  • 2022
  • Ingår i: The COVID-19 Crisis and Entrepreneurship. - Cham : Springer Nature. ; , s. 61-85, s. 61-85
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the first quarter of 2020, the global economy was rapidly hit by a pandemic which led to state-wide lockdowns and the worst economic crisis since the World War II. Both the supply and the demand sides of economies were severely affected, followed by a dramatic dip in global GDP. As a response, policymakers introduced an unprecedented number of interventions to back up employees, firms, and industries to counteract the collapsing markets. Our main objective is to explore how these fundamental policy interventions are likely to influence the future potential and functioning of markets. Historically swings in the pendulum favoring either market-based solutions or more regulated public sectors have coincided with disruptive crises. The overall question is what will happen during post-COVID-19, will governments withdraw their crisis policies and how will a possible retreat be organized? Are we entering an era of permanently increased governmental interventions? More precisely, we identify three specific threats to the market-oriented economy: the extension and development of governmental expenditures, protectionistic measures, and the level of state aid and the degree of competition at markets. We are particularly interested in the effect of the COVID-19 measures, and their possible extension, on Schumpeterian dynamics, both in terms of entry and exits (Schumpeter I) and how the position of large firms will be affected (Schumpeter II).

  • Names, shares and mortgages : The formalisation of Swedish commercial bank lending, 1870-1938
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Financial History Review. - 0968-5650 .- 1474-0052. ; 26:1, s. 81-108
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the process of the formalisation of the Swedish financial market, through an analysis of commercial bank lending in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The analysis shows that the incorporation of Swedish business around the turn of the century led to a shift from lending primarily backed by name security to an increased use of mortgage and shares as collateral - after the severe stock market crash in 1920/1 mortgage lending surpassed lending against shares as collateral. We interpret this change as an important part of the formalisation process of the financial system, as it standardised the valuation process and allowed creditors to exit on a secondary market. Our statistical testing points to increased financial wealth and liquidity represented by the broad money supply, plus population growth and urbanisation, as important forces behind this formalisation.

  • Ingvar Svennilson on economic planning in war and peace
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: History of Economic Ideas. - : Fabrizio Serra editore. - 1122-8792 .- 1724-2169. ; 25:2, s. 115-138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the transition from a wartime to a peacetime economy in the mid-1940s, Sweden experienced a heated debate on economic planning in which a number of Sweden's leading economists were involved. In 1941, Ingvar Svennilson, a member of the so-called Stockholm school of economists, became the head of the Industrial Institute of Economic and Social Research, founded by Swedish industry. During the following years he wrote extensively on the issue of economic planning. Although this issue was ideologically explosive, he managed to strike a balance which earned him respect in most camps. His focus gradually shifted from central planning during the war, toward framework planning and indicative planning after the war, when he designed the first Swedish long-term survey.

  • The significance of climate variability on early modern European grain prices
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Cliometrica. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1863-2505 .- 1863-2513. ; 16, s. 29-77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Grain was the most important food source in early modern Europe (c. 1500-1800), and its price influenced the entire economy. The extent to which climate variability determined grain price variations remains contested, and claims of solar cycle influences on prices are disputed. We thoroughly reassess these questions, within a framework of comprehensive statistical analysis, by employing an unprecedentedly large grain price data set together with state-of-the-art palaeoclimate reconstructions and long meteorological series. A highly significant negative grain price-temperature relationship (i.e. colder = high prices and vice versa) is found across Europe. This association increases at larger spatial and temporal scales and reaches a correlation of -0.41 considering the European grain price average and previous year June-August temperatures at annual resolution, and of -0.63 at decadal timescales. This strong relationship is of episodic rather than periodic (cyclic) nature. Only weak and spatially inconsistent signals of hydroclimate (precipitation and drought), and no meaningful association with solar variations, are detected in the grain prices. The significant and persistent temperature effects on grain prices imply that this now rapidly changing climate element has been a more important factor in European economic history, even in southern Europe, than commonly acknowledged.

  • Consumption and Advertising in Eastern Europe and Russia in the Twentieth Century
  • 2023. - 1
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This book explores Eastern European consumer cultures in the twentieth century, taking a comparative perspective and conceptualizing the peculiarities of consumption in the region. Contributions cover lifestyles and marketing strategies in imperial contexts in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; urban consumer cultures in the Interwar Period; and consumer and advertising cultures in the Soviet Union and its satellite republics. It traces the development of marketing throughout the century, and the changes in society brought about by democratization and the 'Americanization' of consumption. Taken together, the essays gathered here make a valuable contribution to our understanding of consumption and advertising in the region.

  • Cement Cartels in the United States and Sweden during the Twentieth Century: How Did the Cartel Legislation Affect the Cement Industry?
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Business History Conference, BHC-EBHA Meeting June 24-27 2015, Miami, Florida.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The cement industry in Sweden and US has evolved differently because of the legislation surrounding competition in the two countries. In Sweden the cement producers engaged in a cartel and sales company already in the end of the 19th century. During the 20th Century the concentration process in the industry continued gradually, ending up with monopoly in the 1970s. In US the cement producers were scattered and the authorities intertwined in what they considered anti-competitive behavior. The Federal Trade Commission broke up the basing point system in the 1940s and the vertical integration into ready mixed concrete in the 1960s. In the1960s and 1970s the structural change took off in US, old plants closed and many mergers and acquisitions took place, this change had already occurred in Sweden 20 years before. The biggest difference between the two countries’ cement industry have been the export ratio. Sweden has from almost the start been exporting cement, while US imported cement in the beginning and the industry have never taken on exporting. Both industries have been highly regulated, but by different actors; US by the antitrust authorities and Sweden by the cartel.
