  • Performance indicators in the wood products industry – a review and study of a saw mill supply chain
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Forest Economics. - 0355-032X. ; 45, s. 127-136
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sawmills are experiencing a turbulent environment in which customers’ expectations and global competition set the landscape for the sawmill industry. Increasing competition and complexity, as well as the general technological development in the business environment, have enhanced the importance of quality with regards to both products and services. Hence it is important for sawmills to be able to offer a high quality of its products and services to its customers. The purpose of this paper is to identify the currently existing quality assurance practices in the Swedish sawmill industry. This study is conducted as an interview study, in which five sawmill representatives were interviewed with regards to, for instance, their quality assurance process and quality measurements. The study concludes that the individual sawmills work to either an ISO-9000 or strength grading certificate and hence they adhere to certified procedures and routines. This research, however, does not register actions taken in every-day business, and hence additional studies would need to be conducted with an in-depth case study approach in order to identify the actual behavior at each sawmill. The studies identify factors limiting sawmills in their work to meet customers’ requirements; however, customers asking for additional requirements are often denied delivery of products. This study aims at laying a foundation regarding sawmills’ quality assurance practices and thus covers an unexplored area within sawmill research.

  • Talking work in a bank: A study of organizing properties of leadership in work interactions
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Human Relations. - : SAGE Publications. - 0018-7267 .- 1741-282X. ; 66:8, s. 1101-1129
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Leadership is generally seen not only as an inspiring and motivating force but also as having important organizing properties. Despite this common assumption, the organizing properties of leadership have not yet been clarified sufficiently or demonstrated empirically. In this study, such organizing properties are revealed through a detailed analysis of one single work episode, drawn from an ethnographic study of leadership in a bank. Using conversation analysis, the study shows that leadership, understood as an interpersonal influence process, enables and facilitates organizing processes. As expected, this involves establishment of episodic closures, but also resistance to such. Further, the study shows important influence and organizing functions of situated collective identities-in-interaction, which render the involved individuals interdependent.

  • From performance management to managing performance : An embedded case study of the drivers of individual- and group-based performance in a call center context
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Managing performance is critical for realizing certain economic benefits when managing customer relations in call centers. However, prior call center research is fragmented and under-analyzed, which contributes to a limited understanding of the underlying elements for performance and complexities in managing individual- and group-based performance in call centers. The purpose of this thesis is to further our knowledge of how to manage performance in call centers. The findings from this qualitative study of four embedded cases in a Swedish company operating in the utilities sector provide empirical evidence of how call center agents and management manage performance. I propose that coping and the effects of coping strategies on performance constitute the primary link between contextual, control-based, cultural elements and performance outcomes. I found that call center agents handled their lack of knowledge of how to effectively solve (or not solve) a perceived problem by adopting various coping strategies. Such strategies were influenced by the amount of experienced coping over time and supported by dysfunctional prevailing performance-management systems. These coping strategies determined individual- and group-based performance in this call center setting.Based upon these findings, I suggest a more proactive role for middle managers in handling the underlying causes of these coping strategies, rather than their consequences, in terms of performance impacts. I also propose suggestions to management for handling internal challenges generated by a dysfunctional performance-management system in these call centers. I also provide additional managerial guidelines for managing customer relations and performance in call centers, such as how to align call center operations with company vision.

  • Comparative corporate governance and the legal transplant : What you see is what you get?
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An important controversy in the literature on comparative corporate governance concerns the role played by the transfer of law and regulations in the process of improving corporate governance. This paper claims this controversy is the consequence of the view of legal transplants assumed. Drawing on legal studies it is argued that transferred regulations could either be socially easy or socially relevant. Not both as standard theories of comparative corporate governance would claim. A model for understanding legal transplants in corporate governance is developed and empirically exemplified by a case based on the introduction of the Swedish corporate governance code, proving a multitude of possible outcomes in relation to the transplant of corporate governance regulations. Comparative corporate governance research is advised to consider a more nuanced understanding of legal transplants.

  • Convergence of corporate governance systems : a legal transplant perspective
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Competition & change. - : Sage Publications. - 1024-5294 .- 1477-2221. ; 24:5, s. 450-470
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The predominant approaches to comparative corporate governance view legal transfers dichotomously, seeing corporate governance systems as either converging or diverging as a result of legal reform. Drawing on legal studies, this paper proposes an alternative model using the metaphor of the staircase to conceptualize how legal transplants can meet different evaluation criteria before being considered ‘successful’. The model is empirically illustrated by the introduction of the Swedish Corporate Governance Code. It is found that different corporate governance rules when transplanted could be said to meet evaluation criteria more or less strictly. This finding has implications for our empirical and theoretical understanding of how corporate governance systems converge.

  • Convergence of National Corporate Governance Systems : Localizing and Fitting the Transplants
  • 2014
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this thesis is to elucidate the phenomenon of legal transfers from the perspective of the dominant comparative corporate governance research paradigm. Drawing on legal studies and empirical observations, the thesis develops a terminology for understanding the legal transplant metaphor in comparative corporate governance and problematizes the debate on the convergence or divergence of corporate governance systems. This purpose is achieved through five empirically-based articles that are included in the thesis. The first article concerns a change in the Swedish Companies Act that allows for stock repurchases. The second article discusses the voluntary and then mandatory introduction of nomination committees. The third and the fourth articles focus on the introduction of the Swedish corporate governance code. Finally, the fifth article discusses the role played by independent directors in the Swedish corporate governance setting. The focus on legal transplants broadens the framework of comparative corporate governance in three respects. First, it develops and applies a clearer framework for distinguishing between accepted and rejected legal transplants (based on Watson, 1974, Miller, 2003 and Mattei, 1994), thus refining the debate regarding convergence or divergence of corporate governance systems (e.g. Hansmann and Kraakman, 2004, and Branson, 2001). Second, the empirical studies demonstrate how imported regulations can be “localized” (Gillespie, 2008a) by local regulators and/or “fitted” (adapted from Kanda and Milhaupt, 2003) by other local actors. The studies show that fitting often precedes localizing. Third, the thesis ads to a growing body of research (e.g. Buck et al., 2004; Lutz, 2004 and Collier and Zaman, 2005) emphasizing that convergence and divergence are not necessarily two empirically or analytically distinguishable processes. Rather, depending on the perspective of the scholar, convergence and divergence might refer to very similar – or even identical – processes. Finally, in focusing on the transplant process, this thesis offers a description and analysis of the role played by various key actors in the Swedish corporate governance system.
