the programme was conceived, formulated and implemented; (2) the programme’s vision, plan, design and management, (3) the Cambodian society and government response and adoption of the Seila experiment; and (4) the role of the donors. In the third part ‘Consequences and Conclusions’ the internal and external critique of the Seila programme is summarized. Finally, the description, analysis and discussions are brought together in the concluding chapter, where implication for the Seila success on contemporary development theories paradigms are analysed and the possibility of replicability, fully or partly, to other development initiatives and what the implications are for the stakeholders should they decide to replicate the Seila programme.

  • Equality before custom? - A study of property rights of previously disadvantaged women under land reform and communal tenure in post-apartheid South Africa
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Based on legal primary and secondary sources as well as text based and secondary data, Equality before custom? explores the relationship between statutory law and customary law in relation to previously disadvantaged women’s access to land through land reform, in post-apartheid South Africa. With the point of departure in this new constitutional order, the position of official customary law and living custom in land reform and communal land tenure is examined. The struggle that many previously disadvantaged women face, in trying to access and hold land under current land reform and communal land tenure structures, is further analysed. Feminist legal theories and methods are explored in search of a theoretical structure that can help us understand the legal impact that the plural South African legal system has on these women’s property rights. Further, in Equality before custom? the theoretical link between women’s legal ability to access, own and freely transfer property, and poverty reduction is analysed. The main conclusions of the thesis are presented in the form of theoretical considerations putting the law in the context of poverty and underdevelopment as well as suggesting legal reform. The results of the research show that gender equality in terms of property rights is an important component of economic development and that the traditional leadership in South Africa has an important role to play in improving the respect of gender equality, especially in rural and semi-urban communities. Therefore it is suggested that national guidelines should be drawn up, indicating how the traditional leadership could implement gender equality into the customary structure, building on the view of the South African Constitutional Court that it is the traditional leadership that should be in charge of developing customary law in line with the equality clause in the Constitution. This approach to the promotion of gender equal property rights could help decrease the feminisation of poverty in South Africa as worsened by the impact of HIV/Aids.

  • Cognitive aspects of cortical plasticity in connection with auditory deprivation
  • 2013
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper considers evidence of plasticity resulting from congenital and acquired hearing impairment as well as technical and language interventions. Speech communication is hindered by hearing loss. Individuals with normal hearing in childhood may experience hearing loss as they grow older and use technical and cognitive resources to maintain speech communication. The short- and medium-term effects of hearing aid interventions seem to be mediated by individual cognitive abilities and may be specific to listening conditions including speech content, type of background noise and type of hearing aid signal processing. Furthermore, some aspects of cognitive function may decline with age and there is evidence that age-related hearing impairment is associated with poorer long-term memory. It is not yet clear whether improving audition through hearing aid intervention can prevent cognitive decline. Profound deafness from an early age implicates a set of critical choices relating to possible restoration of the auditory signal through the use of prostheses including cochlear implants and hearing aids as well as tomode of communication, sign or speech. These choices have an influence on the organization of the developing brain. In particular, while the cortex may display sensory reorganization in response the linguistic modality of choice, cognitive organization seems to prevail.

  • Cognitive spare capacity and speech communication : a narrative overview
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: BioMed Research International. - : Hindawi Publishing Corporation. - 2314-6133 .- 2314-6141. ; 2014:869726
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background noise can make speech communication tiring and cognitively taxing, especially for individuals with hearing impairment. It is now well established that better working memory capacity is associated with better ability to understand speech under adverse conditions as well as better ability to benefit from the advanced signal processing in modern hearing aids. Recent work has shown that although such processing cannot overcome hearing handicap, it can increase cognitive spare capacity, that is, the ability to engage in higher level processing of speech. This paper surveys recent work on cognitive spare capacity and suggests new avenues of investigation.

  • Annex A : General Literature Review
  • 2022
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this document we provide a brief review of academic literature with the most common theoretical arguments and general empirical findings on the links between conflict and access to natural resources, especially those related to water more generally as well as groundwater. We further provide insights from reviewing literature on conflict in Somalia.
