- The topic of leadership in the media industry is a compelling one. While other industries have leaders or captains, the media sector has moguls, magnates and barons. Randolph Hearst, William Paley, Henry Luce and Robert Maxwell represent some of the most controversial and flamboyant business leaders of recent times. And the current crop of contemporary media industry leaders – Rupert Murdoch, Ted Turner and Steve Jobs – is no less charismatic.However leadership is also a sprawling area of management theory characterised by ambiguity and controversy. This volume presents a selection of papers from an international conference on ‘Challenges at the Top: Leadership in Media Organizations’ which brought together researchers from around the world to confront these ambiguities, and explore and exchange opinions about this intriguing issue. The diversity and richness of the contributions in this book reflect the diversity and richness inherent in the practice of leadership as exercised in the media sector. The topic is still an under-researched field, and this book makes a contribution towards developing new theory, identifying fruitful areas for future study, and aiding understanding of the drivers of performance of media firms.

An assessment of attitudes towards plastics and bioplastics in Europe

- Over the last 50 years, conventional fossil-based plastics have become an integral part of our everyday lives. Apart from their low production costs, this is due to a number of their unique properties, including durability, strength, lightness, electrical and thermal insulation, resistance to chemicals and corrosion. The production of plastics has increased from 1.5 million metric tons in 1950 to 359 million metric tons in 2018. Of this total, 61.8 million metric tons were produced in Europe. There are various problems associated with plastic use and disposal that pose a serious threat to both the physical environment and human health. Since public behaviour plays a key role when it comes to the use of plastic, this paper reports on a study that focused on an assessment of attitudes towards plastics and bioplastics in Europe. The results showed that packaging is the most frequent modality of plastic used among participants. In addition, majority of participants are aware that plastic waste can affect environment and human health and therefore segregate and properly dispose plastics. Also, even though most respondents were aware of the environmental problems related to plastic use and showed a positive inclination towards using bioplastic materials, their limited availability and lack of relevant information about bioplastics pose a problem for wider use. Departing from the assumption that the public attitude is a determining factor in the consumption of plastics as a whole and bioplastics in particular, this paper also sheds some light on the current situation, identifying some trends and information gaps which should be addressed in order to encourage a more rational use of plastics in Europe.

- Plastic products are easy and convenient for our everyday use, but their negative impacts on human health and the environment cannot be overlooked. The negative impacts and effects of plastic waste are now widely known and have been subject of much recent media coverage, both in Europe and on a global level. Faced with increasing amounts of plastic waste, the European Union as a whole and many European governments in particular, are currently revising the policy options available to cope with the problem. One of the tools which may be deployed with a view to reducing the pressures posed by plastic waste, is the Extended Producer Responsibility principle. It is considered to be one of the major waste management policy instruments that support the implementation of the European waste hierarchy. Its application may assist in fostering the collection and recycling of waste streams that contain plastic. This paper presents an overview of the problems posed by plastic waste, and outlines their environmental dimensions. It discusses the role of the Extended Producer Responsibility principle and provides some recommendations that may be useful in enhancing extended producer responsibility.

- Successful cooperation by higher educational institutions (HEIs) in mutually beneficialsynergistic relationships with governments and business is a core driver of growth andinnovation in knowledge-based economies. Whereas, in most European Union (EU) countries,university-business interactions have been widely fostered in an array of diverse cooperationpatterns, structures and schemes, Central Asian (CA) countries are only just beginning tocreate strategies and structures that have a clear focus to promote sustainable economicinnovation. However, there are many obstacles on the path towards embedding an innovationstructure and culture in CA economies. The project on which this research is based introduced, developed and implemented “Innolabs” as sustainable, user-centred initiatives, built onexperience from the EU and elsewhere, to foster knowledge exchange and innovation. Theaim was to help CA HEIs link academic research and knowledge production with anentrepreneurial spirit, through adopting a greater interdisciplinary focus on social andorganizational practices and the needs of innovation end-users. In turn, this would foster moretargeted organizational development and a growing innovation culture in staff, students andthe local business environment. This paper assesses the process of design andimplementation of Innolabs as context-appropriate and user-centred instances.

On the role of commodity futures in portfolio diversification

- The last two decades have witnessed major financial crises that led investors to seek alternative assets and investment strategies to reduce their portfolio risk. In this article, we provide information on the role of commodity futures in designing portfolios and managing risk based on an appealing operational framework. Using more than 20 years of sample data, we first investigate the conditional mean and volatility dynamics of equity and commodity futures markets within a dynamic conditional correlation model setup. We then form alternative equity-commodity futures portfolios by changing the weights of commodity futures and examine if the diversified commodity-equity portfolios perform superior to the all-equity portfolios and four well-known investment strategies that suit most practitioners. Stochastic dominance approach shows that including commodity futures in diversified portfolios does not always improve the risk-return performance, except for gold in some particular portfolio setups. Accordingly, commodity assets have behaved like financial assets (stocks) and tend to be driven by the same pricing factors in general, which reduces the benefits of diversification.

- By understanding organizations in depth, it is possible to perceive some interactions of organizations with other organizations and with their environment. This research aims to understand the dimensions that explain the relationship network existing between a technology-based incubator and a university located in the region of the Itajaí valley. Methodologically this study is characterized as descriptive in relation to its objective, as for the procedures it can be considered as applied research from the survey of primary data and qualitative in relation to the approach of the problem. Thus, the main results have identified that the main relationship between the incubator and the university lies in the structure of the board of directors of the incubator, where the dean of administration is the chairman of the incubator's board. Therefore, although there are some deficiencies in the relations between institutions, it can be considered as the bridge of success.

- Sverige har sedan lång tid tillbaka varit världsledande när det gäller ett inkluderande ledarskap med en medarbetarorienterad styrning. Utvecklingen sedan 1990-talet har dock medfört att nya ägarformer och en mångfald skilda lednings- och styrningsprinciper har tillkommit som ställer nya krav på ledarskapet, vilket inneburit en rad utmaningar för chefer som utövar ett inkluderande ledarskap.Rapporten grundar sig i en forskningscirkel som rör frågan om svenskt management med ett inkluderande ledarskap fortsatt är relevant i dagens globala värld. I forskningscirkeln har ingått två arbetslivsforskare och fem chefer och ledare i ideell och privat sektor. Gemensamt för alla deltagare är en tro på ett inkluderande ledarskap som ett sätt att leda för att bibehålla och utveckla livskraft i organisationer.Resultatet visar att ett inkluderande ledarskap fortsatt är relevant och har framtiden för sig. Närhet och tillit mellan chef och medarbetare visar sig vara nödvändigt för att kunna utveckla och upprätthålla organisatorisk resiliens eller långsiktig livskraft.
