  • Residential energy consumption from a time-geographic perspective
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Handbook on the Geographies of Energy. - : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 9781785365614 - 9781785365621 ; , s. 195-210
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Residential energy consumption is a consequence of household members’ activities in their homes. Analysing and understanding energy consumption in households therefore needs to start from household activities and everyday life. From household members’ time diaries, we can analyse and learn about when, where and what energy-related activities occur in the household, involving what household members are engaged and in what wider social context activities are performed. Based on the work of Torsten Hägerstrand, the chapter use a time-geographic visualization to analyse the activities and the software VISUAL-TimePAcTS/energy to track the relationship between activities, appliance use and electricity consumption in Sweden. By aggregating activity sequences from the time diaries written by many individuals we can reveal differences in activity patterns in larger groups, for example, men and women, people in and outside the labor force, single households and families, adults and children.

  • Digitalisering, innovation och hållbar urbanisering
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Digitalisering för ett hållbart klimat. ; , s. 79-104

  • Is there such a thing as a capitalist eschatology?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Futures. - : Elsevier BV. - 0016-3287. ; 136
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This short communication presents preliminary notes about how to study the role of eschatology in the contemporary economy, focusing specifically on space-colonizing ambitions of US entrepreneurs such as Elon Musk. It is suggested that the proposed research agenda focuses on three problematics, relating to immediacy, investment, and ideology. As such, the text proposes to study the making of alternative futures by situating imaginaries of humanity becoming a multiplanetary species in the present realities of political economy.

  • Life in Laboratory Urbanism: Repression, Suspension and the Politics of Innovation
  • 2020
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper examines the “labification of everything”, focusing on how this is enacted in urban spaces. Using previous ethnographic work on “laboratory urbanism” (Eriksson & Palmås, 2016) as a point of departure, the argument will first outline three key underlying tendencies that underpin the cultivation of experimental zones in the built environment: The “reinvention of invention” (Thrift, 2006), the rise of “neuroliberal” modes of governance (Whitehead et.al., 2017), and the more long-term shift from managerialism to entrepreneurialism in urban governance (Harvey, 1989). In the second part of the paper, the argument moves on to put this labification in the context of previous accounts of creativity and playfulness in urban spaces. Specifically, the paper will argue that these experimental zones upset commonly held assumptions about tactics, strategy and power, originally introduced by de Certeau (1984): In laboratory urbanist sites, playful tactics are no longer effective routes for circumventing strategic power. The third part of the paper introduces an alternative approach to define the political stakes of life in urban experimental settings. Drawing inspiration from artist Liam Gillick’s treatment of the politics of creativity in contemporary art institutions, the argument suggests that political creativity in experimental zones involves avoiding situations based on “repression” and/or “suspension”. Here, repression implies situations that foster the experimental, but does not imply an actual high-stakes experiment. Conversely, suspension implies a state of permanent excitement among participants, which never resolves into an actual change or innovation. Thus, the paper contributes to STS's treatment of space and (urban) politics.

  • Livelihoods or ecopreneurship? Agro-economic experiments in Hambantota, Sri Lanka
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Enterprising Communities: People and Places in the Global Economy. - : Emerald. - 1750-6204. ; 7:2, s. 125-135
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - In the context of contemporary debates on ecopreneurship and sustainable livelihoods, this article compares two programmes to promote a certain type of agro-economic practice among rural farmers. By following the successes and failures of these programmes, the text interrogates how such initiatives are evaluated by the surrounding community of aid agencies and governmental bodies. Design/methodology/approach - Deploying the theoretical notion of "performativity", as used within economic anthropology, the article posits that the above-mentioned programmes can be construed as economic experiments. More specifically, the text compares two concurrent initiatives: One ecopreneurial experiment instigated by a social entrepreneur, and one livelihoods-focussed experiment instigated by an aid agency. The case study is based upon material from a three-year ethnography of entrepreneurship-promoting programmes in Hambantota, Sri Lanka. Findings - While the ecopreneurial venture fails, the livelihoods-based initiative proves successful in demonstrating its economic validity. The case study indicates that, in the context of modes of evaluation focusing on day-to-day incomes of farmers, it may be difficult for ecopreneurs to make room for ecological experimentation. Originality/value - Having identified this "ecopreneur’s dilemma", the article prompts scholars and policy-makers to investigate it further, and potentially re-examine how the livelihoods agenda is implemented in practice.

  • Too Late for History to End
  • 2020
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Too Late for History to End forms a part of sociologist Karl Palmås and photographer Kalle Sanner’s collaborative interrogation of how architecture and the built environment relate to socio-political imaginaries. Based on historical research and on-site documentation from Berlin's Tempelhof airport and London's Crystal Palace, this essay film locates contemporary politics in space and time, investigating themes of political temporalities, globalization, and the ruin.

  • A Case Study on Grassroots Environmentalism for Health and Sustainability in the Land of Fires (Italy)
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Risks and Challenges of Hazardous Waste Management: Reviews and Case Studies. - : Bentham eBooks.
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter provides a reassessment of the waste ‘crises’ in the so-called Land of Fires in Italy and highlights the contribution of local social mobilizations in advancing environmental justice and sustainability concerns. It is based on the longterm collaboration between a social scientist and two activists, and it draws from a dialogue of academic and activist knowledge in the tradition of Environmental Justice organizations and scholarship. Our contention is that local communities and ecologies of this area have borne the brunt of the socio-environmental costs of waste disposal and industrial production. This translated into risks of contamination for the residents, suffering threats to health and stigmatization. To this state of affairs, local grassroots environmental movements answered by confederating into a regional coalition that arranged on November 16, 2013, one of the biggest environmental justice demonstrations in Italian history, spurring the intervention of the State via legislation and resources. The coalition was also instrumental in the elaboration of the Pact for the Land of Fires, a programmatic commitment to end illegal waste disposal that defined the obligations for the institutional and civil society signatories. Finally, we show how the experience of activists is systematized and coordinated today through the initiative of the Civic Observers, an association of citizens that monitors environmental crimes and conditions in cooperation with public officials.

  • How restorative landscapes can benefit psychological and physiological responses: a pilot study of human–naturerelationships in Sweden and Taiwan
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Landscape Research. - 0142-6397 .- 1469-9710. ; 48, s. 1073-1090
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Restorative landscapes provide people with the opportunity to experience nature. This pilot study aimed to determine whether cultural differences affect psychological and physiological responses to restorative landscapes. Two populations, one in Taiwan and one in Sweden, were experimentally compared by showing them photos of restorative landscapes from each country. The results showed that restorativeness was affected more by photos of the restorative landscape in Sweden than in Taiwan. The results showed that restorativeness in terms of psychological and physiological responses was affected. A significant variation in heart rate was observed between the populations: Taiwanese participants experienced higher heart rates when viewing unfamiliar and novel scenery when compared to Swedish participants. No significant differences between the populations were observed regarding attention capacity, working memory, and muscle tension. The psychological and physiological responses to the two countries’ distinctive restorative landscapes may have implications for designing such landscapes in urban green spaces.
