- This paper uses a combination of transaction cost economics (TCE), the resource-based view (RBV) and the relational view to analyse vertical integration in the rail sector. The empirical analysis is based on a cross-case comparison of four case studies of intermodal operators in Europe, each exhibiting different levels of collaboration and integration between terminals, operators and sub-contractors, in terms of both inter-organisational investment and asset ownership. Viewing rail wagons as “relationship specific assets” rather than merely transaction specific or firm specific demonstrates that wagon ownership is not only a good indicator of the level of vertical cooperation but of the existence of trust and learning within a collaborative environment. Thus the organisational setup is not derived purely from transaction or resource characteristics, but is rather driven by the integration of processes through the purchase of assets that will be used to produce a service, with the expected levels of trust and commitment that such a venture entails. In this sense, the role of the wagon as a relationship specific asset is a microcosm of the key elements of a successful intermodal transport system.

While many ports choose not to act beyond complying with existing environmental regulations in their city, region, or country, in many cases they have exercised their potential for addressing both social and environmental externalities.

- This paper applies the marketing strategy literature to the four phases of the intermodal terminal life cycle (ITLC) to identify the appropriate competitive strategy to be undertaken at each phase, based on fluctuating markets and competitor behaviour. Not only can applying the correct strategy at each phase help to obtain a competitive advantage, but anticipating future strategies in advance can underpin the success of current strategies and ensure that both public and private stakeholders are prepared for future challenges. The paper derives the appropriate strategies, provides empirical examples and discusses the opportunities and challenges inherent in each strategy. The paper concludes with suggestions for future research on strategy options that go beyond the traditional view of terminals as homogeneous interchangeable assets. Rather than simple improvement of factor conditions by investing in the infrastructure, innovative strategies to obtain competitive advantage should focus on partnerships with external stakeholders such as rail operators, 3PLs and shippers.

- This book is part of a stream of research on intermodal terminal governance carried out by the authors throughout 2013-15, building on their previous research on intermodal transport and logistics. One of the inspirations for this book is that much work has been done on port governance yet so little has addressed intermodal terminal governance, despite the clear similarities. Research on intermodal transport tends to focus either on the development process or the operational phase, with less attention given to the link between the two, i.e. how the developer finds an operator and secures both efficient operations and acceptable prices for users. In particular, there has been a lack of research linking these phases together, exploring how the development model anticipates the kind of concession model adopted and how both of these influence the operational model, and especially the ability of the owner and operator to make operational decisions. Research into the long-term management of strategic terminal infrastructure is even more scarce, meaning that conditions under which terminals should be sold or redeveloped remain unexplored. Research is, therefore, required into the link between the initial funding (both public and private), the business model of the terminal and the ongoing economic viability of the terminal over the course of its life, which may be decades. The topic of intermodal transport has risen to prominence in the last ten years, with an explosion of academic papers on intermodal terminals appearing in a range of academic journals, aligned with much public funding for research that is hoped to support government goals of emissions reduction, congestion amelioration and economic growth. As this book will attempt to show, such motivations are not easy to achieve, especially all at the same time. The epigraph quotation from van Ark reveals the scope of the challenge and indeed intermodal operators have commented to the authors that it takes years of doing everything right to attract shippers to intermodal transport and only one thing wrong to turn them away. It is our contention that one reason for this difficulty is the lack of a life cycle framework in which to situate the analysis of different aspects of intermodal terminals as they pass through stages of conception, planning, funding, building, concessioning, operation and maintenance. The aim of this book is to provide such a framework.

- he full adoption of electric autonomous vehicles (EAVs) will revolutionise the global transport system in general and road freight transport in particular. Traditional business models based on manufacturers selling trucks to operators could conceivably disappear. As with passenger transport, the rapid obsolescence of the technology and the cost will drive a non-ownership model and an evolution from products to services. Therefore it is expected that a new network operator will emerge to run this service, which in the future will likely develop into a fully smart network. As the value of the truck technology is reduced and the software component becomes the core source of value creation, it opens up the possibility of new entrants to the market who do not need to purchase physical assets at all and may instead rent them from a competitive pool of asset providers. Despite the recent growth in research on Mobility as a Service (MaaS) in passenger transport, these issues have been neglected in freight transport. The goal of this paper is to establish the features of this new smart network and derive a range of potential business models incorporating the changing roles of each actor, which are then evaluated against an analytical framework of business model innovation. The research concludes by proposing an update to the well-known OECD transportation model to include the network operator concept.
