  • Talet om informationskompetens : Implikationer för relationen mellan bibliotekarier och användare
  • 2009

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Libraries, Archives, and Museums in Transition : Changes, Challenges, and Convergence in a Scandinavian Perspective - Changes, Challenges, and Convergence in a Scandinavian Perspective. - London : Routledge. - 9781032033648 - 9781032037523 - 9781003188834 ; , s. 100-113
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Libraries, archives, and museums are all based on collections, entailing the need for knowledge organization. However, the need for, and practice of, knowledge organization differs in the three institutions. The aim of this chapter is to describe and discuss differences and similarities in knowledge organization between LAMs. For instance, in libraries there are a distinct use of standardization and a focus on searching; in archives the principle of provenance is central; and in museums the emphasis is on interpretation of the collections. The chapter will, among other things, discuss LAMs and knowledge organization in relation to the development of technologies, the positions of expertise and participants, and the role of mediation and power.

  • The Construction of Whiteness in the Work of The Swedish State Institute for Race Biology
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In 1922 a eugenic research centre, The Swedish State Institute for Race Biology, was founded in Uppsala, with the purpose being to survey and classify the Swedish people according to race. The data collected was intended to make a foundation for a rational population policy aiming at improving the Nordic (Swedish) race. This race was deemed superior in comparison with the other races living in Sweden– primarily the East Baltic (Finnish) and the Lappish (Sami) race. But due to miscegenation and a depraved urban lifestyle this Nordic race was under threat and needed to be rescued. In the scientific practice of this eugenic institute it was the external aspects of the humans, or the phenotype that decided what race a person belonged to. A vast amount of bodily data was therefore collected―bodies were measured and hair and eye colours determined to decide what race a person belonged to. Beside these records photographical portraits of the persons examined were also taken. The use of photography in the scientific practice of the institute is not surprising―with the focus on how people looked it was a convenient and efficient tool. The camera could not only rapidly produce a vast amount of photographical records but was also, in this period, deemed objective and reliable―just capturing the world as it was. But in the same time it is obvious when examine the photographs that they were most biased. The portraits exemplifying the Nordic race show young, healthy good-looking persons in prosperous environments while for instance the Finnish type often was elderly, shabby men in worn out clothes, in front of poor homes and surroundings. The photographs were used to promote the idea of the Nordic race as superior―they were far from objective but permeated by ideological beliefs.

  • Gamifying piracy : functions and users of the Z-library
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Documentation. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0022-0418 .- 1758-7379. ; 78:7, s. 351-370
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: This paper aims to show how an illegal repository of literature, the Z-library, relates to and influences its users and how this relation is unique due to the illegal nature of the platform. The paper utilizes the idea of gamification to exemplify how to motivate users to contribute to a large shadow library in order to create the “world's largest e-book library,” sans “librarians.”Design/methodology/approach: The study makes use of an ethnographic approach. It interrogates the functions of the website through intensive use—a close reading of sorts. The data provide a foundation for illustrating how illegal text repositories function at a surface level and how their design appeals to their user-base.Findings: The paper provides a thorough and non-biased overview of how a “black open access” or “shadow library” site provides its users with pirated literature. It suggests that the lynchpin sustaining their functionality is a gamification of piracy designed to motivate a fragmented collective of individuals who work primarily for personal reward, rather than altruistic goals.Research limitations/implications: Due to the design of the study, the findings are not universal or applicable to all illegal repositories of text. Readers and researchers are encouraged to apply the concept introduced here to other cases.Social implications: This paper includes implication on the perception of literature piracy, how pirated literature is distributed and who performs the labor required to sustain illicit text repositories.Originality/value: This paper provides a novel conceptual basis to study literature piracy.

  • Det rör på sig! : dansfestival på biblioteken i Sjuhärad våren 2013 Åtta kommuner – ett projekt
  • 2013

  • Disciplining Social Media : an analysis of social media policies in 26 Swedish municipalities
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: First Monday. - : First Monday Editorial Group. - 1396-0466. ; 16:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social media can be seen as a resource for increased interaction between municipal authorities and citizens. However, as authorities attempt usage of social media, practices can become entrenched in traditional regulatory frameworks that emphasize openness and transparency rather than interaction with citizens. Social media usage by authorities tends to touch upon a broad range of regulatory elements, some of which are legal in character and others that we see as embedded in the technologies themselves as well as practices developed in connection with the technologies. In this paper, 26 Swedish social media policies produced by municipalities are analyzed in order to better understand how the conflict between transparency and interaction is dealt with in practical guidelines. We are concerned with how the diversity of social media is understood and how public functions are identified. By analyzing challenges and policy strategies outlined in these documents, it becomes possible to identify four alternative foundational positions based on social media being perceived as a problem/possibility or homogeneous/heterogeneous. The general tendency in all material is that routines of command and control are established in order to create clear goals and practices for individual social media activities and thereafter to discipline social media activities to remain firmly within the intentions of the blueprint. This explicitly disallows activities to adapt to needs developing through interaction with citizens. Nevertheless, we have also found a number of participatory strategies that are either aimed at increased quality of community services or at extending the marketability of the municipal brand.

  • Open access barriers: An action research
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Social Dimensions of Information and Communication Technology Policy. - 1571-5736. - 9780387848211 ; 282, s. 335-348
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ICT has provided the infrastructure to enable easy access to scientific information. Despite this, libraries are suffering from the rising of journal subscriptions. Additionally, the structure of scholarly publications is creating a wasteful situation where publicly funded research is being paid for several times over. University libraries are struggling to deal with these new realities at the same time as they provide a level of service with acceptable access to publications. The work of librarians is being heavily affected by the influence of copyright and licensing which together are creating barriers to open access. The work in this chapter draws from an action research in progress undertaken by Lund's University in order to explore the barriers to open access to scientific research output in Sweden.
