  • The Media for Democracy Monitor. A Cross National Study of Leading News Media
  • 2011
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • To what extent do the structures and conduct of leading news media correspond with their specific democratic role? Authors from 10 countries provide empirical evidence based on the 26 indicators included in the Media for Democracy Monitor. This book addresses, on the one hand, the academic community with the intention to further the debate on the role of leading mass media within contemporary democracies. New developments such as social media and the ongoing media crisis in many countries are likely to require further observation by academic research. On the other hand, the book provides input for the debate going on within media professional circles and their own perception of the role the news media play in democratic societies. The findings expose the leading news media to criticism from different perspectives, but they may also encourage media professionals to study best business practices in other countries – and perhaps to learn from experience abroad. Studying practices in other countries may cause longstanding newsroom habits to be questioned and revised. Contents: Editorial (Josef Trappel, Hannu Nieminen & Lars Nord), Why Democracy Needs Media Monitoring (Josef Trappel), Indicators and Definitions (André Donk & Josef Trappel), Australia: Committed to Investigative Journalism (Beate Josephi), Austria: Informal Rules and Strong Traditions (Manuela Grünangerl & Josef Trappel), Finland: High Professional Ethos in a Small, Concentrated Media Market (Kari Karppinen, Hannu Nieminen & Anna-Laura Markkanen), Germany: The News Media are Still Able to Play a Supportive Role for Democracy (Frank Marcinkowski & André Donk), Lithuania: Mixed Professional Values in a Small and Highly Blurred Media Environment (Auksė Balčytienė), The Netherlands: Although There is No Need for Dramatization, Vigilance is Required (Leen d’Haenens & Quint Kik), Portugal: A Young Democracy Still in Progress (Joaquim Fidalgo), Sweden: A Mixed Media Model under Market Pressures (Torbjörn von Krogh & Lars Nord), Switzerland: Swiss Quality Media. A Reduced Protection Forest for Democracy (Werner A. Meier, Alexandra Gmür & Martina Leonarz), UK: UK News Media and Democracy. Professional Autonomy and its Limits (Peter Humphreys), and Democratic Functions under Pressure: Conclusions (Lars Nord, Hannu Nieminen & Josef Trappel).

  • The Mediated Politics of Europe: A Comparative Study of Discourse
  • 2017
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This edited collection makes a unique contribution to analyses of the changing nature and challenges of mediated political communication, through a distinctive comparative discourse analytical approach. The book explores how politics is performed and discursively constructed in television news and current affairs in five countries (France, Greece, Italy, Sweden and the UK) and focuses on a moment in time in European politics characterized by challenging tensions; increased Euroscepticism, questioning of mainstream politics; accentuated gaps between the elite and the citizens, and polarizations between member states. Emphasising the performative and discursive dimensions of political communication, the chapters provide a detailed comparative analysis that is centred around three themes: how symbolic representations of politics are shaped by journalistic practices, genres and styles of news reporting; the language and performances of mainstream and populist political leaders; and the participation and representation of citizens’ voices.

  • The Nordic wave in place branding: poetics, practices, politics
  • 2019
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The widespread international interest in the Nordic region and the mobility of Nordic brand imaginaries call for more research into the global relevance of Nordic place-branding practices. This book offers a timely attempt to unpack the specificity of the Nordic in regard to place branding by gathering different transdisciplinary accounts written by researchers in marketing, tourism, geography, communication, sociology and political science.

  • The Palgrave Handbook of Intermediality
  • 2024
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This handbook provides an extensive overview of traditional and emerging research areas within the field of intermediality studies, understood broadly as the study of interrelations among all forms of communicative media types, including transmedial phenomena. Section I offers accounts of the development of the field of intermediality - its histories, theories and methods. Section II and III  then explore intermedial facets of communication from ancient times until the 21st century, with discussion on a wide range of cultural and geographical settings, media types, and topics, by contributors from a diverse set of disciplines.  It concludes in Section IV with an emphasis on urgent societal issues that an intermedial perspective might help understand.

  • The Paradox of Openness : Transparency and Participation in Nordic Cultures of Consensus
  • 2014
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The ‘open society’ has become a watchword of liberal democracy and the market system in the modern globalized world. Openness stands for individual opportunity and collective reason, as well as bottom-up empowerment and top-down transparency. It has become a cherished value, despite its vagueness and the connotation of vulnerability that surrounds it. Scandinavia has long considered itself a model of openness, citing traditions of freedom of information and inclusive policy making. This collection of essays traces the conceptual origins, development, and diverse challenges of openness in the Nordic countries and Austria. It examines some of the many paradoxes that openness encounters and the tensions it arouses when it addresses such divergent ends as democratic deliberation and market transactions, freedom of speech and sensitive information, compliant decision making and political and administrative transparency, and consensual procedures and the toleration of dissent.

  • The Public in Public Service Media. RIPE@2009
  • 2010
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The importance of reconceptualising what public service broadcasting [PSB] should be and do in the 21st century is a profile issue in media policy and strategic development planning. There is growing recognition that public participation is a necessary if problematic aspect of the transition to public service media [PSM]. This recognition correlates with a deepening understanding that the viability of the enterprise depends on the people paying for it and using its services. This fourth RIPE Reader demonstrates how the historic insularity of PSB companies is changing in efforts to restructure and revitalise the enterprise. The substance features further development of research presented in the RIPE@2008 conference in Germany, titled Public Service Media in the 21st Century: Participation, Partnership and Media Development. The authors included in this volume query what is required to achieve participation-readiness in many interdependent facets: strategy revision, organisational restructuring, retooling production processes, and redefining professional identities. Approached in two sections, the first focuses on theories and trends and the second on practices and performance. The contents document the significance of engaging the public in, with and through media services, arguing the crucial importance of the Public in Public Service Media.

  • The role of universities in inclusive innovation. Cluster development in East Africa.
  • 2014
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Universities play a vital role in development and innovation in small and local businesses in East Africa. This has been made possible through Triple Helix processes linking academia, business and government in Innovative Cluster Initiatives. The cluster initiatives are coordinated through country chapters of Pan African Competitiveness Forum (PACF). Scandinavian Institute for Collaboration and Development (SICD) has been linked to PACF since start. In this anthology, active partners in cluster initiatives in Tanzania and Uganda present their experiences of university involvement. The contributors represent business persons in clusters, cluster facilitators, researchers in Uganda, Tanzania and Sweden and key persons of the PACF network.
