- In this paper, we discuss opportunities and challenges for technology development and adoption in public libraries. The results are based on a multi-site comparative study and thematic analysis of ethnographic work in three libraries, each in a different European country. The results explore the socio-technical practices, understandings, and perspectives of library staff and patrons when it comes to the role(s) and function(s) of libraries today. The contributions, which aim at informing the design and implementation of new digital services in public libraries, are two-fold. Firstly, the main findings from the study is presented under six themes. Secondly, a list of key opportunities and challenges focusing on 1) media and technology literacy, 2) institutional transformation and technical infrastructures, 3) resource constraints among library staff, and 4) a shift in focus towards supporting activities.

- This is the first attempt to delineate the synthetic field of the theoretical study of information, treating information as the basic phenomenon on the fundamental level of the world, encompassing nature, technology, individuals and society. The exploration of information is done within Info-computational approaches, to natural and social phenomena such as Bioinformatics, Information Physics, Informational Chemistry, Computational Physics, Cognitive and Social sciences, with special emphasis on interdisciplinary, crossdisciplinary and transdisciplinary knowledge. The book presents results of collaboration across research fields within info-computational and info-structural frameworks, in attempt to better theoretically and conceptually capture the phenomenon of information and its dynamics (such as computation and communication), as they appear on different levels of organization, on different scales and in different contexts.

- We investigate how to design community technologies for public events. We do so with a focus on technologies that give rise to new forms of participation and knowledge co-production in public libraries. Specifically, we deployed a digital service at a major public library during its four-week creative workshop series. The system offered an alternative way for people to work together as a community, to go beyond achieving individual goals, and to contribute to the achievement of public goals (e.g., building community bookshelves). We report on how the system has reconfigured physical spaces and afforded new social practices in the library. We propose Computational Alternatives as a fruitful approach for gaining situated, nuanced insights into a technology's possible adoption. We offer key insights in the form of computational alternatives vignettes - grounded stories that encapsulate sociotechnical implications of technology, pointing to plausible alternative futures.

Social media visibility of open access versus non-open access articles: A case study of Life Sciences & Biomedicine

- This study aims to determine whether and to what extent OA status of articles predicts their social media visibility when controlling for a considerable number of important factors. These factors which previous research confirmed their positive associations with altmetric counts are journal impact, individual collaboration, research funding, number of MESH topics, international collaboration, lay summary, and F1000 Score. The data for this study comprises 83,479 articles and reviews in the research area of Life Sciences & Biomedicine from 2012-2016, retrieved from the Medlin in November 2018. The results showed that (except for policy documents) the percentage of OA articles mentioned on altmetrics platforms was significantly higher than that of the NOA articles. Furthermore, OA factor is significantly associated with the increasing number of tweets, news posts, Facebook posts and blog posts and decreasing zero counts on each platform. Finally, OA status of articles is likely to increase the number of tweets, Facebooks posts, news posts, and blog posts by 97.6%, 25.2%, 78.2% and 51.4%, respectively.

- Open letters are seen as a politicized form of climate communication, and the professional roles of researchers who engage in these communicative events are thereby cast into question. Based on semi-structured interviews with initiators to open letters, this article argues that while communication can be seen as constitutive and influencing new and emergent professional identities, there are also overlaps and continuations of already established professional identities linked to what appears to be politicized communication. In the case of open letters on climate change, communication can be seen as a reaction against academic professional boundaries, but also a cementation and reaffirmation of one’s professional role that follows institutional boundaries and policies. The implications of this study are that we should not ascribe transformative power to a specific medium of communication, but rather examine the practices and understandings of communicators who engage in such activities.
